Is it true that a person can get sued for the contents of a post?

So if I say that so-and-so from X team uses steroids I can be sued?

I guess this is another example of increasing regulation on the internet.

It is true that if you publish comments that the court deems to be slander then you are in trouble, whether it be printed or on the net. It is not a sign of increasing controls over the Internet, just common sense.

The chances of anyone being sued for a post on this board is minimal as the domain is registered to a US company and served from the US. The person attempting to sue would have to serve the US company with a US court order, then get the IP address used when the message was posted, track it back through the local ISP's logs (another court order) and find which user had been assigned that IP address at the time. If they can find the user (which is unlikely as ISPs usually do not keep logs for more than a few days) they then go through more court proceedings with the individual who made the statement.
But still, it is better to be safe than sorry. Would you want accusations of some sort of professional misconduct (in jest or otherwise) on a message board for all to see?

I really do not worry about what is posted. There are some automatic filters so you can't say f***, as this is an open and public board and I wouldn't want my nieces and nephews to read things like that.

In this case I would have been negligent not to have done anything as another user took offence and pointed the message out.

This is a minor thing and all water under the bridge. It is the first time I have altered a post and hopefully I won't have to do it with any regularity. One altered message in over 2,000 is a pretty good record.

Bluey ,

You forgot the part where they track it to a computer, but then have to prove who was using the computer at the time as well... especially if it was a public terminal somewhere...

Matt,

True. In which case they may decide to go after ME for not effectively ensuring that nothing nughty goes on in the forums.

Legal action is highly unlikely, but people should just make sure they sprinkle a few "alledgedly"s through their posts, and end everything with "of course this is all unproven and I don't believe a word of it."
