I jsut want to know what Hazelwood and Johnson have done to get themselves called up before others who are actually performing? Bugger them being from any state in particular I don't think blokes should be picked who are not in proven form, not because of what happened in the past and if that happened neither of Hazelwood or Johnson would of got a call up.

at some point you have to think ahead. do you want world best staus with old bowlers? or lose the next teast with young bowlers and give them ecperience to with the TWO ashes series coming up?

id prefer the ashes win. i dont care about SA, but i think stark, hazelwood, johnson and siddle can take them.

id prefer we give the young blokes a go and win the ashes...!

From the squad that was chosen, and assuming all are fit to play, I would go:
Warner
Cowan
Watson
Clarke
Hussey
Ponting
Wade
Hastings
Siddle
Lyon
Starc

My preferred eleven, including those outside the squad, would be:
Warner
Hughes (I still have my doubts, but he's been scoring runs)
Cowan
Clarke
Hussey
Watson (only just getting in)
Hartley
Siddle
Lyon
Starc (not convinced, but give hm a run; he seems to be next in line anyway)
Bird

I expect the selectors to go with:
Warner
Cowan
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Wade
Johnson
Hazelwood
Siddle
Starc

Pattinson got picked for Aus with no five fors and a similar record to Hazelwood's. He's been on their radar for longer than Starc, it's no surprise he's been roped in as soon as he played four matches in a row without injury.
Absolutely. Warne, McGrath, Healy others who hadn't set Shield cricket on fire prior to being selected from memory

I'm convinced that I'm a test standard bowler only, which is why I have not been successful at local cricket so far. If only the selectors had the foresight to select me.

"Lyon is bowling well. So lets crush his momentum and spirit by dropping him. That'll teach him."

With a couple of part-time spinners, Lyon isn't a necessity so he isn't a guaranteed spot like Clarke or Hussey, especially on pitches that don't spin a lot.
Having said that, I agree, I wouldn't drop him.

Warner
Cowan
-both have centuries this series and seem to be forming a better understanding with each other

Watson
-comes in for Quiney who is averaging 3 this series. Doesn't bowl anymore than a part-timer would (approx 3 spells per innings would be enough). Can't have an injury prone player like Watson bat at 3 and bowl heaps

Ponting
-Depending on Khawaja and anyone elses form in SS, this will be his last test. Stays at 4, equals Steve Waughs record for test matches played, then we get Khawaja/Hughes/even Doolan in for Hobart against the Sri Lankans.
We all know though that he will probably perform at the WACA, then get a gig vs the Sri Lankans and tear them apart just like he tore the Pakistani's and the Indians apart...yay

Clarke
-obviously

Hussey
-obviously

Wade
-spot starting to come under pressure, not doing a whole lot with the bat which is fine when his keeping is up to standard but made a few costly mistakes last innings. Hartley has an opportunity here, Wade needs to fire.

Siddle
-our best bowler at the moment, also not terrible with the bat. Gives it his all. Maybe rest him for Hobart as he will be exhausted by then, but really think we should be trying everything to beat South Africa - we could beat Sri Lanka without him imo

Starc
-gets his chance, replacing Pattinson. Needs to take it though as Bird or even Butterworth could be considered for Hobart if the selectors want a Bellreive specialist down there. I doubt he will get dropped as I reckon he will put on a good showing in Perth.

Hilfenhaus
-our most under pressure bowler. The only talked about bowler that should not replace him is Johnson. Hazelwood and Bird would be adequate replacements - and Cummins and Pattinson would displace him if fit. Needs to fire but I think on the back of a continued improvement from test 1 to test 2, he will get an opportunity to return to his best in test 3.

Lyon
-keep the spinner in, bowling well and should be handy enough at the WACA anyway

Fast bowling stocks are very good in Australia atm, even players like Cutting, Putland and Bird could all easily be in the team. Spin stocks continue to be a worry though. Any good future spinners on our radar?

OP. you know little about cricket if you dont rate hazelwood....hes gunna make you eat your words. butthen, you may be an englishman...
I don't rate Hazelwood now. However, I'm not saying he doesn't have potential.

What I am saying is that he has done nothing so far to warrant a call up to the Test squad.

And I am not a Pom!

But but but but is at the WACA...
Had we had our full fast bowling stocks to choose from, of course we'd have gone in with 4 quicks and sat Lyon on the sidelines for one game.

However, I think we might as well play him given he's bowling well, and there aren't many worthwhile alternatives.

Would be silly to drop Lyon if Watson is coming in for this reason alone. The selectors telegraphed their intentions before Adelaide by saying if he isn't fit to bowl, then he wont play.

That being true, Australia are then virtually playing 5 quicks and no frontline spinners, which is crazy in anyone's language.

I was asked about 6 weeks ago if I wanted to go to a day or two of the Perth test.

My response: 'I'm keen to go, but won't pay good money if they pick Mitchell Johnson'.

This guy is the Quade Cooper of Australian cricket, complete with the shit tattoos.

17 wickets @ 29 with a strike rate of 52 hardly screams 'Pick me! Pick me!'. He's not a 20 year old tearaway, he's a 31 year old bowler with 47 tests to his name that was saved from being dropped because of injury.

I'd take the forever under the pump Hilfenhaus over Johnson any day of the week.

I think he used the bounce fairly well in the first innings in Adelaide, and see no reason why he could not do so in Perth. Even with a full compliment of quicks to choose from, I'd have Lyon in.
