Well if Dodoro can manage to negotiate with Brisbane to adjust Daniher's offer well before the FA period started so they got Band 1 and it was lodged on day one, I'd think that's the benchmark we should hold Reid to.

how do you know Brisbane’s offer changed?

A massive opening day of AFL free agency has ended with a massive move as Joe Daniher became a Brisbane Lion.

The Bombers star has finally been able to make the move after the paperwork was lodged by the Lions just before close of business on Friday, with Essendon quickly choosing not to match the offer.

Daniher will now join the preliminary finalists in 2021, with the Bombers set to get a first-round pick in compensation – currently the No. 7 pick.

Bombers list boss Adrian Dodoro was pleased with the result.

“I would like to thank Brisbane for their dealings in recent weeks. We feel we have reached a fair deal,“ he said.

That doesn’t answer the question though?

You see, the key is where he says 'we feel we have reached a fair deal', that's why I put it in a different type of font to the rest of the post.

Why was Dodoro negotiating with Brisbane? To change their deal so the wage appears higher over a shorter period to the AFL, Essendon get Band 1, and don't match.

The thing is that Daniher was happy with a 3 year deal, while Brad doesn't appear to be. Ultimately, if Brad was willing to go for a 3 year deal, we could have secured the same deal as Essendon.

Daniher has triggers for a 4 or 5 year deal. The final 2 years of the deal are likely triggered by him blinking his eyes at any point during the first 3 years of his front-ended contract.

Had we been as proactive as Essendon on this front who knows how we might have ended up. Clearly we were not, and the longer we go without matching the more obvious that point is.

We should go after Adrian Dodoro as we've had his opposite for far too long (not just Reid, he didn't accept that awful Dangerfield deal).

Its hard to respect anyone who gets a position solely based on his dad being mates with the boss.

He brought understanding from outside the club of player values and had done his fair share of negotiating from the opposite side. Gallagher arrived direct from 12 years in banking. People really apply far too much responsibility to the list manager role. There's no doubt that Kelly involved himself, he certainly did publicly. In fact, I can't recall hearing from Reid much at all.

TBF - Gallagher had Gubby Allen and Simon Lethlean in his corner

Point was that after finishing footy he spent 12 years as a banker before being appointed as list manager. Tells you a bit about the role I'd have thought. At least at the saints.
Clearly in his role a large part is managing their player payments. Gubby Allen has been floating around in football admin for years, and Lethlean is a commercial lawyer and came straight from the AFL.

Our LM team seem to be quite short on that level of experience by comparison.

Just seems like large parts of our football admin and football department have been 'winging it' and 'learning as they go' in comparison to other clubs

Which is why Balme would have been great.

This is the AFC

He’s due a contract extension

Or a promotion.

I guess it gives hope to the boot studders and Gatorade carriers. Stick with AFC and with our policy of exclusively promoting from within, one day you'll get to to be Head of Football.

Only if you've served your time as a player or in the SANFL.
