Watse of talent now. Had over come a horror run of injuries and now he will be too old to have impact and come back. Maybe he won't but a two years out of the game in his prime years has cost him.

It seems pretty obvious to me his career is already over. He'll never play another AFL game even if he retains his spot as a rookie.

Not sure his career is over but the 2 year ban is going to make it extremely difficult to return to the top level.
If he has the desire to make it then it is not out of the question he will be successful in returning. Obviously Collingwood think both Thomas and Keeffe can make a return otherwise they would not be entertaining rookie listing them.

Josh Thomas isn't even that good to begin with, after 2 years out of the game and out of elite training he is going to take a year just to get back to the level has was at in 2014, and by that time he'll be old and his position will be taken by our younger better mids like Adams Aish Treloar De Goey Crisp Broomhead ect. The club made it clear retaining Thomas and Keeffe was a "moral" one rather than a football one, however keeping Keeffe makes sense because he holds currency being a decent 204cm KPD. Thomas is a dime a dozen vanilla inside mid

He's got as much chance of succeeding as any other player drafted in this years rookie draft. Free swing for the pies to retain keeffe and Thomas, the rest is up to them to prove they are worthy of promotion back on the senior list in 2017. The arrival of greenwood de goey treloar and Adams mean Thomas may be pushing shit uphill of surviving at Collingwood, although might still have chances at other clubs. Keeffe may have more chance.
 
I'm reserving judgement until they turn up for day 1 and see how much motivation they both have to get back. Having lost it all and given a chance should be enough to see them back at their peak physically. They have a chance, with application, the right attitude, commitment, talent and some good luck they could make it.

This will be one of those 'what could have been' senarios. Even in the season that impressed alot of us, his numbers werent that great per game.

Now when he returns it will have been 3 years since that impressive rookie season, and i doubt he will be able to improve upon it.
 
He wasn't that great anyway, he wont get a game in our Midfield.

Keefe is the one i want to keep, massive potential.

Younger than Brown Reid Cloke and White and potentially better than Frost or even Marsh. Only Moore and Grundy/Witts are younger and have gone past him. at 27 he has tons of footy ahead of him and more chance of making it back as a magpie than Thomas.
 
Let's just wait & see.
Plenty of water to flow.
I guess we only retain them on the rookie list for season 2017 if they tick all the boxes (by November this year).

People forget that Marty Clarke was shit even before he left for Ireland back at the end of 2009.

Many folks just thought it was because his heart wasn't in it, but fact was he was just slow and was too soft to kick in any manner other than safely (ie. he's a serial chipper).

How we gave him a 3 year contract is beyond me. Too much romanticism involved there over a half decent 2007 finals campaign.

At least JT can play.

Josh Thomas HAD a lot of potential coming in to season 2013-2014 and showed his class in a few stand out games which is why collingwood are holding on to him. He was never a starting 22 player, and with the new inclusion in our club coupled with development from our draftees, his place only gets pushed back more. When he is eligible to play, he will be 26 years old, would have had 2 years of little-no high level football experience and at 178cm, he seems a little out of place in the modern game. He HAD potential, but the club and the game has developed to the point where hes become more or less irrelevant in terms of making a big impact. Will be handy as a depth player but nothing more, would be worth putting effort in to draft picks and see them overtake Thomas' influence on the club

He will be 25.
(Keefe will be 27)

I'm not optimistic about Joshs future at this level, and wasnt even before the suspension, but i dont think age will be the deciding factor.

If he can come back in the right physical and mental condition he could still have a decent future ahead of him. If you can fill an immediate need then clubs will be happy to pick up a mature recruit (Pods, Goodes and Dwyer all come straight to mind but im sure there are others) - and Thomas has the added advantage of already having a few years in thr AFL system.
Not saying it's likely, and I do think Keefe is better suited to still having an AFL future given his position (despite being older) but the ball is well and truly in Thomas' court, and it's all about how he is approaching this time away and how badly he wants to stay in the AFL.

As a comparison, look at Dan Menzell - more time away, and with added injuries to boot, but Geelong have stuck by him and hopefully he has better luck next year. (or look at what Freos done with Morabito)
