Jukesy's Top 150 Players of All Time

The word you're looking for isn't potential, it's ability.

Why is Merrett not a better player than Buckley when he is a more capable footballer? Bucks may have plenty of runs on the board but Zach has more ability.

I put a high priority on ability when I was making the list.
Buckley won a BnF for Port in the SANFL in his second year, the next year he won the AFL rising star. He went on to win 7 All Australians and 6 BnF's, a brownlow and a norm smith. He averaged more than a goal a game as a midfielder. What's that about 'ability'?
And were using the same Wayne Carey who doubted whether Sam Mitchell would get a game at every other club as validation for the Bont? Even the greats can be off the mark, and reactionary.

Then why is Hird so low? He'd be top 3 on ability, behind only SOS and Carey.
Nice to see that you see what we do in Merrett, surprised any neutrals watched us this year.
Also, no Cripps? many rate him higher than Merrett, what separates them?

When the chips were down Hird wasn't always up for the hard grind, he was sometimes but not always. As a captain I thought that was a poor characteristic.

Hird was as good a big game player as they come?

Polish.
Polish??
The only polish Merrett will use is boot polish, to clean the best players boots. He's miles away from the top 300 of all time.
Wouldn't be even close to being able to carry their bags into the rooms.

You young blokes get caught up with a player having 1 good season, champions take years.

And you had Bont near Voss.
As Terry Wallace once said " If you say that again, I'll spew up"

Here's my best team of all time:

B: Harley Davidson Ryder
HB: Kickett Long Twomey
C: Flower Power Mann
HF: Picken Lemmons Allday
F: Herbert Adams Pyman

Ruck/ RR/ Rov: Wood Dick Stretch

I/Change: Black, Brown, Green, White.

Beat that anyone??
You forgot Carey Lade Stevens and Cousins Swallow Cox

All feedback appreciated, obviously will be affected by personal biases (I'm only 20 so can't say I'm blessed with copious amounts of knowledge of pre-2000 players), but I've given it my best shot and done a fair bit of research. Probably a bit harsh on current players who haven't retired also a drawback of this tbh. I haven't allowed any players who's career was predominantly WAFL or SANFL, only VFL and AFL-specific players - so bad luck to many players there who surely would've placed high up the list.

Thought having Swanny in 140 is a Bit low

All this talk of Bont and Merrett has caused the biggest head scratcher to be overlooked. In no plain of existence is Dane Rampe in the top 100 players of the last 20 years.

Not sure what's a bigger crime. Rampe in the top 100 or Rampe being judged within 5 positions of Enright, a player who has a stake in claiming the GOAT for his position.

How is 1996-2016 "Of all Time" ?? And Winston Abraham gets in?? Bont 13 spots higher than Paul Kelly?? As Damien Hardwick once famously said "There taking the piss aren't they??

Negged. Winston Abraham absolutely deserves to be top 100. One of the most freakishly skilled players I have seen. I remember the amazing things he did at Fremantle that didn't make the highlight reel posted earlier as it was only 1998 footage.

Nathan Buckley 11 positions higher than Michael O’Loughlin.

Wut.

I know it's a bit harsh, but I couldn't really justify increasing him over the guys above him (Vallence, Stynes, Mitchell, Mohr, Hodge, Hart, Lee, Brereton, Richardson, Wright, Bradley, Serg Silvagni, Baldock...). But yeah maybe Micky O was a little high by 20 or so spots. It's been over a year maybe it's worth giving my list an update/overhaul :p without footy I sure am bored enough!
