Nerves set to kick in on Josh Watts’ AFL Draft D-day

It would be a dream come true for the 194cm big man, who has come on in leaps and bounds in 2014.

“There is some excitement but I’m not that nervous at the moment, I’m still not sure what will play out,” Watts said.

“I will be nervous on the day no doubt, but at the moment I’m feeling pretty good.

“I’ve had exams so that has blocked it out for me I guess.”

Watts impressed at the national under-18 carnival, and also showcased his skill set on grand final day when he played in the curtainraiser — the AFL Draft Combine’s best 24 draft hopes against the AIS Academy team.

Looks a likely type.

This has the potential to be a really good pick for you guys. I've watched a heap of him over the last two years and rated him as the second best Tasmanian prospect this year. I consider him more effective in defence than up forward at this stage although when he is catching them he can be a very dangerous CHF as evidenced by his game at Dandenong this year. Very skinny and does pick up a few niggles but hopefully it doesn't hold him back, so skinny though that I see him as a third tall but with more scope to become a tall wing than a KPP. Needs to lift his intensity a bit but no one expects him to be perfect this early. Very mobile, Kicking and running for someone that tall is at elite levels, he'll really surprise you next year when he sprints up the ground from HB and then receives a 1-2.

Has been given Black's number 20 apparently.

Watts has been given the honour of wearing the Lions' coveted No.20 guernsey next season, previously worn by Brownlow medallist Simon Black.

Following Black's retirement 12 months ago, the club elected not to offer the guernsey to any of the 2014 playing list, but it will be back in service next year.

Watts said he found out on Saturday, when coach Justin Leppitsch visited his Tasmanian home.

"They gave us a box with my jumper in it, so dad opened it up and said "you've got No.20".

"It's a shock, but an honour as well. I've got big shoes to fill."

That is a huge call from the club. They must have a lot of faith in him to give him an amazing number such as the 20

Perhaps they thought it better to give it to a different style of player (KPD) to minimise comparisons and expectation, and even better to a bit of a roughy to further reduce pressure, both from the supporters and on the player himself.

At the end of the day it's just a number and its up to him to make it his number as well as Black's.

Is it just me, or did some of those highlights look a bit like... Jack Watts?

Congrats to Josh. Huge honor for him.

going to be exciting to see someone else wear #20.......... hopefully he turns into the next Blacky

I like it but then I always remember that you can't always get what you want.

As long as the pressure of the number doesn't give him his 19th nervous breakdown.
