Never been a fan of Judd and always liked Chappy. I think Judd is a terrific player and the best thing about him or at least when he went to Carlton he now lifts players around him. But goal kicking, hard nut midfielders are hard to come by, so Chappy for me.

Chapman, doesn't spray it off the boot like Judd does half the time.

As much as we love Chappy, it's debatable that he's ever been in the top 10 AFL players in a season in his career. It's debatable that Judd has ever been out of the top 10 AFL players since his second season.

Just because he's a 'footballer's footballer', he's ultra-reliable and everyone seems to love the way he goes about it, doesn't make him the equal of Judd. Come on now...

I'm rating it on who I'd rather have a beer with.

Anyone who says Chapman is surely taking the piss...great player but come on

Open your other eye.

It depends on the need of your team.

We have plenty of inside ball winners and don't need anymore. That's Judds #1 strength. He doesn't kick many goals, hardly ever takes an overhead mark and his disposal is questionable at best.

Our team needs someone to rotate through the midfield, kick goals and play the lead up forward role.

Despite BF's misnomer that we lack in the midfield it is actually our forward line that is deficient.

Horses for courses.

There's inside ball winners and then there's Chris Judd. Collingwood don't need a CHF with Cloke and Dawes but they'd kill for Lance Franklin or Jonathan Brown.

Chapman's a gun but Judd is arguably the most influential player in the competition. He's got an aura about him that few players have and it's a trait that can't be understated. Much like everybody knows that Jonathan Brown is up forward for the Lions, they know exactly where Judd is around the contest.

That's very true but what's the point of Judd winning clearances if the team isn't going to capitalize on them?

For example.

Essendon: Clearances: 50, Inside 50's: 59
Richmond: Clearances: 28, Inside 50's: 47

Yet we lost.

Now of course the quality of Judds possessions are going to be superior to our other insiders, except Watsons, but imo, a dynamite Forward/Midfelder like Chappy would be of more benefit to us, which was my initial post.

Chapman if we have to pay their respective salaries

Bingo, there is no way I would want Hawthorn paying 1.3 million a season over 5 years, for a bloke who isn't even the best mid in the comp.

If Judd was on a reasonable salary then Judd.

That is a fair point but it's probably a bit of anomaly as far as the season goes. If anything, it indicates that they beat you on the rebound, getting the ball inside 50 too easily despite being smashed in the clearances.

Essendon were always going to struggle with the players they had out of the side. Probably more a structure issue than a player one.

For mine, in a scenario such as this, it's best available over need, unless the difference is minimal or the need is dire.

You're kidding right?

Judd plays more as an inside mid at Carlton because that's the role that benefits the team. You reckon he suddenly lost his ability to play outside, and as a result had to change his game completely?

That goal he kicked on Friday night, where he scooped up the ball one-handed, burnt off his opponent, and kicked it through on his left foot, tells you that he's still got that side of his game.

That Judd COULD adapt his game to suit the team says even more about his quality.

The game has changed too: you can't be a pure inside or outside mid anymore. The best mids (see Collingwood as a great example) do both throughout a game.

But anyway, stick him in a team full of inside grunt players, and he'd be running around having fun on the outside of the packs again.

Chapman's a brilliant player though. Would love him at Carlton. Wouldn't swap Judd for him though.

Gee, this is a tough one for a Geelong supporter. I fully recognise that Judd is a superior player, but by the same token Chappy is the beating heart of this Geelong team. If you asked me now, I'd choose Chappy, just because of what he means to the club- but in terms of what he provides overall, you'd pick Judd every day.

Fortunately, they're dissimilar players, so we could take both ;)

He didn't burn off anyone, his opponent was metres behind, closed the gap, but just couldn't get to him in time. It was a goal roughly 70% of midfielders could have kicked, and was only notable because he was supposedly running around injured at the time.

Otherwise a reasonable post. Though I imagine most teams would prefer to keep Judd inside and get one of their other mids playing more outside. Judd's a better player doing the inside stuff at Carlton than he was doing the flashier stuff at WC, though definitely not as good to watch.
