About six hours in... and I’m absolutely loving the game... as said above once you get the hang of the grapple system... using that and the parachute to travel around is awesome..
Only just started getting into the missions... spent the first few hours attacking air strips and stealing planes, helicopters, tanks and blowing shit up...
The shooting system is simple... but it works... and its great fun ripping snipers from a building with the grapple...
The story and voice acting are terrible... which is a shame because the game play/graphics deserved better.... But in saying that, it doesn’t really take away from the action...
One of the funnest games I've ever played...

One thinks they pissed away their budget on physical areas of the game like scenery and moving objects and fell back on voice and character development. meh...

Got my first few hours of this out of the way... makes me wish I was better at aiming with a gamepad! I think my recent Mass Effect 2 binging on PC has undone most of my ability to use analog sticks.
Takes a while to get used to it.

You cant beat a pc mouse for FPS or shooting in general though

LOL at this guys reaction when he sees the moon :D

Well, it's time for a bump to this game after it becoming a free title for PS+ subscribers.

I started it up tonight and have put in 2 hours to it so far, having a very good time.

There's a lot of bugs and some weird issues here and there. But for the most part, the game is just so much fun that none of that other stuff even matters.

The main character needs to commit a little harder to the role imo, needs to go all out Scarface voice or not even bother. On Scarface, this is what the game kind of reminds me of, the Scarface game from late PS2 days. There's just something about the feel that has me remembering that game quite a bit. I think there's something about the locale's as well as the main character.

Really looking forward to continuing on and exploring the massive, massive world some more. Especially keen to check out the LOST Island as mentioned earlier in this thread.

But so far, this is yet another big win for PS+ giving out free games that I've always wanted to try but just haven't for one reason or another.

That's another recent reason to play JC2. There's a PC mod out that every few weeks does MP tests. It's not any kind of campaign co-op, more like 50-100 players on the one massive map causing mayhem for the hell of it. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like fun.

It's a great game and for free you really cannot go wrong. Definitely a game that you could play for a couple of hundred hours.

I'm definitely getting my no monies worth out of it. Have put in 8 hours so far for only 8% completion.

There's some issues starting to pop up though now that I'm 8 hours in.

The game is fairly shallow, there's a lot to do, but a lot of it takes little effort to complete a majority of the stuff and is more just going through the motions as you do it. There's not really any mission structure going on, just waves of enemies until you polish them off...and it seems to work out the similar way as well with them coming in specifically engineered ways. I've already had 2 missions that played out the exact same way, I'm wondering if all in that type of mission plays out the same way (it was having to escort the hacker guy, then you get through and take down a chopper to basically 'win' the mission).

I'm also a bit non-plussed about the massive size of the map. It feels like a bit of a chore to explore everything and even though there are some decent and quick means of getting around (whether it's plane, heli or parachute/grapple hooking) there just feels like there is SO MUCH to explore. It's not like a GTA or Saints Row where you can get around to your most liked places really fast, it takes a significant amount of travel to get from A to Z. And if you die or fail something you generally have to start from very far away.

I did however like the LOST island exploration. It's pretty sweet how that's all done.

I'm still enjoying the game, but I think pretty soon it'll become more of a chore. And honestly I don't know if I'll bother finishing the story missions, or I'll just rush through them very fast.

That's how I felt with it HBK619. Didn't finish it as it got very boring. The missions were not exciting.

I enjoyed doing the exploration but that got boring as well.

I think I lasted about 10hrs.

Just finished the main story after 39 hours.

Easily one of my favourite all time games.

The breadth of the island is truly breathtaking and it immerses you in environment.

...just before you blow up a heap of shit. Which is awesome.

I know blowing up government property should get boring, but it just doesnt.

Got the 1st Just Cause today. How does it compare to JC2? Good chance if i enjoy this i'll definitely get the 2nd. Initially i feels like a Far Cry environment that plays a bit more like a GTA. Just my thoughts on it though.

You picked JC1 up didn't you HBK619 ? To be honest, i'm having a tough time getting my way through it. Whilst the missions are ok, the overall gameplay is a frustrating experience, it plays like a poor man's GTA3 or Vice City. Something around that ballpark. I can sympathise that they probably want non-stop action, but it is somewhat infuriating that the police are NEVER off your back. You can't drive down the highway or do any general exploring without having an overhead chopper shooting at you and screeching "Stop! This is the Policia" etc... Even during cut-scene animations for story line quests, you can hear and/or see the Police chopper in the background, they're constantly in your face. It's a huge gripe about this game so far.

I don't know whether or not the game just hasn't held up well after 7 years or it's because i've played much better similar games since. Because around 7 years ago, this could have been an ok game.

Yeah, I did grab it. T'was only 27 cents, hard to pass up!

I certainly wasn't expecting anything outstanding, I had heard about the issues with the game in the past, but 27 cents! It was just a game to have for me, tbh more than anything else as I do have JC2 still installed on the PS3.

As for how the sequel performs after that original. It certainly would seem to be far more competent.

My main gripes with the game were down to it's shallow nature than anything mechanics wise, there's just not a huge amount to do other than blow shit up. Which is fun for around 10 hours, but then it's just much of the same for the rest of the time and so I put it down and haven't picked it up yet.

I think with you coming straight from Far Cry 3 the issues will be even more evident as that game is chock full of variety.

To be honest, when liberating outposts in Far Cry 3 i didn't think there was any variety between them, but the challenge in trying to remain undetected kept it exciting. Just Cause, it is really repetative, pretty much run and gun, which locks on any target in front of you. Sounds like JC2 didn;t progress much, there isn't a lot to do in JC1 and it doesn't really excel at anything as a game, so it might end up being more of the same. As far as i can tell i think you could probably do the main questline in under 10 hours if you just focussed on that. I've spent 9 hours and done 75% of the main story, whilst half of that has been liberating outposts. But for 27c it might be ok if you're bored. lol.... Or want to torture a mate :D

I actually think there was a lot of variety amongst outpost strategy. A lot of this comes down to weaponry and your own inclination. But there is also the fact that all 32 outposts were different lay outs and locations.

One's near water you could pull people into the water before launching an attach. Some had great vantage points for sniping. Throw in random animals which adds to replay value.

I also just set nearby shit on fire and let them burn themselves to death. The fact that they were all different and always fun to play.

Give me one worthwhile thing you can do in GTA that you can't do in Just Cause 2.

What GTA are we talking about here?

IV I spent most of my time dicking around in MP.

As for III, VC and San Andreas, personally all up it wasn't just 'what you can do' it was how everything was done and how it played out.

JC2's mission structure is bland and boring, lacking anything to really differentiate each one from the next. GTA's in the past change this up very well, pacing their different types of missions extremely well. Side missions are as samey as anything else too in JC2.

The story is also non-existent, something that GTA's always did so well and made the world that much better for it. There really is such little incentive to go and do more story missions when you just couldn't give a toss for the story.

The game has plenty of fun mechanics and elements within it that with a game more fleshed out and varied could definitely be absolutely incredible. But being used in a world that doesn't feel like it needs to be explored (as beautiful and vast as it is) and with missions that just feel like re-treads every time, I found myself tiring of the game very fast.

One worthwhile thing I'd say (that isn't in JC2) would be that I had a ****load of fun driving around the trains in San Andreas. Although in light of the recent train crash in Spain, I won't elaborate on why.
