Trade ins are more likely to play more games in a number than a draft pick who could bust in a “good” number

Reid pretty much put in an ambit claim on #9 before he was even drafted, there was no chance he wasn't getting it.

I think Richmond is living proof that “saving” numbers or making draftees “work” for numbers is not the way to go.

On the one hand, they’ve effectively heaped more pressure on players (in the future) by trying to avoid putting pressure on them now. They don’t want to give Lalor #4 now but if he gets it next year does that mean he’s definitely going to be the next Dusty in their eyes?

On the other hand, surely there’s enough incentive for players to do their best without the carrot of a low number…

There’s sacred numbers and there’s overthinking it. I’m happy we’ve kept it relatively simple.
