NEXT year's free agency pool has lost another big fish with West Coast spearhead Josh Kennedy quietly recommitting to the Eagles until the end of 2020.

Kennedy, who turns 31 on Saturday, was due to come of contract at the end of 2019 and would have been one of the biggest names in next year's free agency group.

However, AFL.com.au understands the dual Coleman medallist signed a new one-year deal some time ago that bound him to the Eagles for the next two seasons.

Edit: Decent banter from Nick Bowen

I think there’s a very good chance this extension involves the re-allocation of some money to make a Gaff or Lycett deal work.

He’s obviously still worth an absolute mint but I wonder if this is the club and he agreeing to do each other a solid for a guy now dealing with some lingering injuries.

Surprised they announced this, I would've thought they'd let him get to the end of his contract and say he's retiring next week, only to resign him for another week and claim that it's the week after he's retiring, only to resign him for another week and claim that it's the week after he's retiring, and so on
He hasn’t re-signed. The bloke who wrote the article got it wrong.

Why he's only 30?

He turns 31 on Saturday and he's missed half the season through injuries.

Complete list of guys who've played more than one season for the Eagles and played past their 32nd birthday: Mainwaring, Cox, Glass, Hart, Matera, Priddis, Banfield, Kemp, Embley, Lamb.

Past their 33rd birthday: Mainwaring, Cox, Glass, Hart, Matera.

Past their 34th birthday: ...

It proves a trend over several decades of our players dropping off pretty quickly in their early 30s.

Kennedy will be 32 at the end of next season. We've only had ten guys play on past that point.

And he's spent most of this year banged up, and he cops a hammering every time he plays. The odds of him playing into 2020 are not good.

I think it proves pretty well that, historically, Eagles players don’t tend to last too long after they hit 30.

Maybe it’s the increased travel, maybe it’s something in the water, but we haven’t exactly had an army of player contributing post 30.

Injuries have been collision based not soft tissue... Happy to back him in, just tell him to drink more milk :D
