I'd rather get Caddy for the compo pick.

I wonder if a deal like Simpson + one of Horlin-Smith, Guthrie or Murdoch for Mini draft pick # 2 would be a consideration? It'd give them two mature bodies that are AFL ready. Both look promising but are young enough that they could play for GWS for years to come.

I'm trying to get my head around why we would do that.....

I think GH-S, Guthrie and Murdoch will get plenty of AFL football over the coming season.

I keep thinking of CS and his blooding youth on merit creed and then thinking of the HMAc thing ( age $$ and injuries) and it just seems counterintuitive. I get the ruck needs etc but then go younger - not a stop gap who may not even get back on the park this year...

Throw in the fact we might have to drop a promising rookie as well and it just seems odd to me..

Now if we lose a ruck then the equation changes... but West did great this year as a 2nd ruck playing first.... Daws is getting healthy and has the 1 spot to lose really. Vards is coming back and Orren is the safety blanket. To think we are going to get an Ottens esq player back in a year seems a bit wishful thinking. i get the need and all for a Cox or Mummy but thery take time to develop.... see OTTO.... and as such we are gonna have to wait fror the fruit to bare...

Go Catters

The Hawthorn wobbles at the end of this year is more evidence that clubs must balance their run to the finals. It will have firmed up the cats view on needing a strong squad and the sharing of duties over the season. then best 22 for round 21 - finals.

I feel HMac is wanted to enable us to go into every game with a strong ruck option (unlike this year). Hmac and Simpson play their share for the season and the fit in form player goes into battle during finals. West / Vardy share No.2.

Stephenson. I am sure Geelong want to give him a second year and if Hmac arrives they would prefer to have him on the Rookie list. There is no rule I know of that says you can't pay a rookie more than the basic wage (within cap - of which we have plenty this year). That would satisfy his need for financials to be OK if he was to launch from the Rookie list next year.

If Simpson or GHS or Murdoch are packaged in trade for a 17yo I would be amazed. If the Caddy hunt misses the target it will be compo for the 17 yo. That would make some sense.

I am even warming to residual thoughts that a fit 21 yo Cowan with 3 years in our system may be as good a bet as Caddy. The only ever "sort of" inside info I have had from GFC was in response to a question in 2010 about the kids -"who is looking most promising" . The answer: watch out for Cowan.

Any way I digress. Josh Kelly only if a sensible trade is used. No flapping about.

I agree and Cowan did stand out in the NAB cup series before the subsequent injury which put him out for the year.
It seems that 2013 will be the worst time of all for a young player to be cut down by long-term injury with new rules and transition being a pre-requsit.
It's good that a few supporters realize the blokes potential and I'd be quite shocked if they get rid of him.

Ghost you summed it up perfectly, Westy did a terrific job in only his 1st season as the main ruckmen.
He may not have dominated like Ottens did but what more could you expect from a 40 gamer.
Another 2 seasons and he is going to fulfill his potential

The idea that the no.1 spot is Simpsons to lose is what originally lead me to think we'll chase a ruck men. IMO he's done very little to prove deserving of the no.1 spot. He might be good enough, i'm not the best person to judge but the idea of taking a 5 game player with an injury record as your no.1 ruck men seems risky. Right now the coaching team that watch him train day in day out are in a better position to judge and they are saying we want McIntosh but this can't come as a shock.

Why McIntosh and not a younger ruck? A couple of weeks ago I was trying to find an Ottens type deal but there's nothing on the market. Gillies is asking too much, Clarke is a bean pole that's average in the rucking and there's nobody else decent on the market. McIntosh while not ideal is the best we can hope for. He's cheap on the trade table, can have instant impact and buys us time to either develop Simpson further or wait for someone more promising to come on the market.

If Simpson or GHS or Murdoch are packaged in trade for a 17yo I would be amazed.

I would be absolutely filthy on the club if the packaged off these kids. Particularly Murdoch. He could be anything.

Mmmm...if it means we're out of the running for Caddy then no. But another J.Kelly at the club does sound good ;)

Just on twitter - Bottom aged Josh Kelly from Sandy runs 9mins.48secs...2nd fastest time ever recorded for Combine/Camp

Still would come second by some distance at Cats pre season if Biclavs is still around!

Played against Josh when he was playing for East Brighton in u 16's.

A close mate of mine who played with him at Sandy this year said.....

" hes just good at everything, nevers f**** up,never underperforms but he doesnt stand out in a flashy way, just gets the job. Most genuine bloke"

Wish I still had the champs but I don't. Sounds good and would have a year in our system before being asked to play.

If we miss on Caddy perhaps this guy should be our next target with the compo pick.

we can wait till 2014 can't we?

May as well keep it up our sleeve for another quality player that pops up rather than using it for the sake of it.
Sounds like Josh is good but wouldn't go top 20 in the draft

With the names Josh and Kelly it's the double whammy. The holy grail for Wellsy
It is in line with the Taylor Hunt selection ;)

2014 could give the commentators fits:

"Hunt kicks the ball into Taylor who marks and gives the handball off to Kelly who finds Hunt with a low scorching pass. Hunt gets the ball onto quickly Kelly who kicks long and strong and goals from outside 50"

According to Nightmare he seems to think that Kelly would go anywhere from 3rd-9th next season. He's a good size, obviously great athlete but I don't think he'll have too much trouble putting on body size and reportedly he's just really clean. Seems like Bartel with Hogan's running capacity.

Yeah...if you get one of those picks from GWS, you've got your pick of anyone born in that 3/4 month window, who would be eligible for the 2013. Therefore, you'd suggest that the players who are picked would be expected to be in the top half dozen players in the class of 2013, at this stage.

With so many kid's in so may drafts it comes down to opinion on who's 4 , who's 8 anyway. Thats sound a better than good skillset. But Im not sure he is worth the comp and P15

Sounds more like his name's sake James.

I get the feeling he's not quite as hard inside as Kelly. Mind you it's all 2nd hand info, I've not seen him play.

It'd be enticing to see what Wells could pull out and how well our coaching staff could develop that sort of talent. But yeah that feels a bit pricey. I rather package the component pick with a player.
