Running what our? Blocking in the forward line?

Players running into other players?

It wasn’t 50m off the ball. You’ve been told this, and shown this umpteen times in this thread.

The ball was kicked to the contest.. finlayson is going for the mark and Ridley was going to contest it.

Question … in a marking contest when the defender engages the forward with a shove in the back, or push or grab…. is that off the ball?

Answer that.
When a player engages with their direct opponent for the ball that's reached them?

No.

If it happens when the ball is 50m away.

Yes. Just like Rioli isn't allowed to whack Ridley in the head off the ball, if a defender grabs the forward off the ball it's also against the rules.

Looking at the different angles that are floating around it appears less intentional and more careless in context. Still support a 2 week suspension for the nature of the impact but do not see, based on the camera angles available to the media, malice.

I would say that even if in a marking contest (which this wasn't), if it's looking like a 1v1 marking contest and a 3rd person comes in with no eyes for the ball, and concusses the opposition player with some sort of action...that's still actually quite bad.

You didn’t answer the question.

Is a shove in the back by a defender in a marking contest before the ball arrives off the ball?

.

It’s as simple as tried to lay a common block, unfortunate accidental contact.

As all port fans have consistently said, afl will lay a ban as contact was made and player left the field.

We’ve just taken issue with the dumb “sniper” “intentional” etc comments

Unless Port get it downgraded from severe impact to high, he's 3 weeks minimum.

So if a shove in a marking contest before the ball gets there is off the ball as you claim…. Why in the history of the sport has it never been called such?

Like not even once?

No ump has ever called it a free for off the ball contact. No commentator has ever referred to it as off the ball contact.

No match review panel has ever referred and dealt with such a thing as off the ball contact.

Because it's paid as a free kick for a push in the back.
It's not hard.

Edit* You are allowed to push in the side, but not when the ball is 50 meters away.
Plenty of those paid.

Nah, they have.

The incident was in the play. Away from the ball, fine, but in play.

Sort of like every marking contest is "off the ball" prior to the ball arriving there.

Can't believe Jordan hasn't apologised yet to Rioli for concussing himself and besmirching Junior's good name.

I don’t think there was any malice from Rioli but it just being an unfortunate impact of a trailing arm isn’t correct.

Rioli has quite clearly swung his arm because his body missed Ridley imo

Probably needed a Bont's eye view to see that.

I've said this before somewhere but if the AFL is to get serious on brain injuries they need to investigate every incident that causes a players head to change direction or stop suddenly.

The fact symptoms of a concussion show up immediately doesn't take into account any symptoms that might occur hours or days after the impact.

They should also suspend players that elbow other players in the head off the ball that causes the concussion.
