Re: Josh Green

Having said that, I still see his future as a 'let's get the hell out of this congestion' stoppage breakaway in the guts.

Agree 100 percent.

Goes in low, fast and hard and emerges with the pill.

NEAFL Round 6 vs Morningside

Josh Dyson was named the Lions’ best from Josh Green, who according to Clarke “looked a cut above when he was involved”.

Recruiting errors costly for Lions

Brisbane muffed their recruitment and responsibility has to be taken by someone. Swans star Luke Parker could have been a Lion. The recruiters wanted him but got overruled by the football department who opted for Josh Green, who has been unable to command a permanent spot in one of the weakest sides in the comp. Parker is shining in one of the best.

Andrew Hamilton appreciation thread

Nathan Clarke

“Josh Green continued to be nippy around the contest, but he’s probably still another pre-season away from being a real power-runner at AFL level and running out four strong quarters in the seniors,” he said.

“Josh is a very good player when he’s around the footy, and on the weekend he was able to get possessions where he got over the back of Sydney’s zone and set up a lot of shots on goal.”

Harsh but fair call by Hamilton. Would love Parker. But he doesn't really tend to mention any of our successes in that article and it's not like Green isn't pushing for a spot.

I don't agree with hamilton's viewpoint on our drafting, the only exception being 2009, when we traded draft picks for dud trades. It's always a tough job to predict the potential/capabilities of a raw 17yo kid

as for parker over green, i didn't hear or read in any of the previews/phantom drafts to that years draft parkers name associated with brisbane, but i did read/hear josh greens name. the lions had him pencilled in to take him at some point in the draft. this was one pick most of the phantom drafts got right.

Pretty weak comment by Hamilton (not a huge surprise there). Green was always going to take a while to develop given his stature.

I still have big hopes for Josh has a skillset we need and importantly can play another role when not in the engineroom (which I agree is his best position).

He should have a chance to show us how far he has come this weekend, given that Banners has just been ruled out for 4-6 weeks.

I think he'll go ok if he gets his chance. Let's hope the bar is not set too much higher than it's been for Banfield and that he is given a decent chance.

Round 9 preview

Todd Banfield's foot injury opened the door for Dayne Zorko and Josh Green last Sunday and both grabbed their opportunities with open arms. Switching between small forward and midfield roles, both men had 18 disposals and combined for eight tackles. They were terriers in the forward half and Voss will be hoping for more of the same against North.

Round 10 vs West Coast

Green came on as the substitute at three-quarter time for Aaron Cornelius and kicked three goals to give the Lions hope when there appeared none.

But the limelight should also shine on substitute Josh Green, who nabbed two* crucial last quarter goals, and whose speed and fresh legs were probably the key to a Lions' victory for the ages.

The introduction of Green proved critical with the 19-year-old kicking three goals in the final quarter while playing a hand in another.

It wasn’t just Simon Black that the Lions missed – the energy and spark up forward provided by Todd Banfield, out with stress fractures, was sorely needed. So Josh Green’s last-quarter cameo, sharking three goals, was particularly vital in the Lions’ win. Expect him to play a bigger role in the weeks ahead.

That last quarter display reminded me of Aker!! 3 goals and set up the Zorko set shot. He was most likely the reason we won. Got to the right positions at the fall of the ball and converted his opportunities. Great work!!

I know he only played a QTR, but wow what a QTR, has anyone ever been nominated for rising star for just 1 QTR??:):)

greeny showed us how the subsitute should be used, the ultimate impact player at the crucialist of times.

Easy being Green

"To come on and play a role, I'm happy with that," Green said in a jubilant Lions' dressing room post-match.

"Come on when everyone's a bit tired and make an impact, whether it's goals or tackles, because you're a bit fresher than everyone, and just help the forward line out - that's the message the subs get.

"It's good to come in and play your role and if they keep playing me as the sub I'm happy to do that. I'm just happy to be in the team."

"We've got that good bit of chemistry me and him (Zorko), both smaller players, so hopefully Toddy can come in and we can all play the small forward role."

Good to see Riewoldt pumping up Green. Three goals and a goal assist in the last quarter was huge. I was surprised to see him as a sub, thought he'd done enough in the previous games to cement his spot in the starting line up.

Contact between West Coast's Darren Glass and the Brisbane Lions' Josh Green from the fourth quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. The ball is loose in the Brisbane forward line with Green and Glass coming towards the contest from opposite directions. As Green takes possession of the ball, Glass braces for contact. It was the view of the panel that player Glass had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

"I've only played as the sub once before that and I wasn't sure how to attack it," Green told the Mercury yesterday.
"But I spoke to one of the coaches and he said just go on and run around, apply pressure, and I tried to do that.
"The ball just fell into my hands a couple of times so I was pretty lucky."
"It was a little bit frustrating [not starting the year in the seniors] but I knew what I needed to work on and I went back to the twos and worked hard on my deficiencies.
"'Vossy [coach Michael Voss] was happy with that and gave me a chance because Todd got injured and he backed me in, which was good.
"I would like to eventually be in the middle but at the moment with my fitness, it's probably not up to midfield AFL level yet."
"Maybe another pre-season and I can push for that midfield role but at the moment myself and the club are quite happy playing as a small forward."

Josh Green came on and had an immediate impact. Is that really a requirement of the super-subs now?

Well certainly the requirement of the sub is to be able to give you some intensity... give you some running intensity, because as the game starts to peter out (and) guys start to get tired, the player who comes on as a sub can turn up in some space and create that extra little bit of run and fire, that's what you're after. It doesn't always work that way. We've had some good impact in previous years with it. Rohan Bewick's been pretty good at it, but Josh Green to be able to come on and have four possessions, kick three goals, set up Zorko (for a another), that's a pretty impressive display for a sub.
