And all of those over a decade ago. Get with the times!

Dahlhaus anyone. Or perhaps the raft of recent mature age rookies/recruits like Puopolo, Barlow, J Pod, Duigan etc etc.

Drafting, even recent drafting, is far from an exact science and gems can still be found with late or rookie picks.

Rounds and Johnno are in the gun IMO.

I'd be mildly surprised if all of Tarrant, Wood, Jolly, Macaffer and Krackouer are at the club next year (I think one at least will go). I personally think Taz is the most vulnerable of them as he's on a one year deal and is just one more calf strain away from being in serious doubt for 2013, especially with the emergence of Keeffe.

The other one is Maxwell, I honestly think he'll do a Harley and Ling if we take out the big one this year. I think the end will come quickly for him and it'd be nice if he went out on a high. Ling was just 30 and Harley 31 when they finished up so at 29 as a two time premiership captain it'd be a pretty sweet way to go out.

That would give us 4 before we even get to the possibility of a player being squeezed out due to the salary cap, which IMO is inevitable. 4-5 is what we'd be after pick wise at the draft table.

Retiring off Maxwell, steady on. I'd think the injury toll from start of this season has shown we need to keep more experienced players so young players who aren't ready don't get thrown in out of their depth.

I was expecting more of Rounds, he'd have to be disappointed not getting a game with the amount of injuries we've had.

If Cloke goes then Taz needs to stay.

Can't believe the hate people have towards Thomas, give him a break, what's he done to you

We'll see about Maxwell. Three players have gone out with plenty left in the tank after premierships in the past 5 years, the two I've already mentioned and Crawford.

IMO the only way that he does walk away is if we take out the big one so TBH I'd be quite happy if he retires at the end of the year....

Yes, of course gems are found in the rookie draft. But to suggest draft order means nothing is beyond naive. Recruiting departments are well-resourced these days, moreso than ever before. How'd Carlton go while working their way through draft penalties for being salary cap cheats?

Not suggesting that draft order isn't important or that clubs aren't better at assessing a players potential. Just making the point that a player can't be discounted purely because he's a late pick as other in this thread have done.

Higher Draft picks have Higher Expectation is what I think you mean

Well this guy implies it.
Nice one you waited 3 days to hang some shit.. let me enlighten you
for example after the first 10 or so picks the players picked, in the order that they are picked is pot luck.. How does a player like d beams fall to pick29 he would be top 10 if this draft went again, how does d hanneberry the rising star of that draft go one pick later did the pies *** up? The pies didnt wait until pick 75 to get Thomas ffs they recognised some talent obivously, they probally rated the guy before him and the guy after him just about the same. The whole recuiting thing is a bit overated , the dollars pumped into the footy dept is the difference, would d beams be as good at the tigers or demons *** no... will you get your nose hairs twisted after reading this *** yeah.

It is not Pot Luck mate. The Recruiters could work on a Draft Class for around 6 or so Years so they know these Kids Pretty Well. So I doubt it's just taking a Stab in the Dark like it use to be at the Start

Again what stopped every other club picking up say pick 48 in any draft that particular player would of been overlooked 2 times by every club until eventually a club drafts him. The 100 or so players picked up every year have talent for sure, and the recuiters recognise this, but draft order means jack quite easily beams could of gone to brisbane with the pick before quite easily Hanneberry could of come to the pies the pick after beams. Pot luck.. whos to say the swans didnt spew when the pies called out beams. Who in the history of phantom drafts has picked the exact order its pot luck.. What do you do when the club with pick 34 and you have pick 35, picks the player you have had your eye on, ffs you just pick another player of close or equal talent . been happening since the inception of the draft. A side note how do you explain all the players that amounted to jack shit. Just bad luck?

I'll apologise on his behalf for having a life?
Evrerything else you say is so staggeringly ignorant I'm lost for words. Maybe football will make more sense to you when you learn to stand up to pee.
Peanuts can type wtf are you. My veiws are just as valid as the other guy, If i insulted your boyfriend so be it. Whats stagering is that you peanuts are pies supporters. enjoy reading about saturdays result in the sunday papers il be attend myself. Mommy gave me permission to go..
You people dont follow the pies no way...

One reason Beams went so low was the fact he'd played in the Qld competition and recruiters found it difficult to judge his worth in comparison to e.g. kids who played in the TAC comp, so most went for the safer option of not drafting him high. Beams opted to go into the draft rather than go on the GC list. Plus he was part of a pretty impresive draft with a strong group of players in the 11-30 picks.

I may not be 100% correct with all the details, but this is pretty much as I remember the situation at the time.

Have a life get off the gear shifter 100 posts in 3 years as compared to you and your boyfriend combined 5000 you jokers have hired secretaries to type drible that you think.

The pies have on average every year have say 6/7 picks across all drafts.
What do you think Hine rocks up with 7/8 players on his list He would have a pool of 20 / 25 players minium. How the *** would he know what every other club is going call out on draft day..

Certainly there are players who don't make the jump from kid to AFL player, but this is not the result of any lack of research and testing on the part of the recruiters. A 'jack shit' player is also a black mark against the recruiter.

By way of comparison, go back to earlier drafts and check the number of success stories. James Hird's draft is a good example. Of all the players drafted in the top 10 that year, hardly anyone lasted any length of time in the AFL. I work with someone who was picked in the early 40s - he did not last more than a season and the names around him are unfamiliar. Hird went in the 80's.

There was no draft camp and probably not much thought given to a person's psychological make up or family or personal circumstances, unless it was some obvious clash with the club's expectations.

Clubs employ more people and give much time to recruitment, as TD points out. Clubs make mistakes but they are not as frequent as was the case before this century.

I like they way you are are thinking. Imagine they money we could save on recruiting. Those dollars could be better spent on sparkly B&W shoe laces for our players boots or mood changing Hyper Coloured guernseys which would not only be groovy but clash friendly as well.

By the way pass the doobie around.;)

Nobody here is likely to argue that Hine only had one name against each of the picks on draft day. Of course they have an extensive list of maybe as many as you say. No point getting upset over a non issue. Fight the fights you have to fight but there's no point seeing conflict where it does not exist.

Ease up, man, you're heading for a red card at this rate! Labelling fellow posters "peanuts" and implying that they have homosexual relationships with each other, just because they hold differing POV to yours, is childish, provacative and belligerent. This is a forum for the exchange of differing ideas and opinions about footy and the Pies. Let's keep the debate civil.

Having an opinion does not automatically make it valid. Imo you have no idea how the recruiting process works. You have a point about the importance of development programs after players are drafted and if that was your main point I would have been agreeing with you even though your a tool.

To be fair that was all accurate although how he knew I have no idea. For the record it was just a phase though! (not that there is anything wrong with that). No red card, let the kid go I want to see where this ends up.
Also I didn't realise I had 100 posts! Do I get a prize for cracking the ton?

I would be flattered that the kid thought so highly of your content or style as to actually source an archive of your BF works and entries.
