Just wondering what some of you guys think of him as a player and whether you believe he is an important part of your future. There have been rumours that clubs like essendon and st.kilda might be after him to inject pace into their midfields. Is he up for trade? If so, what is he worth?

It is an interesting one. He has been around for 3 seasons now and is yet to cement his spot, yet is something our team really lacks.

I think we should definetely persist with him as the first half of his year was pretty good and looking at teams like Sydney and the Bulldogs they have persisted for many seasons with guys like Gilbee, Cross, O'keefe and Kirk and they have finally become very important players in there team.

i wouldn't trade him... Yeah he's been inconsistent, but he's still young. Plus he's got pace which is something we desperately need. Deserves another season to see if he can step up. To get rid of him now would be shortsighted and would probably come back to haunt us.

Perfect example of Thompson and Lovell's inability to develop young midfielders to the next level.

Hopefully next season that will change.

Must keep. Pies and Bombers will enquire about his services but 07 may just be his break out year. Once the new midfield assistant sees what he brings to the table he'll show what a bargain he was at pick 7 a few years back.

He's a 4th quarter specialist.

In the Saints game, that we won, he blitzed in the last term; kicking the sealing goal and having 10+ touches.

Last quarter of the NAB GF he was good - kicking the ball forward resulting in Moons kicking that cheat's goal.;)

IIRC he was good in the last term against the Swans (KP game).

I guess if he does Sweet FA in the first three quarters of games then he should be do something in the fourth quarters?:D

N.B. - the above mentioned "information" is just my perception. The stats might show I'm full of it. I'm not sure if it is possible to find quarter by quarter stats outside of the newspapers published on the day/days after a game.

2007 is make or break.

I can't see how he could be traded. I think he was a top 10 pick and there's no way we could get that for him this year.

I agree, 2007 is HIS year. We badly need speed, he has it. He is also a bit taller than Burns and therefore would be a better match for the taller wings that we are seeing today.

The only thing that lets him down is his general fitness, he can't get going for long periods, which then reflect badly upon his skills as he is just so stuffed by the time he picks up a disposal.

He would be looking over his shoulder now as Gamble showed how to produce great skills from the wing in the last game.

Not in the real sense of the word though. Alot of that has to do with his inability to play out a full game (general fitness), and the pace at which the game is being played out by then (ie he generally has the fresher legs). Hardly a string to his bow.

As others have alluded to, Kane really needs to get going. For his sake, I hope his pre-season started ahead of team schedule - it's now become an absolute necessity that he hit the gym and work his arse off. Fitness aside, which itself is a big worry, the two other obvious areas in need of substantial improvement are his disposal and the way his footy brain ticks on the field. His form earlier this season (and moreso during the preseason campaign) is some proof that improvement is possible and thereabouts, but to be neither here nor there won't cut it much longer for Kane.

I wasn't being overly complimentary. I think this line in my post could have indicated to you where I was coming from:

Note the: :D and the scathing criticism of his efforts in the first 3 quarters of a game.

It was a fairly tongue-in-cheek post I thought. Implying he has a profound inability to make an impact in a game for 75% of its duration.:)

I probably should have put a :D in the first line.

I actually think he's been a bit stiff at the selection table. He played a few poor games this year - who didn't - but he seems a little like Tim Callan in that he's the first one dropped. To me it wasn't a coincidence our best footy early in the year was when he and Shannon Byrnes were playing. It gives our midfield PACE. Yes he makes disposal errors sometimes but so do every one of our midfielders. I'd have him in our best 22 next year and importantly leave him there. He's got the talent to be a star. Must be given more of a chance.

Completely agree. If I were coach I would tell Tenace and N.Ablett they have a starting position for the first 5 games garanteed if they work hard in the preseason (as an incentive). They need consecutive games where they are not worried about getting dropped and can become a part of the team.

I will rip my hair out if I see these guys get dropped and then promoted every other week like they have done in the past.

Question - Does he still have real pace?

I don't think I see it anymore. I reckon since he has bulked up to AFL-size he has lost a few yards.

Thoughts?

I've heard a couple of times that he ran the 100m in 10.7 - I bet he can't do that now.
