The Age is reporting that Judd has been appointed to the Board "on a three year deal".

This reference seems strange, is Judd being paid? Seems strange as most I understood being a member of the Board was honorary, with only perhaps very basic reimbursement of expenses or a only nominal honourarium paid.

There is ZERO evidence that Judd has a great management brain. Reading the Wall Street Journal does not make you a great businessman. Please do not mention his various 'businesses', these are basically a football player adding their star power to a business. I need examples of real innovation and business nouse.

This is great news however on the football front. Replacing someone like Gleeson with Judd is a massive improvement as Judd has so much more insight into modern football and how it is run.

I think board positions have terms similar to three years and then you must seek re-election.

MLG became president in 2014 hence why he was reappointed in 2017.

It wasn't the reference to the length of the term I was raising an eyebrow to, it was the term used "a three year deal" - the implication being that Judd's been contracted onto the Board for payment, which surely wouldn't be the case.

Either the reporter in the article has used the wrong term or has no clue how Company Boards work and function and how directors are appointed.

Normally, all board roles have a set term and they are staggered so that there are a certain percentage of the seats becoming available each year.

For example, if a you had a 12 person board with each member being given a three year tenure, then each year four of the positions would be up for re-election.

It's a way of keeping the board fresh whilst allowing you to maintain a certain amount of inhouse experience & knowledge over a longer period of time.

You know as well as I do, Agro, that this is just the old boys' Carlton network looking after themselves. The Chief is just protecting himself from a board challenge at the end of the year in case we underperform on the field. He'll point to Judd's arrival and say, "see, I'm fixing things up."

Anyway, we'll see how things go. Judd has never impressed me, either as an individual, or as a thinker. But he doesn't have much to replace in Gleeson, so hopefully he makes a good fist of it.

Good to hear, Judd was always more likely to be the next Mike Fitzpatrick's than the next Leigh Matthews post retirement. Good academic. Believe he got a high 90's in his year 12 studies. Good to have someone who has been so heavily involved in the game for so long, just adds a different perspective to the businessmen and women of the board. Seems like a good person for that role.
 
Chris Judd's appointment to the Board is obviously an exciting development.

Positives
1. He was a genuine star of the game throughout his career. So, he was blessed with exceptional natural talent AND the diligence to prepare himself as well as he could AND the intensity to lift for the team when needed. Having exceptional natural talent gives him (potentially) an insiders insight into the programs and systems that need to be in place to enhance the exceptional natural talent we hope to (have) recruit(ed).
2. He presents as modest and thoughtful in respect of his ability and achievements. This suggests he will not be imbued with delusions of grandeur that just because he was a great footballer he somehow knows everything (or even anything) about running a football club.
3. According to Wikki he has completed a Uni course in corporate governance and is completing an MBA.
4. Whilst he was a West Coast premiership captain it has been obvious for some time that his heart beats navy blue.

Negatives
1. He has no track record but hey, everyone has to start somewhere. And it is not as if he knows nothing about the industry.

Gleeson is a premiership player & successful business man. We don't always know what goes behind the scenes but thanks for your efforts Gleeso

We probably haven't had many options re former players until now. Maybe Fraser Brown, but he appears like a personality that likes to do it his way.

I'm a believer that people should move on after 5-7 years with succession plans in place in most positions.

What Judd brings is youth, respect, playing knowledge, appears measured, but most of he tells me that he endorses the board and the direction it's taking.
