The hunt is on for the brazen bandits who used a sewage truck to suck up gold-rich liquid from a Kalgoorlie mine site.

The liquid waste truck, which was reported stolen last week, was backed up to a dam and filled with gold-bearing concentrate at the Kanowna Belle mine, 630km east of Perth.

The value of the haul is unknown, and police are still searching for the truck which belongs to waste collection contractor SUEZ.

Life-long resident Doug Daws, who managed the Kalgoorlie Gold Refinery in the 1980s, said it was one of the strangest gold heists he had heard of.

"I've never heard of anything like it in my life," he said.

"It shows a certain level of inventiveness and it just goes to show gold has an allure that transcends all classes of society.

"Everyone wants a piece ... even if it doesn't belong to them."

How far can they get in this big butted thing?

Seems unlikely that they'll make a clean getaway.

    Unique approach!

Even if they get away how are they going to sell any gold they collect? It's going to look fairly obvious unless they've got some shady gold dealer on the take as well to shift the product.

If you follow the links in the main article, there is so much thieving going on it has a tone that is almost cultural.

This heist is hilarious imo but think I might have a very dark and warped sense of humour. Or, there's more important things to freak out over.

While there are a few great quotes across the internet .. "Nuggets of a different kind" on ABC-Goldfields-Esperance Facebook Page. Straight out of a comic book or the Peter Schiff comic book scenario ... "at some point, the Gold Stealing Detection Unit will track down the remote headquarters, but they will find it empty except for discarded blueprints of the dam, sketches of the getaway route and a photo of the head of the Gold Stealing Detection Unit with a target over his face.

On a more serious note gold stealing is a serious crime, the value of gold makes it an easy target.

The Gold Stealing Detection Unit since 1907 has always been funded fully or in some part by the Chamber of Mines or equivalent since it commenced. The issue is when gold prices are low there is less funding but more stealing of gold equipment.
