The VFL clubs raided the WAFL the year prior to the Eagles getting a license to be a club in the VFL.
The Eagles got the rest who werent taken by VFL clubs
Then we got a list size 2 thirds the size of vic clubs
Werent allowed into the draft initially, only allowed to take WAFL players - the same WAFL that had 40+ players drafted from it the year before.
We were the only club that had to travel every 2nd week

Was far from gifted, it was far more to do with better talent identification and development, and being an us vs them vibe
Sydney had been traveling every other week for years.

There was plenty of foresight, it was intentional.

I dont believe that they are that stupid, like actually genuinely stupid, like sub 80iq stupid at AFL house
If this was intentional then the AFL wouldn't have tried to implement these new bid matching rules back in late 2023 / early 2024. The only reason this didn't happen earlier was because Carlton complained about potentially missing out on the opportunity to draft the Camporeale twins as F/S picks due to both being considered first round prospects at the time. The conspiracy theory that the AFL only changed the draft rules once the Queensland teams got their players doesn't actually hold up when you look at the facts, but I've come to realise ignoring facts in favour of your own false narrative is a common trait amongst West Coast fans.

The AFL not having a backbone doesnt make what I claimed incorrect
It was intentional, then the AFL was caving to pressure from most clubs, then caved when Carlton and whoever else had a cry that they were going to miss out the next year

Despite what you might think, the AFL isn't capable of forcing talented juniors to come through from certain areas of Australia at specific moments in time to suit their agenda. If they actually had any control over that then they would've done it 10 years ago with the Suns. In reality, it's the same as the F/S rule in the sense that sometimes clubs like the Bulldogs (Darcy, Croft, West), Collingwood (Moore, Daicos), Brisbane (Ashcroftsx2, Fletcher) and now Carlton (Dean, Walker) happen to get lucky with mutiple high end juniors that they have priority access to coming through around the same time. Sometimes that just so happens to coincide with on field success like we saw with the runner up Dogs in 2021 getting priority access to pick 2 Sam Darcy and the premiers Brisbane in 2024 getting access to pick 5 Levi Ashcroft.

The frequency of high end draftee production isn't intentional, it's coincidental. The AFL doesn't have the ability magically create a top 10 pick out of thin air and plonk them in the correct area to service a team that they want to see succeed. You are right in saying the AFL can be very reactionary to criticism and that's why they were originally going to do this back in 2023, but then they realised there might be an even bigger outcry if Carlton were the ones to miss out on a pair of highly rated (at the time) F/S twins. I guarantee you we're going to see more whingeing from Carlton about these new rules affecting them in their pursuit of pick 1 Cody Walker, but I get the feeling it may fall on deaf ears this time because the AFL had warned all clubs that this was likely coming a few years ago when they were first looking to implement it.

In theory, Carlton should have their hands tied just to match the bid on pick 1 Cody Walker this year and that should prevent them from also bringing in a high profile recruit like Butters in the same off season.

Jesus they have such a soft fixture to start the year.

All good, gotta try grow that game etc

The AFL wants its fiancially struggling expansion sides in the top 4/5 of the ladder and attracting members in the first 6 weeks.

Sell hope and cash in.

That is what it is all about people.

A typical Gold Coast mid season implosion would be extra funny this year

No different to The eagles 1992 premiership side mate lol
Doesnt mean sustained premierships. on GF day in 2008 Hawthorn had the following players 25 or younger but fell away for 5 years and had to recruit a bunch of players to fill in holes in key areas

Mitchell
Sewell
Ladson
Hodge
Gillham
Young
Lewis
Roughead
Franklin
Birchall
Ellis
Renouf
Rioli

We got the scraps from the WAFL that the vic sides could plunder first, not quite the same as constant dibs on multiple top selections every year...
I won't deny that. I mean Mark Bairstow was taken by Geelong in late 1986. Had he waited 10 more days , he would of been a west coast eagles player

You guys got only 35 players while the Victorian sides had 50. The irony was the VFL took most of the prime aged wafl talent which forced eagles to choose younger players

Your team only had 7 players that played VFL and had VFL experience. Those 7 blokes had a combined total of 534 VFL games.

Mainly old guys at the end of their careers like Ross Glendinning and John Annear. Then injury prone blokes like Phil Narkle.

I mean Peter Matera was taken at pick 4 in the 1989 draft.
