You'd think if Kirk was interested in a senior coaching position now he would apply for us considering he's already worked here.

Yeah, at this stage of the process a leak indicating that there is a preferred candidate lacks credibility. The panel hasn't been constituted from the last report, and has limited numbers Limited numbers mean that leaks are really easy to identify, so it makes me doubt it further (it almost comes down to Bell).

There is also no advantage to the club to have a strategic leak about this, again reducing credibility.

Journalists going with gossip, rumour and totally made up stories is the swill we live in on a daily basis.

Hope you can breathe under all that sand Gav.

Peter Sumich has emerged as the leading candidate for the vacant Fremantle coaching position.

The club has wasted no time canvassing a group of contenders to fill the post, and foxfooty.com.au understands Sumich is certain to be sounded out.

Fremantle insiders believe he is the man to beat, marginally ahead of Justin Longmuir.

It’s posts like these where we need two reactions, one for the gif, one for the message...

This is exactly what happened:

Tom Morris gets through to someone at Fremantle after spending 30 minutes ringing the same number.

TM: So is JLo for certain the number one target for the position?
FFC: JLo is currently committed to the Collingwood campaign right now
TM: What about Sumich then?
FFC: I'm sure Sumich will be in consideration

Tom Morris pea-brain translation; Sumich leading candidate.

Lots of love for JLo, seems one side of Perth media want Longy, and the other dark sides pushing for Sumich.🤔

No problem with the club interviewing Sumich.

Big problem if they actually employ him.
As much as I don't want Sumich to be the head coach I think just as important are the 3-4 assistants we have, the good clubs these days have a good stream of intelligent, innovative and capable supportive coaches unlike what we have had the last few years.

Genuine question guys. Why would you not want Sumich as coach? Is it due to his West Coast history? Or more the way he comes across? Or his exit from Freo as an assistant?

Further to this, if anyone goes the "white-anting" argument, can you back it up with sources? I keep seeing this being used as an argument and cant find anything substantial that doesn't seem to originate from a footy forum?

Imagine someone at work came upto you and said;

"Hey remember that lazy and average worker who used to be employed here 4 years ago, the one who went on to not get another job within the industry after we fired him. The one who was unprofessional and brought down our public image and doesn't want to work for anything. Do you think we should bring him back in a higher position based on nothing"

Go figure

I would like him as the development coach/list manager in an assistant position - he has shown he has talent at that and knows all of the WA talent coming through for the next few years. But don't consider he has what it takes as a head coach to take on and battle it out with the top strategic minds of some of the other head coaches in the league, and 15 or so years as an assistant without promotion tells the story (and no recent role as an assistant in the constantly evolving modern game). That's aside from the undermining grubs like Hardie and Hagdorn that have taken every opportunity to run Freo through the mud the past however many years who are pushing for Sumich.

Myself and most of my circle of Freo friends have indicated pretty strongly that they won't be renewing membership if Sumich gets the job. I don't know for certain if they will or won't I only know for certain that my 3 memberships (family) won't be renewed.
Very small sample size I know and I'm not sure what the wider Docker community feels.
I would of thought that post Lyon, now is the time for healing the obvious rifts between the different factions of members and supporters (pro Lyon/ anti Lyon). Appointing Sumich has the potential to just replace one divisive coach with another.

The most obvious and prudent reason is that he is well behind other candidates in terms of recent experience and AFL experience. Add in the other stuff and he may as well declare himself out of the running..

I wasn't aware you guys loathe Hardie and Hackdorn as much as we do :P

I heard many of his coaches addresses when he coached South Fremantle. They were absolutely appalling. He didn’t have it then, can’t see how he’d have it now. Couldn’t articulate simple messages to the playing group, essentially just threatened to drop players because the reserves had won.

I’m personally completely baffled as to how there’s any serious talk of him getting the job at all and I will also not be renewing my two memberships if he does get the job.

What has he actually accomplished to be in the conversation?

Why didn’t your lot want him when you passed over him for Adam Simpson?

Seriously this push from Eagles fans and media to get Sumich on board is just bizarre. I personally don’t have a major issue with him but I just think he’s logically a fair way down the chain from some highly credentialed assistants who are in the AFL system right now, which Sumich hasn’t been part of for years.

Is this the first genuine open search for a coach that we've had since 99? (urrrghhh ... Drum)

My recollection is that Connolly came in as a package with C Schwab, Harvey was pretty much appointed coach in waiting then took over as caretaker, and we all know the Rossy from St Kilda story.

Honestly, if Suma ended up coaching Fremantle, I would be extremely torn. It'd be similar to watching Woosha coach Essendon.

Anyway, thanks for the responses, you've added to my understanding. I'll continue to watch the story with interest.

Alcock's preaching about us becoming an 'elite sporting club' and apparently our leading candidate is a bloke that can't talk, that sooked up deluxe when he didn't get along with his boss and walked out of a job at the highest level to coach 17 year olds, spending his time in the wilderness damaging the brand and reputation of the club he's hoping will employ him.

All of the above and i don't think he is a senior coach material - he would have been picked up by now by someone if he was up to it...

Find to hard to believe the leading players would wear a Sumich appointment. I'm hoping (more than an expectation) that it's just being kept floating to keep the hackdorn / 6PR crew quiet. A definite 'no' straight away would likely turn up the heat.
