Jumper Clashes

I don't understand why they didnt ask Collingwood to wear white shorts like North Melbourne did the other week against Geelong yet still wear their home jumper.

For the record i believe that if we cud tell who was who for 100 years then no body shud have to wear an alternate jumper. Fine, i get the money and revenue issue, but still the AFL are a bunch if idoits.

It seems to me that there can be sensible compromises made to avoid most of the crap that goes with this issue without alienating supporters by turning teams out in orange hi-vis vests.

Collingwood could wear the black stripes on the white background jumper with white shorts at "home" games against Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne, Richmond to solve the clash issue. This is the jumper we used in various GF's we played against them so I have no issue with it.

North wore white shorts in their home game against Geelong the other week. Why not do the same against Collingwood and we wear the predominantly black strip with white stripes against them?

Essendon and Melbourne need to consider inverting their designs and wearing red shorts to be predominantly red to avoid clashes. Richmond could don a mainly yellow jumper similar to the WA state jumper if needs be.

Yeh, in every one of them I’ve talked facts. But to be picky, those comments are only in Collingwood clash threads. Everyone else can wear whatever they want as long as it isn’t black and white stripes.Define trouble. Yes I am. To quote yourself:
“Now, I'm not blind, not stupid, can recognise the majority of AFL players on the ground by how they move, and was able to work it out without too much drama.”

I am telling you I don’t care about your small piece of meaningless minor dissatisfaction however motivated. I find it astounding that anyone can really have a problem telling the difference between a Carlton and a Collingwood player and you yourself admitted it wasn’t really a problem for you. You are just grandstanding now – or maybe you are just standing up for he blind and stupid?
You can obfuscate it if you like, but you are not arguing from reason, you are arguing from your emotional investment in Collingwood's stripes and 'tradition.'

There is a clash between Carlton and Collingwood. They don't wear the same jumper, but from a distance, they are not so easy to tell apart. To do so requires some effort. If one of Collingwood or Carlton wore a light coloured strip (Collingwood in the jumper they wore for 100 years and white shorts for instance) then they would be easy to tell apart, no effort required.

Yesterday, I had some trouble telling the teams apart. I watch a lot of football, and can recognise most players on the field by the way they move around, hold the ball, and so on. Yet I still found myself straining at times (particularly stoppages) to distinguish the teams. It was not impossible, but I had to strain my eyes a bit. If an effective clash strip was worn, I would not have had this difficulty. I would not have needed to work anything out at all.

Can I make this any clearer to you?

I have repeatedly said I did have a problem with the strips. I did manage to distinguish the teams for the most part, enough to view the game enjoyably. However, if an effective clash strip was worn, there would have been no problem at all. I went to see Brisbane v Bulldogs on Saturday and, in contrast (excuse the pun) to yesterday's game, it was easy to tell the teams apart.

North wore white shorts in their home game against Geelong the other week.

So you would be happy to wear white shorts for your home games? Or did you mean you'll wear the whites for the away games against these teams?

Re: Away Jumpers

I'm over this whole clash jumper debate. Even now the AFL have made every team have one, they still can't get it right.

It didn't matter for 100 years, if the clubs are going to be precious about it, let em do what they want and let god sort em out.

Has anyone ever wondered why no afl clubs wear green. Freo don't count as theirs is barely recognisable. We have colors such as brown, teal and purple but no green? It is such a common color and probably wouldn't clash much yet no team has it as a predominant color, wonder why.
Maybe one of the new teams could wear it.

Clashes with the grass apparently.

First thing that needs to happen, get rid of the white shorts rule.

Second thing that needs to happen, every team must have a light and dark set. Home team choose whether they want to wear light or dark, away team wears the opposite. So for example, North Melbourne at home would choose light, so Collingwood would wear dark, this would put Nth in white guernsey and shorts and Collingwood in all black.

It's the easiest and fairest way.

