In a bizarre ruling by the WAFL the 2 week suspension handed out to Fremantle recruit Josh Treacy for a careless tackle in a WAFL scratch match last weekend now becomes a 4 week suspension. The crazy rule says that a suspension handed out in WAFL level must be served at that WAFL level and not at AFL level where he was likely due to make his debut this weekend. Now the rule gets more stupid because the WAFL season starts 2 weeks after the AFL season meaning he cannot play either WAFL or AFL for at least 4 weeks.

But wait there is more.................He can still play scratch matches even though he was suspended in a scratch match.

Bloody hell ............a 2 week suspension is a 2 week suspension. Not a 4 week suspension. Who gives a crap where he serves his time out as long as he does his 2 weeks. What would happen if the WAFL was delayed due to covid or something. Would he have to wait a year???

All because the WAFL cannot align dates to start the same time as AFL.

This isn't just a WAFL thing, it happens with the VFL (and no doubt all other state leagues) as well.
Cop a 1 week suspension in the VFL so cant play AFL, but then the VFL team has a bye that week so it becomes "2 weeks" you miss in the AFL.

It is what it is.

Consider this - a player in a state league scratch match snipes opponent, cops 2 weeks. The following are possible scenarios:

- Player selected in state league match - serves 2 weeks from Round 1 of the state league competition - fair cop
- Player selected in AFL match - scot-free if suspension is limited to state league - a licence to snipe away if you knew you were playing AFL the next week
- Player suspended for 2 weeks of state league scratch matches, then lines up Round 1 in state league or AFL - a licence to snipe away as above, no real penalty for sniping

The only rational outcome was to suspend him for 2 competitive matches, whenever they happen. Results don't matter in scratch matches but committing offences does - thought the logic behind that would be clear.

Yes. If a player decides to belt someone in the last game of the year he serves a suspension when next season arrives three months later, are you upset at that possibility too? If Andrew Gaff decided to hone his boxing skills on Andrew Brayshaw again in a pre-season match, would you be okay if his suspension was wiped in time for Round 1?

Agree this needs to be looked at

The rule should be you serve 2 weeks separately

So in Treacy's case - he misses the first two weeks of AFL but is available the third. (Would just need to have some rules which allocate which days relate to which round as some AFL game dates are a bit weird)

However in the WAFL he isn't eligible to play for 2 games either.

A little bit different but this reminds me of Jack Redpath's suspension in 2017 which carried over into 2018. He was allowed to play preseason AFL games, and then played a VFL practice match during the same weekend as round 1 of the AFL. As a result, the AFL then ruled he had to miss round 2:

"His suspension rendered him ineligible to play at any level on any weekend when his AFL suspension was applicable," the league said in a statement."The AFL has therefore determined that his suspension was not completed as required last weekend and the final match of his three-game penalty will now be served this weekend."

If you've got a problem with the way it has been handled then please take it up with the admin.

It's easy - Treacy serves a two match ban (excluding pre-season games), whether it's 2 WAFL, 1 WAFL and 1 AFL, or 2 AFL - whenever it reaches two competitive matches that he sat out, his suspension is over.

If your preparation gets disrupted because of fixture quirks with the WAFL and AFL - well maybe don't commit a suspendable offence in the first place.

So a player gets a 1 match suspension at the end of the WAFL season - his team doesn't make finals - so he can't serve that to round 1 2022 - are you suggesting it is fair he misses the entire AFL finals series.

No. If he gets a 1 match suspension at the end of the WAFL season, he serves it in the first competitive match he is eligible to play in. This would be just the first match of the AFL finals, if he is eligible to play AFL finals. If he is still playing WAFL next season, there is no suspension over his head (unless he gets suspended during AFL finals).

As said above, this same ancient rule is in other local comps also

Even my beloved team has been the victim of it

Does it need to go? No

So by that inference - Treacy should be able to serve his sentence in Rd 1 and 2 of the afl season and be available for Rd3

That isn't the case though - it's what it should be IMO

Normally yes, but given the WAFL has not yet resumed it's not fair as it means theoretically a person could snipe away in their first WAFL pre-season match and line up for the first proper WAFL hitout - hence no real penalty. When it comes to finals, I think missing selection for an AFL final or two is enough punishment.

As I said before, maybe don't commit a suspendable office so fixture quirks don't prolong your suspension. I phrased my prior post poorly, sorry.

AFL have overruled WAFL and Treacy to be available for round 3 of AFL. AFL agree 2 weeks is 2 weeks and not 4. If WAFL had of started 2 weeks before AFL then it would have been just 2 weeks. WAFL will be pissed off at being overruled.

Isn't the carry over to the AFL mandated by the AFL themselves and not WAFL?

In any event all the best to him for his AFL debut.

There was that Colligwood player a few years ago who played VFL and AFL on the same day. So when major and minor league don't have overlapping timeslots it should be possible to serve a 2 weeks suspension in 1 week...

Jokes aside it is pretty obvious that suspensions with different leagues don't work well with different byes. Had to come to that situation at some stage.

Don’t do it isn’t a valid argument. Do the crime, do the time not time plus more time. Surprised the AFL actually used common sense for once.

And just like that Dangerfield is cleared to play in a VFL practice match today despite his suspension. Never change AFL.
