Julie Bishop defends taxpayer funded Grand Final experience

Well that money doesn't come from Julie it comes from a big pool. Did you complain about Daniel Andrews burning a billion dollars.

In fact, did anyone here whinging complain about Dan Andrews burning a Billion dollars?

I'm not saying what he did was right of wrong but at the end of the day it was burnt.

If you didn't you should shut the **** up.
Dan didn't - it was the Libs adding a ridiculous clause into a contract within 36 hours of governmental caretaker period for a piece of infrastructure that failed it's business case argument. Labor had already promised they would scrap it, Libs just handed Lend Lease a billion dollars for kickbacks.

We need an ICAC at all levels of government.

Julie Bishop has defended her taxpayer funded Grand Final experience, saying that her all expenses paid trip was justified.

She stated that the game was a major international event and as a result it was her duty as foreign minister to attend.in other words, it fell well within her parliamentary entitlements.

So she was the only politician there who didnt pay their way?

My favourite was Wayne Swan taking a VIP Airforce jet from Brisbane just for himself and his family, stopping briefly in Sydney, then heading on to Melbourne. Then flying back on his own as well.

Im sure that didnt cost taxpayers much money.

Why would you describe it as 'whinging'?

If she is there justifying her presence at the GF by saying it is promoting the sport as part of Australia's aid programme overseas than the $3500 spent on her attending could have been spent on actual aid.

$3500 could have gone towards footballs or other equipment to overseas aussie rules clubs.

No its not justified. But doesn't really matter. Most people are happy with ridiculous government spending in some areas but not others. Cleaning up all these 5 to 10k jollies here and there won't save that much in the grand scheme of things.
stop 200 politicians going on 3 10k junkets a year and youve just saved 12 million. Realistically its probably a lot mroe considering there are well over 200 politicians in australia.

when you consider that its cuts to schools, hospitals and welfare (ie the poorest and neediest people in society) that pays for these junkets for already very very well paid people, it is a big deal.

The public mob is a strange beast.

We get outraged that politicians get paid too much and have too many benefits

But at the same time we wonder why we can't get any good talent to go into politics.

Which side is Julie on for SSM? Hypocritical if she is in no camp but takes benefits for YESAFL

I dare say there are other issues that concern both the AFL and federal ministers.

Federal government gives millions every year to the AFL, and much more to support the game less directly (stadiums....). That a few pollies (from both parties) get to go to the GF in return is a relatively small price to pay.

How many other AFL games did she attend to "support" the game and the organisation? Or was it just the GF? If she really wanted to support the code why wasn't she part of one of the 8k GWS crowds?

Actually, it was revealed recently that when she was a board member of the Eagles, her official duties conveniently took her to the same city as the Eagles 17 times so she could watch the game. I wish I had her luck.

The Pollies think of us as no more than Goy.

Cattle to be herded and milked dry.

If people think that these people care one iota about them...then they need to reevaluate their critical thinking skills.

I have worked with Local, State, National and Commonwealth Government and NGO's at every level also.

Their whole existence is to think of every which way to screw the low socio economic and eradicate the middle class.

Don't have to wonder at the level of corruption, the level of $ being made off of the back of political connections & about individuals like Bishop who moonlight as politicians while representing their vested interests. Ready the dog whistles to attack the vulnerable & those on welfare to distract from their own rorting & corruption. And you think paying corrupt, degenerate individuals will change this? The system is broken & needs a Federal ICAC.

It's as justified as politicians travelling to Canberra and claiming a travel allowance when staying in a property owned by their other half.

Will it change? No.
