Just sack Fantasia now

Don't judge him on this years picks just yet. Time will tell how good this batch is.

Having said that I think a change in recruiting manager is well overdue.

the armchair experts are at it again

As opposed to those who give their stamp of approval based on whether they are a spunk or not, with football ability a minor if not an irrelevant factor.

**** is correct though. It's too early to make a call on most of these guys.

However, as an armchair expert, I'm delighted we got Watts with our first round draft pick.

The AFC have gambled with Kreuger and Hudson - and they may be right. Time will tell.

As for the rookie list, the main criticism has to be the selection of that dud from Sturt, Matthew bloody Smith!!

hahahaha - yeah you got me there. Macca23. I just think its a bit unfair to judge anybody when they haven't had the chance to prove themselves.

I only have 2 problems with the rookie draft.

1. There is no way in hell I would have re-drafted Smith. There were far better options available.

2. We should have picked up Adam Grocke

I got nothing against picking up Tim Hazell BUT picking him with our 1st picks seems like a bit of a waste. I really doubt whether any other club would have picked him up.

FWIW, these would have been my selections

Round 1: Adam Grocke
Round 2: Rowan Andrews
Round 3: Tim Hazell
Round 4: Brad Dabrowski

I'm still at a loss why NOBODY including us didn't take Will Gayfer.

Surely there must have been more upside in him than that dud Matthew Smith.

See profile of Gayfer below from Hawkheadquarters.com

"William Gayfer

Details:
Club: Corowa-Rutherglen
DOB: 12 Jul 85 Hgt: 192cm Wgt: 91kg
Position: Centre Half Back
Natural foot: Right

Honours:
Victoria Country 2002
National Draft Camp Invitee 2003

TAC Stats:
2002: 17 games, 15 goals, 13.0 PPG.
2003: 14 games, 14 goals, 16.7 PPG.

Profile:
Billy Gayfer is the youngest of eight brothers, including Mick, the former Collingwood defender.

With the lack of genuine key position talent, he will be keenly sought after you would think. Gayfer's best position is probably centre half back, as he has an excellent ability to read the play, possibly the best of all the talls I saw this year. He is also pushed up to centre half forward at times.

Gayfer was used in defence for Vic Country last year, but unfortunately required a knee arthroscope in the middle of this year and was forced to miss two months, including the carnival.

However, he returned in time for the finals, and along with Mikal Bloom was Murray's best player in their disappointing Grand Final. Gayfer is a true footballer, not an athlete learning the game, and that's what I like about him.

His marking ability is top notch. Extremely strong overhead, with the flight, in contested situations, whatever you want. The other great thing about him is his ability to read the flight. Gayfer is very good at floating across and cutting off attacks with his judgement.

William's decision making for the most part is also very good. He usually hits targets and takes the right options. Occasionally he'll have a brain fade and try a stupid switch of play or the like, but mostly he is pretty good.

I wouldn't say he is super athletic at this stage, but he does work very hard, and even spent some time on the ball in the Grand Final. I wouldn't say he is the complete package - he does drop chest marks and his kicking style is a bit iffy (must run in the family). But he is tall, a good grab, knows what he is doing and therefore will probably be a 1st round selection. "

The rookie draft isn't something I've tended to pay a whole lot of attention to in the past, so I may have this wrong... But I get the feeling that we're not ruthless enough when it comes to rookie list selections.

What I mean is, we only took players who trained with us (apart from Smith but he's hardly an exception). Whereas in the past we've seen other teams take players off us - Port with Patful, Melbourne with Jamar - we haven't really returned the favour by poaching players training at other clubs.

Also, I think this is the second year in a row we've taken a player - Skipworth and Hazell - with our first pick that we probably could have got with our second or third.

So are you saying that we re-drafted Smith cuase he did a bit of training with us????? From what i have seen and heard this guy is a full on hack and has more than enough time to prove himself, I am very disapointed:(

Seriously why does everyone go on about Alan Stewart. Firstly Port have had better draft selections almost every year. And on FiveAA a few wekks back Steven Rowe and Andrew Jarman went through the respective draft picks ffor Crows and Port in the last five years and they were very even. Port by no means had selected the far better choices. It was their trading that got them most of their good recruits not their draft selections.

And it's not like it was a masterstroke by Alan Stewart to pick up Steven Salopek or Troy Chaplin as everyone already knew they had the potential to be good footballers, it's just they fell in Port's lap.

Fantasia would have to be close to the best recruiter that brings good players to the club from late draft picks and pre-season draft picks. It is quite easy to have early draft picks and pick sure talent but the real test is how well you judge the potential of later draft picks and if you have the ability to see that a player will turn out good when other clubs haven't. And Fantasia has been able to do that. It's not his fault we traded away our first round picks for a few years in a row. All he can do is work with what he's got and he has done a reasonable job with the picks he has had compared to Alan Stewart.

it's not a masterstoke selecting these guys until they amount to a hill of beans. then we can start talking about their drafting prowess.
same goes inversely to us.

incidentally i agree port have laid as many eggs as anyone with their drafting.
