Jumper clash fails

The crux of the discussion is Collingwood doesn’t have a 2nd clash strip as they have never needed it. The only match up they would ever need it for is v Geelong in full home gear, however Geelong has accomodated them all these years by wearing white shorts regardless of being the home team.

This was a neat and simple solution for Collingwood as opposed to designing a 2nd clash strip just for one team. However, current rules dictate Geelong has the right to stop the good will, wear dark shorts as the home team and put the onus on Collingwood to design a 2nd clash strip.

Logic dictates this situation would be the catalyst for the AFL scrapping the archaic “dark shorts = home team” and simply dictating what shorts teams wear on a game by game basis. If a team has a predominately lighter colour guernsey than their opponents then tough luck, they wear white shorts. No doubt there would be an adjustment period with some clubs and fans unhappy, however once clubs and fans stop associating dark shorts with being the home team this whole issue ultimately becomes a moot point. It’s high time to stop letting sentiment override logic, fan enjoyment and the commercial viability of the game.

Ultimately I have little to no faith in the AFL to actually make this happen. Thus, Geelong will most likely keep wearing dark shorts in home fixtures against Collingwood. If that’s the case and the rules don’t change, unfortunately for Collingwood the onus is on them to design a second clash strip, even though it will be worn exclusively against only one team.

The need for clash jumpers could be alleviated in many situations by binning white shorts altogether. For example, if Essendon play Richmond, the away side could wear red shorts (Essendon) or yellow shorts (Richmond). Better yet they could just wear those shorts every time they play each other, without infringing on the integrity of their jumpers.

Why do all this when you can simply swap the colour shorts? As has been done for well over a decade, looks far better and Geelong themselves have been doing for home games for years now.

No one is asking them to wear a different jumper that isn't their home jumper, their home game is being respected. It's not that sacrosanct now to swap the colour of shorts for the sake of the spectator and players.

Because it's a home strip, not a home jumper. The shorts are as much a part of the uniform as what the jumper is, and should be treated as such. Whether the shorts and jumper are different colours shouldn't matter. Away team should have a suitable clash kit for it.

Yep we'll go through the hassle of making up fluro red training jumpers just for this one singular scenario all because they won't wear white shorts, which they have for almost all of their home games the past 5+ seasons and have done so against the Pies for nigh on 2 decades.

If anything, Collingwood is one of the only Big 4 Victorian teams who do consistenty utilise their clash when necessary and get it right. It simply was not neccesary for Friday night given the last 15+ years of precedent.

Show me one game, just one, where Collingwood wore their clash and made the jumper contrast worse.
Now look at when other Victorian teams play one another, such as Richmond vs Carlton R1 and R21, in which no clash is worn by either team when it is far more necessary.

It seems as though there's very few Victorian clubs that cooperate with the use of clash strips and Collingwood is simply not part of that group whether you want to deny reality or not.

Mate, Collingwood's clash strip is excellent at its job. To their credit they actually now wear it against the other big 4 clubs when they are the away side. It's just a pity that those other 3 clubs don't reciprocate when they are the away team.

As asked by others above, find one example where neither of Collingwood's guernseys would work.
