If other clubs were keen on him then we had to pony up. It is frustrating we seem to always pay full price however.
So when we lose players we cant get true value because the player nominated a club and is out of contract, however when Hampton nominated us and was out of contract we had to pay full price because AFC.

I guess I just don't think that a second round pick is actually that high a price. I don't see that as major currency.

I dunno. Have a look at what players GWS got rid of and how much they cost, ranked from most to least:

Adam Treloar - 2x 1sts, returning 1x 2nd. 79 games over 4 seasons and certified gun
Tom Boyd - Pick 6 and Griffen. 9 games in 1st season and former pick 1
Dom Tyson - 1st round pick upgrade and pick 20. 13 games over 2 seasons, former pick 3.
Jonathan O'Rourke - Pick 19. 9 games over 2 seasons, former pick 2.
Kristian Jaksch and Mark Whiley - 1st round pick upgrade. Jaksch 7 games in 2 seasons as former pick 12. Whiley 12 games in 3 seasons
Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett - 2nd to 1st pick upgrade. Marchbank 7 games in 2 seasons, former pick 6. Pickett no games, former pick 4
Will Hoskin-Elliot - 2017 2nd. 52 games over 5 seasons. Former pick 4
Jed Lamb, Andrew Phillips, Lachie Plowman and Liam Sumner - Pick 28 and a 1st round pick downgrade. 56 games collectively. Plowman former pick 3.
Jack Hombsch and Jake Neade - Pick 28. Hombsch 9 games in 1 season.
Jack Steele - 2017 2nd. Drafted at pick 24 and played 17 games over first two years.

Curtly Hampton - 2016 second round pick (pick 38). 51 games in 4 seasons.

Sam Frost - 3rd to 2nd pick upgrade. 21 games in 3 seasons
Tomas Bugg - 1st round pick downgrade, plus a 3rd and 4th. 65 games over 4 seasons.
Josh Bruce - Pick 48. 14 games in 2 seasons.
Paul Ahern - Pick 69. Former pick 7, no games played
James Stewart - Pick 77. 18 games over 4 seasons
Sam Darley - Pick 78. 13 games over 2 seasons.
Pat McKenna - 4th round pick upgrade. Former pick 23, no games played
Jonathan Giles - 4th round pick upgrade. 51 games in 3 seasons
Rhys Palmer - Pick 135. 69 games over 5 seasons
Jacob Townsend - Practically free. 28 games over 4 seasons
Cam McCarthy - Practically free (1st round upgrade, giving back a 2nd). 21 games over 3 seasons, former pick 14.

Some clubs got away with steals, such as Frost, Bruce, Giles, Bugg, and the package for Plowman and co. Some trades were about right, like Hombsch, Hoskin-Elliot, Steele. Others were bad, like O'Rourke.

I reckon a 3rd round pick would have sufficed for Hampton, looking at some of the deals done. The only time a club had to cough up actually good picks was when GWS wanted to retain them (Treloar, Boyd, Tyson, O'Rourke, Marchbank, Steele) or if you're s**t Carlton (Jaksch) or you want Hoskin-Ellliot
