Not according to 5AA who have spoken to the crows. Pick 20 a new player, pick 54 is Callinan upgrade and those are the only picks we will be using in the National Draft. In order to pick up Joyce in the pre-season we will not be using pick 64 in the ND but will have a pick in the pre-season (to be determined depending on if other clubs use all their ND picks or not).

Although I am a little confused about this as when Tippett finally drops off our list, then we gain another spot, hence another pick for the PSD. Leif was adamant though that only 20 and 54 would be used and 54 earmarked for the Callinan upgrade.
So that means we're still left with a list vacancy?

Once again I have no idea what the club are thinking.

I think it is more a case of Leif not giving the right info out. What I actually think is that we will use the first two ND picks, then 64 on Callinan. When Tippett drops off after the ND, then that extra 'pick'/spot will be used in the PSD on Joyce. Otherwise it seems likely we would have two picks in the PSD, which just seems weird to me.

Is Leif from 5AA or a Crows spokesman? The bolded is what I automatically assumed as well, and seems to be a near perfect outcome. I guess the numbers 54 and 64 could have been confused, because its hard to see how the alternative arrangement provides any benefit (unless we plan to re-draft Tippett before Sydney :p )

5AA are bigger morons than I thought if they don't understand the basic rules of the draft.

It pays not to listen to Rowey/Leif/anyone on 5AA

We will have picks 20 and 54 in the ND. Callinan upgraded with 64.

Tippett will then be delisted.

We will then pick up Joyce in the Pre Season Draft. Thats how the Crows explained it. Bit too complex for Rowey however :D

Hey guys - Having a discussion over on another Pies board, and we're not sure how the maths on your list situation works. We have it as:

In: Brad Crouch, Angus Graham, Pick #20, Pick #54, Pick #64 (Ian Callinan)
Out: Michael Doughty, Chris Knights, Brad Symes, Kurt Tippett

Joyce is being re-drafted onto the senior list, so he's no net change.

Isn't that five onto the senior list and only four out? Are we missing someone?

VV I'm no expert on this drafting stuff, but I think I remember reading its something to do with the AFL not counting Crouch in the ND? Can someone confirm its something like that?

If you have a look/do a search on the 'Tippets Gone' thread or post there someone will be able to let you know. But I'm fairly sure it's something like that... hope that helps.:)

No we were one short last year, Callinan played as nominated rookie.

edit: beaten to the punch

I agree totally Paladin, but from what I can gather Leith called the crows and then was immediately called into the studio to recap the conversation he had with a crow official. The other two weren't initially happy with him not knowing all the answers to the ridiculous question they were asking they sent him to make the call again. It was mostly Leith and Cornsey and weirdly enough Rowey seemed to mostly grasp the right concept, even if his math was a bit off.

Given he's little chance of being picked up by anyone else or of making his AFL debut next year, I would like to see Joyce picked up in the rookie draft rather then the PSD and potentially blind side a few clubs. We could have planned this earlier and picked up Colquhoun with our 3rd pick in the ND then Callinan later, but I suspect Port will get him in the PSD now. There would be a target we want though who won't slide to our choice in the rookie draft.

No downside for Joyce other than loss of face as he keeps his contract price either way.

It's not going to happen. The club has already ****ed him around enough. Plus it would be a PR disaster if we did it. After all the complaining about how Tippett treated us we would look like arseholes treating a player so poorly.

We only had 3 available spots on our list to fill in the ND. We would have had to delist somebody else to use another pick.

This Colquhoun guy is little more than this year's unfounded local draftee obsession. Happens every year.

Getting emotionally attached to 17 year olds is a waste of energy, because your team - unless you're talking top 5 pick or F/S - invariably never selects the players you've become invested in.

Joyce can still make it on our senior list for round 1 via the rookie draft?

If so same result just different pathway

There are no gift elevations this year. Aside from how shit it would make us look, if we drafted him as a rookie we would need a LTI for Joyce to be elevated and able to play.

my understanding is Joyce's base salary for his 2nd year contract is only $10k higher than the rookie base salary, the other option could be to Rookie Joyce and pay him the salary that he would have earned on his 2nd year of his contract

Putting Joyce on the rookie list is not an option.

At this stage the biggest concern is whether he'll even make it to our pick in the PSD.
Sorry but it is an option. The reality is no-one else will take him, he's not that good to be honest.

As for our PR, thats been shot to bits anyway by all this mismanagement. We've got to take hard decisions to mitigate our current and future draft losses. If Joyce gets a little upset but remains on the list at the same pay he's no worse off and will soon get over it.

What about his teammates? What do you think they would feel about it. I would think someone like Danger might think...oh so that why Kurt didnt hesitate to screw this club.

You treat players like garbage then you reap what you sew.

There is not the remotest chance we will screw this kid any more than we already have
