I don't start many threads here( actually this is probably the first) but this kid has well and truly caught my attention. Seems pretty comfortable already and to be honest, has surprised me a little with how well he "fits"

So Im wondering what others think of him so far? Can anyone see him playing round one?

Cant see him playing round 1. For mine there are just to mnay on the edge that are infront of him at this stage. The likes of Houlihan, Browne, Armfield and Grigg are infront of him and they are no certanties for Rd 1. He has shown potential and class, but just doesnt have the body yet to be a regular solid contributor. Later on in the year i can see him playing. I would rather him earn his way in through the Ants.

He'll be touch and go for round one IMO. Has played a number of senior games of footy in WAFL, so playing against the bigger bodies won't be an issue for him. May have a similar issue to Gibbs when he first started, in picking up the tempo of the game. He'll be a ripper for our footy club, don't you worry about that.

Reminds me of Simpson...smooth mover. I hope he has the toughness that Simpson shows

It will be good when Lucas is up and going on one wing and Simpson on the other

wablues own Kane Lucas already plays like a seasoned veteran. I think he is a strong chance for round 1. Has that unmistakable fire in the belly. Like Armfield he is a bloke willing to get his hands dirty in order to get a win

Would have to say no for rnd 1 but seeing as 4 players made their debut last year rnd 1 wouldn't surprise.

IMO if he knuckles down a the bullants and shows his class consistently it wont be to long before he gets a call up for the seniors.

2-3 years ago he prob would get a walk up start but we're finally building something that our magnificent club has lacked for the best part of a decade and that is DEPTH.

Only makes our club stronger having players fight for numerous positions around the ground.

Best of luck for your 200+ game career at the greatest sporting club in the land Kane.

I saw him play yesterday and he should play round one , hes composed and has the skills needed , id play him ahead of some of our 2009 regulars (inconsistant regulars) .. Hes like a 2010 clone of simpson , but with more meat to him... He was one of our better players yesterday...

Can you compare the following of Lucas against Simpson from what you saw yesterday:

1) Overhead marking
2) Turn of speed
3) Disposal accuracy
4) Right foot?

I think Lucas could be more of an inside player than Simmo

Fingers crossed he'll be the steal of the draft. All i can say is it seems like we are giving all our young talent every opportunity to fulfill their 'potential'.

Round one feels like a lifetime away .........

Same. Needs to put some size on obviously.
saying that having a chat to him after the game and he is no Garlett (who was invisible still from side on but we love him so)
His height and bulk is a pretty good combo. Just needs to get the pace of AFL level I think

Busting packs or breaking lines?
Whats his "burst" speed like?

Did anyone see him play at East Fremantle? He's 188cms now, and may get a another couple of centimetres yet.

From what I've seen of him he does have a alright footy brain on his shoulders, and that'll develop further nicely. I'd like to see more of him kicking under pressure though.

I personally would like to see him on the flanks for now rather than spending all his time in the middle so he gets more game time on the ground :thumbsu:

Really?

I didnt think he did much at all. Spent alot of time in the bench. Wouldnt have got over 10 touches in my opinion. How much of the ball did you think he got out of interest?

What type of player are you?

Versatile player who can play all ends of the ground. Hard-working and natural ability to accumulate possessions and read the play.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?

Scott Pendlebury - similar game style - creative work around stoppages, ability to read the play and find the ball.

What are your strengths as a footballer?

Ability to read the play. Ability to accumulate uncontested and contested possessions. Speed and endurance.

Yeah, but those assessments were of himself, so they should be taken with a grain of salt. Its pretty hard to be objective when you're basically being interviewed for a job.

I've done a bit of research into your OP, and you're right... You dont start many threads.

Kane was recruited from East Fremantle where he played 12 senior games in the WAFL during 2009. He is a pacey ball carrier who runs hard and his efforts for WA U18 in 2009 saw him earn All-Australian selection as a medium forward. Lucas' strengths are his awareness and ball winning ability. Kane's Draft Camp results were impressive, with his 20m sprint time of 2.93sec and 14.4 beep test the highlights.

Speaking to Carlton's website Recruiting Manager, Wayne Hughes, said, “We picked Kane for his ball-reading ability in the middle, reading of the play, good use of the ball. He’s smart in traffic and his athletic abilities give him the ability to play midfield rotation. Quick, good agility, good spring, just an all-round good package for us.”

Awesome work, cheers :thumbsu:

14.4 is damn impressive. If he's got zip and staying power like that, then I say chuck him on the wing and get him to play outside as a ball carrier.

$0.02

I also saw Lucas yesterday and was very impressed. He will not look out of place if he makes his debut round 1. He reminds me of Pendlebury.

yeah, baby! :thumbsu:

He was good yesterday, in so far as beeing ready made all he needs is more bulk.

Covers the ground quickly can present as a half forward or run through the middle, has pace but rather than being a ball carrier he tends to weave in and out of contests using his break away pace to setup those around him. (ala Pendle's)

Was under rated on this forum and his stocks fell for whateve reason, proved over the years he could hold his own against the likes of Chris Masten and Tom Scully when up against them.

He won the agility, also was in the top ten for verticle leap and the 3km time trail.

Perhaps it had more to do with other players stocks rising.
Either way, i'm very happy that we were able to snag him at #12 in the draft. Think he'll be a very very good player for the Blues over a number of years.

Just on the comparison with Kade Simpson, does he really have the leg speed of Simpson - I thought he might have been a little slower than Kade.