The soccer example is so stupid, most soccer tops are 1 colour and as stated they could potentially play 100's of different clubs, AFL has just 16 clubs, most jumpers are a combination of dark/light

As for the white jumper idea, how stupid, you can turn over to a game involving on of those stupid clash strips and take a minute to work out who the hell is playing now you have 4 clubs with the same stupid away jumper, if some teams want to lose their identity then so be it, but I know if I want to watch Collingwood we are instantly recognisable by our black and white stripes

But hey for some reason everyone wants to become like soccer, maybe we should reduce the goals and we can have a game as boring as soccer with 2 goals a game considered one of the best games

:thumbsu: that is the way to do it! seems so simple

Hawthorn's 2008 clash strip should never have been approved, because
a) the back is dark brown with a light number which creates more of a clash with teams such as Fremantle
b) their home jumper doesn't clash with any other home strip (except for, at a stretch, West Coast's, as it has a large yellow panel)

The choice of which team wears white shorts should depend on which team contains more white in their jumpers, not on the home/away status of the match.
Some examples:

Geelong v Essendon (regardless of who is home/away): Geelong home strip, white shorts. Ess home strip, black shorts.

St Kilda v Richmond (regardless of who is home/away): St Kilda home strip, white shorts. Richmond home strip, black shorts. White is one of the Saints colours, so why should a club such as Richmond ever have to wear white shorts against them?

This logic already occurs in Sydney games as the Swans wear red shorts in all home and away games (the only time they ever wore white was against Fitzroy) and the opposition wears a non-white colour (black, navy, royal blue etc).

Common sense with choice of shorts (and to a lesser extent, socks) colours goes a long way to solving clashes

The Geelong vs Port game was a joke. Why were Port Adelaide wearing away jumpers or clash jumpers which made them look similar to Geelong from a distance? Why wouldn't they wear their predominantly black jumpers?

Also a joke is why the AFL makes these rules about jumpers, but doesn't do anything about the shorts or socks. eg Why make Carlton wear white shorts versus Collingwood. Why not make Collingwood wear white shorts and Carlton wear navy blue shorts for ALL future game between these two teams.

Do the Magpie fans have a problerm with that?

Besides being Collingwood why have a go at Collingwood. It was our home game, in my opinion the home team should be able to wear whatever jumper they wish (as long as its not ripping off what another club is known for).

Carlton were at fault, yeah we changed a few years back, but that was our right. Carlton have an all white away jumper they should have been made to wear it. Collingwood in predominantly black, Carlton white, no clash.

The home team should only be made to wear white shorts in the case of North v Collingwood or Geelong v Collingwood, when it creates dark v light.

no home team should wear there clash jumper. i dont care if collingwood wants there traditional jumper to be used every week because of the history of it. no team that is playing at home have to wear there clash umper its as simple as that. the away team who has a clash of jumpers should always wear the clash jumper

I have no problem with Collingwood wearing white shorts in all games against certain teams, i.e. Carlton, Essendon and Richmond.

However the same principle should extend to all teams.

Geelong should wear white shorts in all games against Carlton, Bulldogs, Essendon, Hawthorn etc (basically any team that has less white in their jumper than the Cats do)

St Kilda should wear white shorts in all games against Richmond and Essendon

North Melbourne should wear white shorts in most games where they wear their predominantly white jumpers (particularly against Carlton, Bulldogs, Fremantle)

The Collingwood Football Club is the only club with 2 sensible and successful clash jumpers.

We wear Black and White with black socks, shorts as our home strip.

And for 2 games a year (Geelong and Nth), we wear our away strip with white shorts ans socks. Most other away games just White and Black Jumper.

We have not gone to the ridiculous extremes that clubs like Carlton, Hawthorn and Brisbane have, yet we have 2 distinctively different jumpers which with the right shorts/socks combo create no clashes at all.

People laughed at eddie when he said we had 2 jumpers, one black and white, and one white and black, but he was being serious and was correct.

The fact we choose to wear our white jumper when we were the away team v carlton probably says a lot. That even with white shorts, it'd still be to much of a clash. Simpler and more contrasting solution Carlton to wear white when they are the away team.

This sort of talk shows exactly why clash jumpers are a joke.

Every club reckons the other club should be the one to make the effort for some bullshit reason or other.
