I think everyone here agrees with both of you, but you can understand why the AFL is going above and beyond what you two and me and every poster on this board thinks is reasonable given their institutional relationship/responsibility to Indigenous Australia, as well as their unique relationship and bargaining with a player union, as well as the "small club/big club" nature of relationship with the AFL (we're a "subsidised team" so we hold less power to the AFL).

What I think you're missing is if it continues to go down the shit the AFL also wants to wash their hands of it and not get the blowback. While it might not look good for the AFL if Jamarra's life spirals it would look even worse for the AFL if they didn't take a lot of steps before it to try and prevent it form happening.

I completely agree. Understand why they are doing it this way. It’s a bad situation abc I think the guy doesn’t realise what he has got himself into due to being very immature. Sadly I don’t think you’d take a punt on recruiting him due to this. The associations with criminals has really taken things to another level.

It's spiralled very quickly in just over 12-18 months.

He went from being able to earn millions of dollars on a long-term contract where all he had to do is turn up at training, even if this lifestyle meant that he would never reach his theoretical potential as a top-10 player in the league, he would be paid on that possibility, and still earn those millions.

Suddenly that dropped to merely only getting a two-year contract for the Dogs with a wait and see about his life after that.

Suddenly that dropped to maybe another club outside Melbourne will give him a minimum contract to see if he can revive his career, and a pay cut from his guaranteed 2026 money.

Suddenly it's now dropping to now looking like he'll not be an AFL player anywhere next year.

All in the context of mental health and cultural support that is probably greater than any other player in AFL history.

Gives the term "self-destructive" meaning.

Anyway, I don’t think his life is broken. He could walk into the WB tomorrow and offer an apology in front of all the players and coaches. He could say he’d take a pay cut and start from scratch in 2026 and try and revive his career. That would garner a lot of respect for him.

I don't think anyone will disagree with you here, but had the AFL (and to a lesser extent the Dogs), not taken the excessive steps that they have, you would have seen people disagree with you. That's the point.

People will claim that the AFL would have had an obligation to provide mental health and cultural support, and more of it, had the same events unfolded now, but without the support he was given through the year.

We know now that such support has not worked, but without it, we wouldn't have known that, and people might have claimed that it would have worked and blamed the AFL for not providing it.

Of course, the work it's not entirely being a bleeding heart liberal, some of it is of self-interest as well.

Behind all of this is a bloody good footballer, a rightful number 1 draft pick, who last two seasons was rank 8 and rank 4 in the league for total shots on goal (with the other top 10 players almost all being in their late 20s onward). Common sense dictates that less work would have been put in both by the Dogs (for footballing output) and by the AFL (for marketing purposes, the idea that his career output and therefore marketing value is not too dissiimlar to Buddy's is not that ridiculous) if he had shown far less as an AFL player.

There was a month of footy late last year where the Dogs defeated bunch of premiership favourites away from home in low scoring games where Jamarra was basically the only forward on either team that was able to break the game open and win matches. We can still hold onto that, I suppose.

Curious to see what the AFL will do with him as any decision regarding his future (play on, trade, move interstate etc) is completely 100% out of the Dogs hands and has been for some time now.

They have taken complete control over Marra and will dictate what happens with him during the off season.

Surely Footscray are effectively paying him to stay as far away from the club as possible now.

I’d say the largesse concludes this year. Him returning to the club would have been the negotiated last chance and they’ll be free to sack him upon his failure. No point doing it now with a finals campaign on the doorstep, but he’d be done for sure.
