Absolutely agree. I hate these generalizations- I do a fair bit of work in one of Melbournes ‘top’ private schools and I see sad kid after sad kid that’s largely neglected because mum and dad are too busy chasing $ and keeping up with the Joneses.

Not to mention, Jamarra did attend Scotch College for his final four years of high school.

Without knowing what his issues are, it's not up to us to say what the contributing factors are. He could have just got mixed up with the wrong crowd, which can happen to anyone.

Either way, it's sad & I hope he's okay.

Most current day footballers have done the last 2-4 years in private school education

Jesus Christ this forum is full of ****ing idiots who just love being right for their own egos. Sure, there might be a small percentage of kids at a school that costs $40K per year that have issues that make adjustment to adulthood difficult but as a general rule there will be very few that will have experienced what Jamarra did growing up.

Check your ****ing privilege and drop the ego.

How many private school kids have seen some one murdered in front of them, how many have walked out and found a teenager hanging lifeless from a tree, how many have seen their mother beaten to a pulp daily, how many have been exposed to severe drug and alcohol abuse, how many have watched their mother reaped whilst they cower in the corner, how many have been beaten to a pulp themselves, how many live with inter-generational trauma, how many suffer severe racist abuse on a daily basis, how many have to adapt to a complete change of lifestyle, how many are lucky to see their family turn 50, how many are surrounded by disease and lack of opportunity. I could keep going with much more. The life of most private school kids cannot come close to those from many Aboriginal communities.

Im sure many have seen at least one of those scenarios. Not all bad things happen solely to the Aboriginal community.

Yes, some may have seen one, most of the kids in many Aboriginal communities have sadly seen all. I have lived both. I have lived on Aboriginal communities, supported Aboriginal communities, attended Private school and been a senior leader working in private schools. You cannot compare, its almost laughable to attempt to. I am really not sure that you realise how tough some Aboriginal kids have it daily. Yes some private kids have struggles but the support structures are there. There is a reason there is a discrepancy in life expectancy. Check the life expectancy of someone in Toorak and compare it to someone in Yarrabah.

So all kids deserve support then...even if they have been subject to one of the horrible situations you outlined.

Every person on this planet deserves support, it is not the argument. The discussion is that Private school kids do it as tough as thos on Aboriginal communities. The only people that would say that have never lived on a community and are not Aboriginal.

No one has suggested private school kids do it tougher than Indigenous kids.

The point I was trying to make, at least, was that we don't even know what Jamarra's issues are, so how can anyone know whether his background or upbringing is related to his current issues. There's no denying the intergenerational trauma Indigenous people experience.

It could just be a young man with a lot of money & spare time on his hands who has got mixed in with the wrong crowd. And perhaps recent deaths in his family last year made him more vulnerable.

What a sad, sad response, yet not surprising. I clearly said that all lives are important and every person needs support. Your comparisons between the struggles of Private School kids and the struggles of kids on Aboriginal communities is what is laughable. Until you have lived both, you have no idea.

Thanks for posting this. This hits hard and I cannot begin to imagine the negative psychological effect this 'reality' has on any person, let alone a young person trying to make some sense of the world they see and the world they have.

TBH...it would be a massive achievement for such a person to NOT become involved in drugs and/or crime.

However, I do not feel that your depiction is applicable to the subject of this discussion.
