I am curious about the lack of pressure and tackles. We do it... dare I say it... almost West Coast like. JL used to coach there so I don't think this is a coincidence.

They get/got away with it because they had excellent interceptors and a stupidly efficient forwardline that marked everything meaning forward pressure was not essential like it is in most other teams. Our forwardline is nothing compared to theirs at the peak.
Good point, if you have some of the greatest intercept contested marks of the last 20 years and the most efficient forwardline of the last 20 years you can get away with it. I'd think our forwardline is slightly less talented then Eagles when JL was there...

Yeah surely he knows better than most how good they are. It makes me wonder if he is more concerned with getting the structures and tactics right. Then once the familiarity is there you ratchet up the intensity or something?

You look at Sydney and a large part of why they are so good this year is pressure. It was blindingly obvious after the first quarter yesterday. I feel like we could be a lot more competitive just by doing this ourselves.

I have to believe it is a choice not to (hence JL dismissing it in pressers) I am just curious as to the reasons. I am 100% sure we won't win a final without severely lifting our intensity.

Yeah, its my number 1 question I'd ask him if given the chance. I dont like pretending to know more than AFL coaches because I clearly dont but I think this one is blindingly obvious that he'll have to come around at some point.

One positive is that he can definitely imprint significant gameplan changes in the space of a pre-season so I think if he changed it up, we'd see results pretty quick

Freo are in a fork on the road. Do we trade or recruit mature players from other clubs or chase more kids in the draft? Topping up makes the list older.

We've rebuilt with youth over 5 years, many routinely played are still under 20. Gunning for finals, which we are on the cusp of, the kids have the talent but could be boosted with some outsiders with some maturity.

I reckon, we could do with a few old warhorses that are cut from their clubs, e.g. Stevie J as a past example, just a short extension on his career at a new club, for cheap. Gives the team a load of skill and experience and gets us through the next 2 years and transitions the team to it's more mature, future self.

Why do our players allow the opposition to have so much leg rope in the zone?
Hard to tackle when you're 5 metres away from the player receiving the ball.

This as well as what I said.

We’re no where near it a lot of the time and when either the tackle is broken or we allow for the tackled player to get their arms free.

Any of the above and the likely result is the same. We’re relying on a skill error to get the ball back despite barely pressuring the ball carrier.

So this analysis is not pro ross or anti JL but i thought i did a comparison between 2019 and 2021 against top 8 teams.

So in 2019 under ross we played the top 8 in that season 11 times and won 5 games. We had a percentage of 85.56%. So total score of 788-921.

In those 5 wins we beat Geelong and Brisbane at home who finished top 2.

Beat GWS on the road who played the GF that year and Collingwood at MCG coming off a GF loss and played in a prelim final that year.

Other top 8 team we beat was the western bulldogs in Dave mundys 300th in the early part of season.

2 years later we have played the current top 8 in 9 games so far. We have won just 2 with a percentage of 70.11%. With a score of 598-853. We are averaging 5 less points a game and letting in 11 more points a game if you go off the average.

One of those wins was GWS at the start of the year which could change by the end of the season.

So going off that 2 years on from moving Ross we may have become a more attractice team to watch. But our record against top teams is worse.

In 2019 we lost to GC, Carlton, Melbourne who finished bottom 3. Ironically if we had beaten those 3 teams we would have made finals and ross could still be with us.

Anyway that was some analysis and some food for thought for fellow freo fans.

Think the most shocking stat from the weekend was tackles inside 50: 28-2.

Not going to win many games with that level of forward pressure, esp if you're playing with only two talls

Especially when our non-tackling small forwards also specialise in being non-scoring.

Here's an alternate take to all the doom and gloom. We're going to do a Brisbane Lions.

Fagan had two seasons (2017 and 2018) with a young list, coming off a rebuild, cruelled by injuries and they managed 5-17 records in each year.

He progressively addressed key issues in the team over those two years, first defence and then front half connection. Despite this, the team fell away at the end of the 2018 season, losing five of their last six.

Following a successful trade period (IN: Neale, McCarthy, Adams; OUT: Beams) and pre-season where most players were fit they had a cracking season, they jumped into the top half of the eight in 2019, making finals for the first time in ten years. They are now on track for their third consecutive finals series (all potentially top 4 finishes).

JLo has come in as a rookie coach and has to contend with first COVID and then the worst injury hit list in the comp. Despite this (and acknowledging this is an unusual year) we are still in finals contention with four rounds to go - for the first time in six years. We also currently sit higher than the other four teams who brought in a new coach for the start of 2020.

In 2019 we ranked 13th for inside 50s and in 2020 we ranked 17th for inside 50s. We are currently in the top 8 for inside 50s, and were 3rd/4th prior to the last two rounds. In comparison, Brisbane were ranked 17th for inside 50s in 2018 and second in 2019.

We currently rank 6th for clearances, having ranked 15th in each of the previous four seasons. Brisbane climbed from bottom half in this stat, to 9th in 2018 and then second in 2019.

On most metrics we have significantly improved this year compared to the previous 4-5 years. The only stat we are way behind on is tackles - but we have been in the bottom three of the comp for tackles for the last five seasons - so this is not a JLo phenomena. But this is important, in each of their three premiership years, the Tigers have been in the top four for tackles.

How many times this season have we been the dominant team, only to let either the fumbles or kicking inaccuracy give the opposition a way back into the game? In contrast, how many times in the last five years have we been the dominant team in any games?

All of the signs are there that we are going to jump into the eight in 2022, even if we lose Cerra - just as long as we can avoid another run of injuries like this year.

Come on folks - join me on the glass is half full side of life - it's a much happier place to be.

Our forward pressure and ability to lock the ball inside our F50 isn't a new problem.
Chronic is the word we are all looking for. Two chronic weaknesses for the last five years (at least):

F50 turnover/retention caused by poor forward pressure
Retaining possession due to poor field kicking (which isn't just about accuracy but about where we kick and how it takes us to kick)

well at least you are realistic.....

Saying that, freo are not going to trade 2 or 3 experienced players in.

Still..... I hope freo signs cerra for 2 more years. I think we will make finals in 2022 and 2023 if we keep cerra.

We might if we trade Cerra out and use those picks to trade in 1 or 2 players.

Retaining possession due to poor field kicking (which isn't just about accuracy but about where we kick and how it takes us to kick)
which might be a reason we need to use a 1st or 2nd rounder on a 190 cm medium forward that can tackle or a 180-85 cm mid that can play on a forward flank as a defensive forward like matt deboer did

I don't know if Brisvegas fell away at the end of 2018, given they'd only won 1 of their first 13 games? I am a believer it can turn around pretty quickly with cumulative experience though (even if it does look like we're treading water given the fact that since 2017 after round 19 we've won the same or one game less as this year).

It is compounded by our screwing around with the ball when we go inside 50 giving the opposition so many chances to lay tackles.

Banfield who is supposed to pressure got turned around and juked about 5 times (aka Bog Average)

Need Troy Cook to wander down and teach the boys a thing or two about tackling.

But we cant kick

People need to cut Jo-Lo some slack. With all the adversity re injuries and the Wuflu we are still only 1/2 game + percentage out of the 8. With better kicking for goal we would be in it right now.

The overall result is par at best with some very impressive elements and some very concerning elements thrown in.

Ultimately I’m comfortable enough with where it sits currently. We can re-access at the bye next year.

Is anyone else concerned that the two teams and systems that JLo assistant coached under are really struggling with the new rules?

When you go into a workplace do you think that management is always right? You do your job and cultivate your own ideas.

If nothing else, he’s learned how two massive clubs operate.
