Brisbane Lions Senior Coach Chris Fagan has made one change to his side for Sunday's match against Essendon at Etihad Stadium. Josh Walker has been named to make a return to the Senior side at centre half-forward after several impressive performances in the NEAFL.
Walker collected 24 disposals and took 12 marks in the Lions NEAFL side's 96-point thrashing of the GWS GIANTS last weekend. Sunday will be Walker's third Senior match of the season, after playing against Hawthorn in Round 8 and Adelaide in Round 9.
Brisbane Lions forward Josh Walker came off the ground after receiving a knock to his right calf in a marking contest midway through the first quarter against Geelong.
The 24-year-old former Cat had his lower leg strapped and tried to perform run-throughs along the boundary, but was clearly hindered by the injury and sat out the rest of the game.
MEDICAL ROOM: Versatile tall Josh Walker limped off late in the second term with a calf injury. He had it strapped and came back out after the main break. The former Cat had an excellent first half but was slowed down after the setback, but was still a strong contributor.
2. Josh Walker has breathed new life into a career that was on the scrap heap at the bye. There was talk within the Lions of paying out contracts to free up list and salary cap space to lure a big fish and Walker would have been near the top of the list. His form over the past month would have changed that.
4. Remember Josh Walker?
After 34 games at Geelong across four years, the big forward has been quietly plugging away at the Brisbane Lions, providing support for the young Lions line-up. While he's been in and out of the senior team over the past year and a half, Walker had a break-out game against the Bulldogs. He moved around the ground with ease, marking well and bringing teammates into the game. While Walker didn't get on the scoreboard, he finished with 15 disposals, four contested marks and three inside-50s, and was a valuable linking player.
I don't think that really happened. So here I am sitting in Section 67 and Josh takes a mark and lines up from about 45 out on an acute angle.
First quarter, Saturday night versus GC.
So I call out a bit of encouragement ..... "C'mon Josh.....put it through"
The nice old "senior" Lions supporting lady behind me is highly sceptical:
"Oh no, the old bloke's got it.....he'll never kick that"
"Old???.....old???" says I ....."madam............ he's 24!!!"
Josh drills it.
"Not bad for an OLD bloke" says I to madam
We both have a laff.
#14. Josh Walker
Josh Walker was one of the Lions’ best players in the final month of the season, leading the way in contested marks and chipping in with goals at crucial points.
It was a slow start to the year for Walker, who played just two Senior matches in the first 13 rounds, but a string of strong NEAFL performances saw him called back up to the Senior side in Round 15 and he wouldn’t be displaced again.
Walker's ability to play forward or back was valuable on numerous occasions, along with his ability to help out in the ruck. If he can continue the form he displayed at the back end of 2017, Walker will be a key member of the Lions side in 2018.
Senior matches: 10, NEAFL matches: 8
