Bingo, there is no way I would want Hawthorn paying 1.3 million a season over 5 years, for a bloke who isn't even the best mid in the comp.

If Judd was on a reasonable salary then Judd.

Applying that logic, I'd rather have Tyrone Vickery than Lance Franklin at Carlton.

Of course I wouldn't. But the minute you start doing a cost-benefit analysis, based on player salaries (the amounts of which you're only guessing, by the way) you're dabbling in crazy-speak. Or just trying to find a reason, ANY reason, to not choose Judd.

I really like chapman.

if we palyed carlton this week and geelong the next, and I could choose a player to be missing it would be chapman - by a long way

He didn't burn off anyone, his opponent was metres behind, closed the gap, but just couldn't get to him in time.

Could've sworn he brushed off a would-be tackler, then ran away from him, during that passage of play.

I'd pick Judd, but this is hilarious.

It's fact. If you think that players don't stand taller when the likes Ablett, Judd, Brown stand besides them, you've got no idea.

Likewise if you think it doesn't have an impact on the mindset of the opposition. Some rise to the challenge, others are hindered by self doubt. All are aware of their presence.

He brushed off an arm of a lunging Geelong player coming from the side, but that wasn't the guy chasing him.

Anyone who says Chapman is surely taking the piss...great player but come on

Chapman, and no I'm not taking the piss.

He's got an aura about him that few players have and it's a trait that can't be understated.

He's got an aura because supporters and especially commentators overrate almost every aspect of his game. And his impact on them.

Of course a fantastic player, but he's not top of the pile.

It seems Judd is a better midfielder, but Chappy is a better forward, the question is what is more valuable?, a gun midfielder, or a gun forward/midfielder?

One of the most underrated players vs one of the most overrated.

Chapman is more effective with his disposal, kicks more goals and has a smart footy brain.

Obviously Judd's influence as a leader can't be understated and he can inspire his troops by winning the contested ball, bursting through a pack and kicking it to no-one in particular

Different type players, I would prefer Chapman but Judd as been better over his career for sure.

You think a tennis player won't be awed by playing Roger Federer in his prime?

You think a young defender won't know he's standing in front of a Jonathan Brown as opposed to a Mitch Clark?

You think a midfielder won't know that he's standing opposed to a Chris Judd as opposed to a Kade Simpson?

Likewise, you think a Mitch Robinson won't know that he's standing side by side a Chris Judd?

The answers to your questions are: no; probably, if he watches Brisbane; probably, if he watches Carlton; probably not, he's Tasmanian.

Bad example as I don't think anything can dampen the kid's spirits but knowing you've got a champion besides you will lift anybody's spirits.

Look, I agree that playing alongside very good players improves your game. This is because they're very good players, you don't want to let them down and so forth. Judd is one such very good player.

What I found ludicrous was the idea of Judd having an "aura". He doesn't. Nobody does. The "aura" that you believe you see is a product of the TV coverage.

Yeah but you think Judd is overated, Geelong have a terrible list and Scarlett is not a very good backman.

Judd is in the top 3 players in the comp - Chappy between 10-15.

Judd's left foot snap on the weekend was incredible - the reason he is one of the best in the AFL is that he can do things that 95% of players cannot. An out an out champion and one of the greatest mids of all time. If you cannot see this then you need to take your blinkers off when you watch him.

Not going to argue semantics because that's exactly what it is. Call it inspiration, call it presence, an aura, a local disturbance in the space-time continuum or whatever the hell you want to call it.

You're not honestly denying that an opposition supporter would be more aware of Judd than your average midfielder? He draws attention because he's such a damn good contested ball player, giving others more freedom. A byproduct of his aura. :)

Chapman 275 Goals 144 behinds

Judd 1988 Handballs
Chapman 1355 Handballs

Judd 2702 kicks
Chapman 2676 kicks

Judd 813 Tackles
Chapman 672 Tackles

I lol'd - pretty much sums up his game, or at least the one when he won the Norm Smith Medal.

Chapman is a gun, but Judd is a superstar and better.

The fact that you can make an argument for either and throw in maybe 20 other midfielders illustrates the worth of having players like Franklin/Riewoldt/Brown up and about and at their best.

I would argue that the difference between Murphy, Judd, Chapman, Swan, Pendles, Thomas, Watson and 15-20 others at their best is about 5%.

The best half dozen key position forwards in the comp are about 25% better than the next.

I'd actually be more interested in who a Carlton supporter would prefer.

Judd or Diesel Williams?
