Delisted Justin Crow set to depart Dons

It also does not include Daniher in our injuries as he did not make our B&F top 10 last year....a bit of an oversight in their analysis given he didn’t make it because he was injured and was our B&F in 2017.

Add in Daniher and we arrive at a figure of around 44-46 which puts us 4th for most games missed by players in our top 10.

Doubt the club will show interest in Buttifant - He was VERY 'cutting edge' in his time at Collingwood.
A Collingwood premiership player (2010) told me that they were doing very similarly to what we did.

I think it was a touch under 6 years in the current role, he took over from Robinson when he was stood down in 2013 iirc. But your point still stands.

9 years at the club though in various roles to learn his craft is what I should’ve said. Apologies 👍

Anyone heard of his replacement yet? Pretty important decision
Not yet, but I feel sorry for him.

The doc got mesothelioma and hasn’t been around for ages. I assume we have other doctors but Bruce Reid has been here forever and he knows sports medicine like the back of his hand. I think we have another doc and obviously there are specialists and such but it’s obviously a change and not necessarily for the better (not that his condition can be helped- all the best Bruce!)

The fitness boss left in February or something and wasn’t replaced, apparently we could replace Paul Turk from within while he chases his dream of living on the Gold Coast or whatever.

Next thing Justin Crow is on the chopping block. Like really? Scape goat if ever there was one. The issue here is higher up than him in the chain of command.

Get the right people in the right places and we might have a chance.

Perhaps just a genuinely likeable fella in over his head. Not too sure anything was ever really his fault but it certainly seems as if we could have done better.

First recollection of Crow is him Usain Bolting out of defence for the Bendigo Bombers when we were short on players. Handy footballer.

He was a Pies father/son selection. Even managed a single AFL game against us funnily enough

I see things differently.

Club doctors generally don't have any medical degrees that your local gp doesn't have. They aren't in charge of the rehab program and aren't the key decision makers when a player has an injury. Unfortunately for Justin, that person was him.

His method is as follows....

Player has serious injury, dont operate, rest player for (x) amount of weeks, player comes back and does a soft tissue injury, more rest....

Heppel and smith both carried their injuries through preseason last year. Instead of surgery they are rested with a number of other players in the same boat and start the preseason late as apart of there "program." the season starts we are behind the 8 ball and turns out smith needs surgery before the bye after playing injured, heppel misses a bunch of games and the ones he doesn't he plays on one foot.
Fantasia is the same, gets injured, doesn't have surgery, missed games, played underdone and had little impact. Now needs surgery and next preseason is interrupted.
We limped across the line last year because of injury and besides making the finals, this year is the same.
That's without even bringing up joey and his O.P and if he decides to leave it will be due to the club not getting him on the park.

There are 2 other docs at the club outside of Doc Reid. They've been at the club for years and Reid has been succession planning with Sunderland LONG before Doc Reid's health issues. This is a non-issue.

Turk was not the fitness boss, that was Crow, and it is an area we have certainly not excelled in. He'd been there long enough, nothing wrong with this move. Filling this role successfully will be the most important behind Ruttens appointment for mine.

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I know we had at least one but I wasn't sure what capacity they are in at the club, full time, part time, etc.

The club used to have a staff listing on the club website but it's disappeared, as has the article about Paul Turk leaving the club.

From what I can actually find, Turk was officially our 'senior strength and conditioning manager'. Whoever puts the headlines on the articles on the AFL website called him 'fitness boss' in the article about his resignation, but you are correct that "Fitness Boss" wasn't his actual job title.

Without the staff listing I couldn't begin to figure out how big that department actually is or was, or what the heirarchy might look like, but yeah.

So the page disappeared around the start of October last year...

At that point we had:

Football – Physical Performance
Justin Crow - High Performance Manager
David Rundle - Head Physiotherapist
Ashley Lynch - Rehabilitation Physiotherapist
Nick Kane - Physiotherapist
John Mastwyk - Physiotherapist
Brad Holt - Myotherapist Coordinator
Charlie Italia - Senior Trainer
Paul Turk - Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach
Jesse Campisi - Strength Coach
Des O’Sullivan - Development Strength and Conditioning Coach
Codey Moran - Performance Analyst
Charlotte Miller - Nutrition & Food Lead
Polly Gollings - Chef
Daniel Brunning - Chef

Football – Medical
Dr Bruce Reid - Senior Club Doctor
Dr Brendan de Morton - Club Doctor
Dr Pat Sunderland - Club Doctor

If I'm guessing that looks like a couple of sub-departments or offices or whatever under the leadership of Crowy. There's a group of physios under a head physio, a group of strength/conditioning people under Turk, and then a Nutrition & Food group including a couple of chefs under Charlotte Miller. So at least three people most likely reporting directly to Crow, and 14 people overall in the physical performance department.

For whatever reason the medical people aren't considered part of the same thing, even though their diagnoses are now relayed through Crow on the club's website so he must have some sort of working relationship with them (and you'd bloody hope so too, he wouldn't be able to do his job properly otherwise). Doc Reid used to do those injury update videos until the end of 2017 I think? Or maybe mid-2018.

And yes, two other doctors working under Reidy, though this doesn't clarify whether they have three full time doctors on site or whatever. I don't think it's really a full time gig all year round, unless every player is having a thorough medical every single week. I guess we've got VFL, VFLW, and WVFL players to look at as well, so that might take some of their time too.

I remember hearing at some point that Doc Reid was based at the Epworth, although he's obviously got an office at the club and was at all of our games to manage any injuries that cropped up.

Maybe there's an interview out there somewhere about how the medical departments tend to work in different clubs.. I know there are some with the opposition analysts and that sort of thing

There is actually a bit in the Players' CBA about the medical staff, so at least there's a definition and minimum qualification for the job. I spent a bit of time reading that stupid document the other day, it's almost like eating onion... keeps repeating on you. Almost everything I'm seeing on bigfooty atm is reminding me of something I read in there lately. Anyway, this is Annexure C, which is about the medical staff. I can't be stuffed copying the text out and formatting it properly in quote tags, so here are a couple of screenshots instead:

Scrolling down further in the staff list, the VFL and VFLW have their own physios etc. I guess they'd still have use of the club's doctors, but the people who provide allied health services and implement the rehab or management are different.

VFL:
Brady Green - Head Physio
Cam Micallef - High Performance Manager
Sarah Nehme - Strength & Conditioning Coach
Jamon Couch - Rehab Coordinator
Georgie Buckley - Dietician

VFLW:
David Spithill - Head Physio
Tanya Paunovic - Rehab Coordinator

JB and Caro had a bit of a bust up over this stuff a few years back.

Basically the question was why not full time? The doctors are not at all interested in working full time hours, they have their practices and their outside patients etc etc.

Justin Crow is the son of ex Bomber Max Crow, while Olympic gold medallist in rowing Kim Crow is his sister.

And his 1 AFL game was against Freo not us.

The doctors aren't full time, they all have their private interests. 4 of our 5 physios are FT. S&C are FT also.

And going full time with a club would be a massive pay cut and possibly simultaneously make them worse at their job - would cut out a whole lot of learnings :p
