This is from the Newcastle Herald on the 06.05.2006

The Top 10 Newsmakers
1. Andrew Johns (Rugby League)
2. Brant Webb (Trapped Miner)
3. Todd Russell (Trapped Miner)
4. John Howard (Prime Minister)
eq 5. Danny Buderus (Rugby League)
eq 5. Jake Kovco (Deceased serviceman)
6. Johnathon Thurston (Rugby League)
7. Michael Hagan (Rugby League)
8. Peter Costello (Treasurer)
9. Steve Simpson (Rugby League)
eq 10. Kurt Gidley (Rugby League)
eq 10. Karmichael Hunt (Rugby League)

I think that is a fair indication of the position rugby league holds in Newcastle. A player is mentioned more then the Prime Minister, the treasurer, the two trapped miners and Jake Kovco.

There is also a major discussion on whether or not there are more important things then the Knights in Newcastle.

Newcastle, PNG, North QLD.. any more?

I think rugby league obsession in those areas would equal AFL obsession in Victoria, WA and SA.

Have to agree there. The biggest news in melbourne for the past week has been the st.kilda-freo siren fiasco.

I believe that no city or area has more of an obsession with a sport then Newcastle does with rugby league. You are considered an outcast if you don't have a profound interest in rugby league. Its actually quite scary considering all of the great things to do in Newcastle.

I lived in Newcastle for a few years when I was a student.

The bus stops where painted red and blue, the players where plastered on the back of nearly every bus, the media reported about the club everyday and virtually everyone loved the club.

Possibly in Oz.

But for absolute obsession... and enthusiasm... PNG would have to be te most RL mad area around.

townsville would be pretty fanatical about the cowboys and rugby league wouldn't they? probably not as much as newcastle though.

I think Nth Qld would be more into RL than Newcastle because of the fact that over the years the cdowboys have been crap, yet the support has always been there.

But in saying that, both places are hardcore RL.
