Warlpiri wonder

Martin Flanagan | June 18, 2009

Big business is taking place at the MCG tomorrow night, and it's about much more than footy.

THE news that Liam Jurrah had been selected to play his first AFL game reached Yuendumu in the central Australian desert on Wednesday night.

The most pleasing thing about this from a football club perspective is it shows how far we have progressed in player development. I dont think this would have been possible 5 years ago, we were just that far behind other clubs in this field. What a magnificent story for all the football community, the aboriginal people and Liam himself. The effort of the Industrial magpies too is absolutely first class. Well done to all involved. Would be magic if he could take a hanger and kick a couple of freak goals on debut and bring a bit of excitment to our boring, disfunctional, non existent forward half

as to the reports of my nephew liam "jungurrayi" jurrah I am over the moon about him playing his first AFL game and I can guarantee you once he crosses the white line for his first run look up in the sky for u will see me flying back down with dairy cow yelling "jurrahcaaaaaaaane".

I predict Liam will play a great game! As his Aunty, I can say this with no bias but I am so proud of my nephew and know he will make himself and all of his family proud. GO MY NEPHEW!!!!

Yuwai junga unga!

We should hunt that cow instead bunji! Better feed than marlu! Too skinny that kangaroo. We could feed the whole community as Yuendumu watches Liam enter history. And have some leftover for that Napaljarri too :D

Junga, warrpa. I'm getting skinny, you have to look after me, I am LJ's aunty after all!

Can't wait to watch him on the big screen friday night by the camp fires.

It's great to hear about all the support LJ has in Melbourne and back in Yuendumu! Best story of the year and will be jumping on the couch if he manages to bag a goal!

I've just had a thought, with Jetta kicking a bag in the VFL and Bennell expected to return... wouldn't it be great to have Jurrah, Davey, Whelan, Bennell and Jetta all play together to have all the indigenous boys line up this Friday night! (apart from Wona obviously) Pure excitement all over the ground!!!

Great to hear from some Yuendumu locals on the board - the interwebs isn't all about fart jokes and nudity it seems!

For the record, I'm more excited about this debut than I was about Jack Watts' - just get a feeling we're going to see Liam do something really cool on Friday.

I was hoping bailey would have put me in but my nephew beat me once again, when are us old players gonna get a chance to prove ourself,it means I will have to train 2 days a week to improve my performance."UP THE MIGHTY YUENDUMU MAGPIES"

You used to be a champ but you're too old and slow for AFL now Bunji ;) :p. l reckon Liam could jump right over you without even touching :D.

No matter what he does we will be proud :thumbsu:.

You get your chance every weekend to prove how slow and unco you are darren59. We all see you and you don't even compare to LJ..... SORRY.:p

I am supposed to be family and a champion footballer no doubt, but I will start with jalpaljaari first, the wieghts you lift around home liam would lift with his middle finger and for you miss napaljarri low,I recall the last time you watch a game of football you were barracking for the wrong side,so tell me who has the alzhimers disease,it sure isnt me?
