I don't remember him attempting any long kicks, he always looked to be trying to pinpoint a pass when he did kick it.

He banged in a long one to Taberner... the one Tabs plucked just about in the goal square, bumping off Hibberd with his hip and taking the mark without jumping.

He can definitely bang them long. Not quite as flat on his long kicks as someone like Clancee or Mundy, but they land in very good spots. Seems to do a good job at weighting them, and putting them to the advantage of the forward.

That kick to Tabs looked virtually identical to a couple he kicked long while Tabs was running back towards our F50 in the Peel game vs Swans. Long kick, relaxed delivery, weighted to the advantage of the forward.

Just watched his interview on FFC.com...does not seem like how he has been portrayed on here at all. Impressive.

Also side question...he mentioned in his interview that his step-son was there at the game. Are step-sons eligible for father-son? As a step-father myself I would be pretty disappointed if they are not.

what's his kicking like? long, penetrating? seemed to be really good off both sides in his u18s video but obviously too hard to tell based on his first proper hit out. can anyone who goes down to training give us an insight?

You will not be able to pick if he is a lefty with a good right or a righty with an even better left I had to ask which is his natural foot .
I didn't know how many were watching him just before he came on but a mate of mine who's seats are next to the interchange bench said he was hopping from one foot to the other and doing a little nervous dance but as soon as he was given the all clear sprinted onto the ground to take up position and the biggest grin ever seen on a football oval .

That's what his job description card read and he followed it to the letter till he was instructed to try the long shot for goal .
Pav amended the Job card but against the wind and 55 metres out was a bit far.

His kicking is exquisite off both sides. If you watch him kick on his left you could easily mistake him for a lefty. He's capable of a long bomb but can send it low and hard inside 50 just like Sonny Walters. (Can probably kick it further than Sonny though).

Big call. Sonny landed one from outside 50 in the rain against GC a few back. He has real distance not just flat and hard.

Put him on Lewis Jetta and just enjoy the sideshow.

Clarke I believe. Clarke had just turned around to start running forward and the ball shot back at him almost before he knew it was there.

I knew Josh could run and kick, but his tackling and defensive pressure have come up to AFL class a lot quicker than I expected, and his vision and handspeed in contested/ground ball situations is probably the biggest surprise. He keeps doing it too... did it over and over in the Peel games I saw on TV and did the same on a number of occasions in the Dons game. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he turns out to be one of our best at this, based on what I've seen so far (small sample, but I'll take liberties :)).

Kid has more weapons than I realised. Really happy for him and his family. Terrific debut, and really looked like he enjoyed it.

Interesting, from what I've seen his best attribute is the precision and creative handball. Also he's almost impossible to lay a hand on, even in tight close contested situations. Can wrong foot opponents quite easily. His kicking can be hit and miss, but looks very natural off either foot. He is prone to the odd grubber/clanger from what I've seen.

His strength is what surprised me, the boy can lay a tackle. Really drives the shoulder in.

The kick to Taberner in the third (with the right) was a thing of beauty.

That is probably Michael maxed out though.
From 50 metres, he has kicked goals and, probably nobody more surprised than himself.

Josh Simpson 50 metre kicks are going to become regular occurrences.

We're going to have some kind of player here, if he can do all the magical 1%ers, have high tackling numbers and emulate freaky acts like Rioli but also earn somewhere in the low 20's possession wise and bob up with a goal or two like Hilly it's hard to see how teams will stop him in the future. Crazy agility and evasiveness and a genuinely dual sided player who can roost it comfortably off either foot, how the hell do you keep a lid on a prospect like this?

Almost more exciting than all of that is he's gone from a homesick flake (paraphrasing here) to a genuine, bought in RTB stud in just a year, his ceiling is enormous.

Was literally in the process of telling my mate who hadn't seen the Peel game the other day about his second quarter goal assists to Taberner when that happened, uncanny. Lovely bit of body work from the Tabernator too.
