Jukesy's Top 150 Players of All Time

Remove this Banner Ad

I don't think Milne should be anywhere near this list.

Buckley should probably be a but higher. Great effort tho. I wouldn't even know where to start with a list this long

Surely GAJ Jnr is mch too low

Has to be above Cousins, won 2 more flags for starters

All feedback appreciated, obviously will be affected by personal biases (I'm only 20 so can't say I'm blessed with copious amounts of knowledge of pre-2000 players), but I've given it my best shot and done a fair bit of research. Probably a bit harsh on current players who haven't retired also a drawback of this tbh. I haven't allowed any players who's career was predominantly WAFL or SANFL, only VFL and AFL-specific players - so bad luck to many players there who surely would've placed high up the list.

I laughed out loud.

Bont has played 2 good seasons. So that makes him better than dual brownlow medallists? hall of famers? 8 time all-australians?

Talk about being only as good as your last game...

I'll explain my reasons for the top 10 with highlights...
  1. Wayne Carey (NM/ADE) - The King was ominous when atop his throne.
  2. Tony Lockett (SYD) - Plugger put fear into defenders like no other.
  3. Jason Dunstall (HAW) - 'The Chief' was as clinical with his football as he is in the media.
  4. Stephen Silvagni (CAR) - SOS was the only one who could consistently match it with the other four members of my top five.
  5. Gary Ablett Snr. (GEE) - 'God' may have been the most skilled footballer of all time.

6. Anthony Koutofides (CAR) - Kouta was a gladiator of the game, at his best he was untouchable.

7. Gary Ablett Jnr. (GEE/GC) - In full flight little Gaz does things that 0.0001% of footballers can.

8. Jason Akermanis (BL/WB) - The greatest outside player of all time, unless you can name another that can dob them on the reg from 70m on both feet.

9. Michael Voss (BL) - Three-time premiership captain of the greatest team of all time. Enough said.

10. Marcus Bontempelli (WB) - Currently the best player in the game. The most composed footballer I've ever seen and as far as I'm concerned at age 20 can only rise further up this list as time goes on.

How is 1996-2016 "Of all Time" ?? And Winston Abraham gets in?? Bont 13 spots higher than Paul Kelly?? As Damien Hardwick once famously said "There taking the piss aren't they??

As I said earlier I won't be making comments on players I haven't seen.

With all respect to Kelly and despite my love for his grit, determination and leadership, Marcus is a once-in-a-generation talent and is twice the athlete Kel was.

His footy IQ is through the roof, I've never seen anything like it. At his age, the class and polish and ease with which he deals with the game's toughest situations is nothing short of unfathomable. The lad is extremely determined to improve and is playing special football already at 20. He is destined for even further greatness, and he is the reason the Dogs can win the flag this year. The other great playmakers of the comp (Fyfe & Pendlebury types) are already clearly in his shadow, which is scary.

EDIT: And regarding Winston, I threw him in at 101 for a bit of a novelty but he was arguably more talented than any bloke on that list. Serious ability.

Each to their own and all that, but Hird at 29? Behind Bont? Rance? Lloyd? Roughy? Ricciuto? Now I'm by no means a fan of the bloke or what occurred during his tenure at EFC, but as a player he was much better than you're giving him credit for - and its not like you only caught the tail end of his career, you saw him right throughout his peak.

I also think you've gone a bit hard a bit early on Zach Merrett... Big future, but the 54th best player you've seen in the last 20 years already? Better than Pendlebury? Crawford?

Zach Merrett is a robot. A footy robot. Incredible player. Watch him closely next year.

Lloyd won more games off his own boot than Hird did. As did Ricciuto.
Rance has saved more games off his own back than Hird did.
Roughy not playing was the only thing that stopped Fourthorn.
I feel I've explained my reasoning regarding Bontempelli's position on the list fairly thoroughly.

I rated Hird but apart from Anzac Day which was his day, his best performances were few and far between IMO.
When Essendon were on top he reapt the rewards but if the chips are down I'm picking those other 5 guys.
Brad Scott's job on Hird in the 2001 GF IMO revealed a lot about Hird's mentality when the side was losing.
Some may say I'm a harsh marker but I reckon there have been plenty of blokes who were more consistently damaging than Hird.

Would be interested in your reasoning for Gawn over Neitz. :drunk:
The bloke is a beast. 17cm taller than Neitz, no-where near as natural but has a massive influence on games, not just with his elite ruckwork but uses his body in the air and around the ground as well as any ruckman.
Takes big marks, protects his young midfielders and is a natural leader.
Best footy I've seen from any ruckman apart from Dean Cox.
Can't run like Cox but his prescence, physicality and natural attitude / personality are admirable qualities.

Probably a touch high on the list but with NicNat struggling to get on the park, Jacobs on the decline and Goldy not at his best I think he'll be the dominant ruckman in the league for at the least the next couple of years.

Ah, Sorry mate, your like a Justin Beiber fan, you're seeing something that's not quite there. A bit starstruck.

Bont's an ok player atm. He's a bit like Frank Marchesani was after 18 mths (google him).

Paul Kelly was more than "Grit, Determination and Leadership". He was a champion, a great mark, fair, brilliant, tough and uncompromising, and did it consistently for 250 odd games. Plugger Lockett said he was the best player he's ever seen. Bont could maybe carry his bag into the ground, that's where the similarity's end I'm afraid.

Wait 5 years and then tell me Kelly's a better player. Kelly was my hero growing up, he was the reason I started following the Swans. But we're all about to watch Marcus become the best playmaker the game has ever seen.

But you've already rated him higher. Wait 5 years?? That's my point exactly.

You've gone a bit early I'm afraid.

The Bont is an average player at the moment. He's had about 3-4 bog's. Is he better than Carey, Brereton, Voss, Matthews, Barassi, Whitten, Hudson, Lockett, Stewart, Skilton, Bunton, Roos, Pert, Williams, Kerley, Harvey, Ryder, Flower, Greig, Blight, Jesaulenko, Cable, Hodge, McKenna, Tuddenham, Roberts, Wilson, Hart, Knights ?? Don't think so.

10. Marcus Bontempelli (WB) - Currently the best player in the game. The most composed footballer I've ever seen and as far as I'm concerned at age 20 can only rise further up this list as time goes on.

Currently the best player in the game? Do you mean last week or all year?

You are clearly taking the piss.

The Duck just echoed my opinion in tonight's pre-match. Said Bont is better than Dangerfield (Lingy hated it) and Fyfe. Can't get a much more credentialled opinion than his...

Great effort. Would have tried to sneak in Peter Bell for his work at the Kangas and what he did for Freo, probably ahead of Shagger Grant but that's personal preference .

The Duck just echoed my opinion in tonight's pre-match. Said Bont is better than Dangerfield (Lingy hated it) and Fyfe. Can't get a much more credentialled opinion than his...
Yeah. No one can doubt Carey's credibility???

Think we are seeing tonight how far off the mark the Bont is. Finals footy is seeing how far off he is. Has a long, long way to go. Clangered everything he has touched.

Revisiting South Swans' list I think he is struggling with potential versus current performance. Yes, Zach Merrett may be a football robot, and he may turn out to be an absolute great, but he is not - now at least - better than the best of Nathan Buckley and myriad others in his list. Likewise for Bont.

The word you're looking for isn't potential, it's ability.

Why is Merrett not a better player than Buckley when he is a more capable footballer? Bucks may have plenty of runs on the board but Zach has more ability.

I put a high priority on ability when I was making the list.
