Kane Cornes 50

As a supporter of the club that gave us Terry Domburg, I would just be quiet if I were you.

* The characters in this post are non-fictional.
That was a mere tongue in cheek comment. I like Tim.
I see Terry played for us in 1980, a rather forgettable year, not that I was even around back then to witness that year in footy thankfully!

Is this a projection (S Darcy could be justified) or a retrospective (might explain Danger)?
Looks to be both. Some players are clearly projected and others are clearly on the back of last year.

I would have Bolton in this top 50 especially now he is at Freo.

Alir on the list is strange considering how much he has a go at him with Kingy on SEN. Would of thought that Harry Mckay would of made the list as well.

Tom Green also rather stiff not to make it.

The bloke has been saying for years how our list is the most stacked in the league yet in the last 2 months he has:
  • Two Bulldogs players in the top 50 in the league (one is questionable in Sam Darcy - I think he will be eventually but a bit premature)
  • The most overrated player in the league (Aaron Naughton)
  • Zero players in his most underrated players
I don't understand.

Oh yeah, I wasn't endorsing Cornes whole list or anything.

But there were 10 genuine forwards in the 2024 AA squad of 44 (Treacy wasn't one of them). So let's say there's 11 or 12 in a top 50. Treacy for me was on the outer fringe of that at best. Not certifiably locked in to the point his exclusion was really notable.

If he improves just a bit this year, which he should, then he'll probably sneak in.
Oh, I agree that at present Treacy is not in the top 50. End of season, he may be there.

I was just throwing in that he was at least above Alir for output, and the Maynard one was head scratching.

Someone mentioned this but I totally overlooked it, Tom Green isn’t on the list?
He has been a star and will be a star.

It's pretty hard to select a 50 that doesn't differ from everyone else's 50.

Starting from a position of stating your criteria and the relative values you see in different player characteristics might be helpful.

Is it the best 50 players as at when the last games were played?

Your predicted best 50 this season?

The 50 most valuable if the players were all spilled into a hypothetical draft?

The 50 best careers to date?

The 50 best based on relevant form say over the last 3 seasons?

The 50 most impressive players visually?

The 50 most valuable players for making their team win/improving its performance?

The 50 most likely to play the best when the stakes are highest and/or against the best opposition?

The 50 most likely to dominate a random opponent?

All these criteria would yield different results. People will say they consider all of these things together. But there needs to be some sort of statement as to weightings given to all of these things.

Also, if you are ever contemplating taking your club seriously at any point, remember you had a player actually called Rene Kink. Let that sink in. 😁

Unlike Peter Daicos, his real name had to be changed to Tank O'Donohue for the movies because it was considered too ludicrous even for the big screen in early post modern Australia. Also let that sink in. 😉

Let's be honest, these media guys do these lists to invoke responses and conjecture.

It's got everyone here talking about who they would have differently, and that was the aim.

Kane has a different take in that he is a non Victorian pundit, and the Vic pundits rarely watch a game outside of Vic, and certainly don't value players in interstate clubs the same way.
How many times have you heard the same Vic talking heads saying "if he played for a Victorian team he would be far more heralded"?
So, you will see a bigger group of interstate players on Kane's list than you would on Robbos or Kingys, or Eddie's.

It is a good observation. Vic clubs make up 56% of the competition, but only 48% of the players on his list are there due to their form at Victorian clubs.

I know AFL "journos" are bad but are they really that bad that they don't even watch any interstate games?

ball goes back to the middle a lot, ball movement is crap so your players get tackled and the ball goes up a lot - hope that helps
lol
so you are essentially saying there are more centre ball ups in north games?
and that there are more stoppages in north games

someone fact check this pls

futher, Xerri is the only ruckman in the top 17 players for clearances a game, think thats a sign of a poor ruckman tbh. Get it to the mids who will make an effective clearance.

There's what, 9 games a weekend? I don't know anyone that watches them all.
The same would be true of the media. They would watch their own team and the other games that interest them, most likely not a Adelaide vs Gold Coast game.

It's pretty well accepted that players that play for interstate teams don't get the appreciation they deserve.
I think that Kane pushes their barrows more because he thinks there needs to be more balance in the media.

lol your link doesn't show anything about total stoppages

wonder how he made the AA squad of [emoji640][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]]

Only ruckman in the top [emoji637][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]] for stoppage clearances, that good enough?

Edit: Big o and Grundy there too my bad, neither of them are premiership ruckman and both of them had teams win flags without them sooooo….
