Caddy is going to be a top class player. I have a lot more confidence in him than most.

He is a power athlete with a real thirst for hard work. He is very strong mark and classy around the goal.

His form has not been great but by no means disastrous. Bigger bodied midfielders just take longer because their game in juniors was built on power and they just don't have that advantage at the highest level. He needs to re-learn his game and adapt to Geelong style.

I have a sneaky feeling he'll have a big impact in second half of the year, I think he might even get into the finals team.

Yeah, but if you compare his output this year to others it has been lower than what some would have expected (certainly pre-season). Take Horlin-Smith. This year, they've played the same number of games, both have been subs twice, plus the fact both were taken in the 2010 draft it's an excellent comparison.

And it all goes one way. Horlin-Smith has more disposals, more marks, more tackles, more inside 50s, more contested possessions, and more clearances. And he's only played 9 games, not 30 like Caddy has.

This doesn't mean Caddy won't make it, I think he will. But anyone who thinks he's in our best 22 is not being realistic just yet. Horlin-Smith won't be automatically put back in, and he's done far more.

Yes, below expectations and Horlin-Smith is ahead of him. It is impossible to find a spot for him at the moment as he is not a first choice midfielder yet and we are flushed with flankers. I am just basing it on a gut feel he will really improve second half of the year.

I think Caddy just needs a big game to feel he belongs and take the pressure off himself.

Yep. Needs that breakout game. No doubt both he and Horlin-Smith will get more games in the second half of the year. Whether they're there come finals is another matter.

Hence why he probably should have lined up against GC/ GWS if fit. Brisbane could be a good opportunity for him to try and stake a claim

Nah, I'd rather see him in the Freo and Hawthorn games.

Really? We could have Varcoe and Taylor Hunt back by then. They're must win games, and he's not in our best 22 yet.

Who goes out for him?

Surely Hyphen gets in above Caddy anyway. Could attempt to shut down Mitchell like he did Kennedy

Caddy should play v Brisbane and bloody hope he stays in the centre square alongside Selwood and Kelly, terrific clearance gatherer, holds up in tackles to dish off the footy while Hyphen has the same attributes minus the speed of Caddy who's a little quicker than he gets credit for imo.

Doubt that either will go straight in without some game time in the VFL.

The most like for like player would be stringer but he would be stiff to miss after only one game.
On form i'd say Smedts but Motlop would be his most likely replacement, so my answer is IHNFI !!

My feeling since we signed him is that general expectations of him are way too high and based more on his initial draft pick number and the Ablett compo we gave up for him. For me, he simply doesn't get enough of the footy yet to be in our best 22 as an inside mid. I do believe he will be an important cog in our MF wheel over the next 3+4 years, though. Long way behind Selwood, Bundy, T. Hunt, SJ, Bartel and Duncan and lagging guys like GHS and even Stringer/Cowan when fit as far as I can see, but I like what I see in general.
He'd have to explode out of the blocks over the next month to be rated a chance for Finals, though. I hope he does, of course....

Looks like he's been slowly improving your you guy, started slow, but getting there. Helps a lot having plenty of experienced players around him. Would have loved for him to make it to Essendon. Your gain though, in the end it will be I think,

Absolutely spot on. Exactly as I see it. But the competition for spots is going to be insane after the break. Very tough decisions to be made.

I reckon GHS is more skilful with the ball tho. Also looks like he has greater footballing instincts than Caddy, imo

Should each progress into very established players one day tho. However sometimes I get a little unnerved by the lack of game time each receive at this crucial stage in their youth development. Cost of having such a good team I suppose.

I agree with that and this is why the club must do their best to sign GHS for a while to come because he has drawn interest from Sanderson such is his style.
Very different footballer compared to most others, we need to look past the inconsistency and focus more on what they do without the footy in hand and GHS is a smooth operator.
Good size, pre season looks to have done wonders as he can now hold himself up in a tackle so another summer in the gym, he'll soon become a 25+ disposal gun midfielder.

Surprised at this comment FS. Caddy averages 0.7 clearances per game, while Horlin-Smith averages 2.3. If anything it's Horlin-Smith who should be described that way.

Caddy might be quicker, but Horlin-Smith gets the ball more, takes more marks, wins more clearances, lays more tackles, gets more inside 50s, wins more contested possessions, and uses the ball far better.

To me, at the moment, it's not even a choice.

your using stats to base your opinion though Partridge, I can distinctly remember when he was at the Suns and he played in the centre square and he gathered 3-4 clearances every game for a good month or more.

You also have to understand that Caddy has played forward in most games for us thus far and yet to be given a full match as GHS did v Sydney earlier in the year.

There is no doubt in my mind that Horlin-Smith and Caddy are going to become a fantastic duo in the same way Bartel/Ablett were but it's all about team balance right now but the future is exciting.

I like both players and Im not wrapped at one being played off against the other. Different players , different roles for mine.

If we manage to get Adams then he is the one to compare versus George , both inside hard mids. Caddy has got more pace across the ground , yes he can win ball inside but he will move it outside as well. George lacks pace across the ground but gets more of it atm. Really like both of them. When the side evolves even more, with more pacey players across the ground George will be even better feed in the ball out to them. Even Varcoe comes back George would be good to have in the side.

Is Caddy as good as some wanted , not sure perhaps some thought there were getting more than he currently is. I very happy with what he has shown. he is learning that GFC will not give away games and is slowing becoming acustom to our style and the club. He will be hard to displace next year I feel. The truth is we are stocking up for the loss of players that is imminent. Its why Im interested in Adams even though we are struggling to get all our kids in. Within two season we will probably lose 4-5 regulars so prep is the name of the game

Absolutely no idea who goes out for him.

But if we're going to fast track player development there is no use just playing them against the crap sides.
We're not the Aussie cricket team. We dont hide players from the best opposition.

Some of Caddys best work was done against the pies for instance.

It's a fantastic problem to have, personally I am happy for the Caddys, Stringers etc to be killing it in the 2s until they simply can't be ignored and their form is better than someone in the seniors to replace them...

I think this will start to happen as we settle a side in the back half of the year

Caddy will do well at the cats, has a few ahead of him but once they retire he will slot straight into ur midfield

I think fitness also has something to do with it, Cats play a high fitness based gameplan which obviously he can't fulfill yet.
Once he gets that tank (close to next year, likely the year after) we will see him play a lot more in the midfield, he has the tools no doubt.

He was one of the fittest in preseason by all reports.
