Jackson Bird has to be shaking his head. Needs to move back to the mainland to get a call up due to the ridiculous notion he is only taking wickets due to Tassie green tops.

Bird, Bird, Bird, Bird, Bird is the word.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. I would pick Butterworth ahead of Bird.

It would be a toss up for mine, perhaps Bird's 6-for this shield game getting him over the line but I would have them either over Hazelwood. Butterworth doesn't even seem close to the getting on the selection table so I think his dream of playing for Australia is done and dusted.

I agree, but I don't know why that is. Has sustained excellent form over an extended period of time.

He and Steve O'Keefe seem to have been labelled 'never pick for Tests' for some reason.

SOK did a really good job of showing why he got that label last season. He was awful. I do think he has that label though. It's probably because while some players like Haze has an action and an ability to make the ball bounce in such a fashion that says look at me straight away, SOK is pretty boring. The actions and loop and all that of Lyon, Beer and, given how much they've rated him over the past 5-6 years, Holland seem to be much more striking for the selectors ("rightly or wrongly"). (He's also similar to Bird in that it took him ages to crack a state team. Perhaps reflecting a long term belief that he wasn't gonna play for aus)

Actually just on Butterworth and Bird and all that. I'm reminded of the fact that last season up til Boxing Day, those two were putting up better results than Hilf. But they took a look at Hilf, saw his action, said he's back, and picked him. And of course history looks pretty favourably towards that decision to dig deeper than the stats

I just can't wait for the selectors to keep Siddle and Hilfenhaus in and then lose the toss and South Africa bat for 2 days, Siddle gets injured in the first day and the Saffas win the test.

They do have 3 days to rest, Hilfenhaus should go anyway, bowled pies the whole match.

Hastings better be better than Clint McKay's pies! With this attack, jeez...I'd rather play Lyon!
typical dumbass nsw response. mckay is better than any of the other rubbish than NSW has on display atm (minus cummins)
who else do they play hazel wood who has taken 9 and 46 this year or Starc, the new Michell Johnson but cant bat, even better lest bring steve smith back

Where did my post say I want anyone from NSW...in fact if you asked me Cutting, Bird would top the list of players that should be considered. Do you not remember McKay's test match, he was terrible! Starc swings the ball, he will be good in Perth with the Fremantle Doctor.

McKay was taken down by an in-form Chris Gayle on a deck conducive to attacking batsmanship. Hardly a shootable offence.

Clint is a very underrated player.

They must have a no more than 3 Tasmanian players policy, bit of a joke some of the guys picked in front of him. I watched Tassie and WA today when the CA website wasn't shitting itself. And Johnson was his usual licorice all sorts, unplayable here and there and plenty of rubbish in between.

bird at least he has form & has taken wickets last season and this season, cutting is nothing more than a tomato thrower.
starc has made a careed of bowling random rubbish like Johnson but cant bat and doesn't have his pase.

if you remember the actual game and look at the stats, every bowler went for a bit on the end of Gayles bat, in makay's only test appearance. at least he has the first class, and Australian odi and t20 figures to back that up. which hazel wood and starc dont have, which all they have is potential, in which every state player has but not every one plays for nsw, & in words of the late David Hookes, "when you play for nsw you get handed the blues had and the baggy green in a brown paper bag"

The hastings selection can only be as a backup to watson surely. Even still - you'd think McDonald would get the call up first

Assuming watson is fit
In Watson/Starc
Out Quiney/Pattinson

Gives us 4 quicks and a spinner.

McDonald is injured, and considering Watson bats top 3 I don't see how he can really be 'replaced' by Hastings. He must be a Shue in to play I reckon.

Seen him on and off. He's been pretty solid. Nothing matching his performances in SA for the Champions League, and it's probably fair to say the pitches he had over there are more similar to what he would get in Perth if he was to play than the pitches he's played on so far in the shield. In the recent QLD game he bowled one ripping over when then and that would have cemented any thought they had of bringing him into the national set-up this summer. That's how this works. If they view you as an awesome talent (the bowlers I keep mentioning, + M.Marsh, J. Holland, S. Smith come to mind) it doesn't take much to get you into the set-up. That one over + plus solid enough displays around it are good enough. People might not like it, but if they focused only on shield results, Butterworth would have played over Pattinson at the gabba last season
Fair summation. I agree with most of that. It's especially more so now that we no longer have a reservoir of talent piling on runs and/or wickets at FC level like we did in the late 1990s - early 2000s. Players are now picked on potential for the most part.

Hazelwood was ahead of Starc and Cummings before he got injured 2 seasons ago. Didnt think he hd done much since but the guys on 'inside cricket' said he has impressed lately.
