A surprising recent one is Josh Gibson.

Plenty will earn praise from the game last night, and plenty of players have earned praise for our season so far. But maybe we take Josh a little bit for granted. He’d be the AA half back if the Saints didn’t love overpossessing it in defence and spend 80% of their game in their D50 (see NWM, Sinclair, Wilkie stats). Now I was calling for Josh at HB last year and to persist with it in the off season, and glad to see it paying dividends this season. It makes sense to his strengths ball in hand after we ‘lost’ Nick’s impact there post 2023.

But one thing Josh doesn’t get enough recognition for is that he is a bloody good, tough, hard defender. He knows when to go, always seems to make the right decision on waiting for spill ball vs impacting aerially and he is awesome at ground level. Not sure if he always had that in him and I didn’t realise it, or if he’s grown it or both, but he has such strong defensive instincts.

There’s a game a few years ago (?) where he happened to be last in defence and ran back to spoil the ball turning his body at the last moment to face the ball for what was an almost guaranteed mark when 99% of players would have either given up or given a free for front on contacts. Wish I remembered when that was exactly but that told me at the time his timing is impeccable and he could make a good defender

100% agree, can even look at using Nick on the HBF to break a tag if we get Josh into more center bounces. Gives us a lot of options including using Houston more offensively as you mention.

For me he’s been our best player all year. Consistently good. Nick always gets all the plaudits , but it’s about time the whole football world actually take notice and realise how good Josh is. Nick may win the Brownlow, but as it sits now Josh would be winning the Copeland. Incredible year he’s having. To have that sort of impact in a quarter. Imagine if it was Nick. The whole country would be going nuts. Great stuff Josh.

Nick and Josh on ballers with Houston roaming the backline in his natural role. Can't tag all of them.

He's been excellent at half back all year and won AA selection out on a wing.

No reason why he can't become a triple threat as a pure midfielder and we look to emulate the move of Richards at the Dogs.

Potentially this move could extract maximum value out of Houston at half back also.

Of course what we have been doing has lead to us sitting on top of the ladder, so whether we're prepared to experiment more with this move in the coming weeks is known only to Fly.

Btw is it fair to say he’s been very much a slow burn? He was a good footballer before his bro came on the scene but has really taken off since Nick’s drafting.

Absolutely should see more of Josh on the ball like that. We can cover half back easily. Even if it is Markov.

He's asthmatic. He always had good skills and evasive tricks, but was small and had shit endurance when he entered the system. He got on top of his asthma and has built endurance and has gone from looking slowish to being quick because of the endurance and has become stronger as well - and then add in the confidence growth from it all and we've got a star.

He's asthmatic. He always had good skills and evasive tricks, but was small and had shit endurance when he entered the system. He got on top of his asthma and has built endurance and has gone from looking slowish to being quick because of the endurance and has become stronger as well - and then add in the confidence growth from it all and we've got a star.

Yeah, he was a bit undersized when we drafted him, had to put on some size & build up his endurance. Where Nick was pretty much a ready for seniors player straight away. Josh is now well and truly a star in his own right. We are truly blessed. Peter, the gift that has kept on giving.
