you dont want martin, arguably the best mid in the land right now?
I dont think we do. There's enough worry about his character and infouence obn our playing group to cause some concern.
Ckub will know a lot more than the public perception and I had similar reservations about Shaw that turned out very wrong. Still not keen though.

unrelated but that trade the Dees did getting Salem and Tyson for Kelly looks absolutely terrible now. Imagine Oliver dishing it out to Kelly who puts it down Hogans throat for the next 10 years....
Yep. Understood the reasoning for the trade at the time, but I thought it was the wrong move.

 Imagine Oliver dishing it to Dusty who fends off a would be tackler, hands off to Kelly, sheparded by Wines, who puts it down Hogans throat

Perhaps the Dees were aware that he wasn't going to last at Melbourne either?

If that's the case, they made a good deal.
What do you mean by that? He is moving home to Melbourne if he leaves GWS (sydney)? I just thought when the trade came up that it was stupid of them. I get the need to add two decent players but I recall Kelly was always going to be elite so it just seemed like a bad trade at the time and has proven even more so now...

But that is fantasy. If you even knew what I was talking about then you would understand my point. Melb HAD pick 2 and they traded that for Pick 9 (Salem) and Dom Tyson. Pick 2 was J Kelly.

Not really if the Dees had the time again we would still do the trade again we got Salem and Tyson and Hunt with the pick so good chance they will all play 150 plus games at the football club. If you believe what you read i think Melb liked Billings with pick 2 and not sure who we would have got with the early 20s pick.

Perhaps Melbourne weighed up the situation and decided that his long term loyalty to them wasn't set in concrete?

Who knows the inner reasons why clubs go one way or another? It isn't necessarily incompetent drafting.

North were all over getting in to a trade to acquire Josh, but didn't have the currency to pull the deal off. Perhaps this played some role in Melbourne deciding to go elsewhere?

Fair enough, I assumed Kelly was the consensus #2 pick.

So you wouldnt trade those 3 players for Josh Kelly? I would. I think all 3 are ok players but watching Kelly the last few weeks he is already top 5-10 mid in the league

there is no doubt Kelly is a star but we haven't seen him handle a hard tag yet. But no i wouldn't trade Salem Hunt and Tyson for Kelly, I think Salem and Hunt will be more than just ok players.

It wasn't just Salem, Tyson and Hunt for Kelly (pick 2). Melbourne also gave up pick 20ish as well as pick 2, so they could have picked a Zac Merrett with that pick had they kept it, for all we know.

Anyway, Melbourne have stated numerous times that they wouldn't have picked Kelly at 2 anyway (Roos confirmed on League Teams a couple of weeks ago that they had Billings ahead of him, as the most recent example I'm aware of), so it's a moot point.

Melbourne had pick 1 and 2, Scully and Trengove, Martin went at #3.
Melbourne picked Toumpas at #4 and Wines went at #6.

Not fantasy

Actually, Paul Roos has said on the record that if they had pick 2 they would have taken Jack Billings.

So it was seem it cost the Saints the most!

Edit: Just noticed that I wasn't the first to post it

"Minute".

A very very short period over a career.
"at the moment" doesn't mean "one minute".

It means here, now. Along with the whole Melbourne wouldn't have picked him because they knew he'd go to North asap is one hell of a delicious reach

Thanks.

Irrelevant, but thanks.

I know a Freudian slip when I see/hear one.

Who knows why Melbourne did what they did? I imagine there's more to it.

It's particularly impressive given he's already renewed one contract at GWS, why would he do that if his entire focus was a Tom Boyd like "just get me to North"?

All this talk from North fans that Kelly is desperate to get to their club. But why the need to offer such a massive contract that is too good to refuse? It seems Kelly is desperate to stay at GWS & only an offer too good to refuse will see him depart...

(I realise this applies to StK as well but it's North fans that are saying Kelly wants to go 'home' to follow in his fathers footsteps & play for the club he barracked for as a kid. Yeah right).
