He is a seriously quality player with a mountain of upside. Fortunately for the club now, we are in the position where we dont have to throw our first round players into the game for the whole season and expect them to do well. Our depth in quality midfielders/HBF'ers has definitely improved and we can develop him at a slower pace than Murphy, Gibbs and Kreuzer were developed at.

I think that I heard somewhere that the plans at the club is to turn him into a gutrunning winger who will eventually replace Simpson. Simmo, while a fantastic servant for the club and can run all day, doesnt have half the skills of Lucas.

I dont know whether he is a true two sided player, but he definitely isnt the completely one sided player that Simmo is.
I agree with some of that but as long we don't lose him like Grigg with opportunity not their. He has some talent and talent players won't stick around too long if playing seconds.

Their was no wrong in the dropping if he hasn't had much game time and used as sub.His not the player you would have as a sub as he isn't a player that can turn a game or do something straight up.

The boy has some tools, but the coaches concern is that he needs to be much much more cleaner below his knees. Fumbles too much which costs him time and space which then gets him in trouble at times.

The coaches thoughts are that will slot in nicely on the wing come mid to late year as his endurance and speed will be a real weapon as the season goes on and players wear out.
All sounds pretty fair. I believe he'll be a great player for us once he's fully developed.

Oh for gods sake Guns, stop being so territorial.

He's Carlton now. Carlton is in Victoria. Victoria is in Australia.
Something like that..:p

How many times I've told him Harks & he still doesn't get it. :p

Might have to buy guns a GPS !!!

looks like hoops has shown him how to manscape vic style

I've been surprised at times for some of the accolades he has received here for his kicking and execution when it has in fact not been quite up to standard he presents at training.

Has a retention rate of 77% from his kicking which is the second best at the club.

I'm not quite sure what that suggests.
Does that mean he doesn't turn the ball over?

If so that surprises me even for the few games he has played as he does get himself into situations where he loses grasp of where he is and what it is he has to do.

Whichever way, another good performance with The Ants will see him back sooner than later.

Yes it means we keep the ball after he kicks it more than all but one other player at the club. Meaningless pre-season games don't count.

Apart an understandably nervous first half in his debut against Essendon his kicking has been excellent at AFL level.

That is an incredibly brave call to make at this stage of his career.

I'd be happy if he ends up as good as Simpson, let alone a "much better player".

You can list on one hand the number of players in our team who play with as much heart as Simpson does (or courage, for that matter), and Lucas isn't one of them at this stage.

I'm with you on this one. To declare Lucas as going to be better than Simpson in his prime is a very big call. One area where Lucas does have it over Simpson is his ability to use his non-preferred, but apart from that, I haven't really seen anything (yet) to make me rate his future over Simpson's at this point. Simpson isn't a big name guy, but he is an out-and-out star who busts his ass for us every week. If Lucas can be AS GOOD as Simpson, while being able to use his right and left feet, then I will be very happy. If it turns out that you are right and he ends up being better, then I will be f*cking ecstatic.

Lucas will be better than Simpson. How did I go?
Has skills at this stage that Simmo could have only dreamt about at the relative age.

Just a little bit of house-keeping and he'll be in our face, again.
Lucas is with us for the long haul.

I didn't say that Lucas categorically WONT be better than Simpson, but I still think to make that claim AT THIS POINT is a big call. Yes, he will be with us for the long haul, and yes, he has great skills. However, he is still pretty green, and I think it remains to be seen if he can match Simpson in terms of heart and courage, which will go a long way in determining how good Lucas ends up being.

With that said though, I don't want to come off as not liking Lucas. I think the kid is great, and he is very skilled. I just think we should hold off a while before we start declaring him as better than one of our established midfield stars.

4 Grolschs later and I shoot from the hip TNBT. :o

I do have a couple of reservations on Lucas, but it's clear what he can bring to our team.
That other stuff that happens between the ears may be his only boundary, but I can't see that will get in the way of Lucas becoming an A-Grader in the near future.

The sooner he learns to play as a full time on-baller the better.

We need him to play as a classy outside midfielder who can break the lines and hit targets.

I see him as a winger for us. Waiting for Curnow, Judd or Murphy to get the ball out of the ruck in the centre and then stream forward at pace to deliver the ball laces out to one of the forwards :D

Warnock wins the tap, Curnow gets the ball out of the middle, handballs off to Murphy, handballs on to Lucas streaming forward, Lucas puts it lace-out for the leading Henderson, Henderson goes to Waite and Kreuzer at the top of the square, the two bigs provide a contest, ball comes to ground, swooped on by Garlett, goal!

Something like that sound nice?

You're right in that what he CAN do is evident. He has great skills already, and can use both sides of the body as I mentioned before, which is an advantage over Simpson. However, I think the heart, courage, and (as you mentioned) mental aspects of the game will all go a long way to determining whether he turns out better than Simpson. If he can play with Simmo's heart and courage, and can get it together mentally, then I am sure he can be better. I just haven't seen enough to declare that he WILL be better just yet.

Pretty much nail on the head there for me.
At times last year he looked likely to be anything and then somehow meekly went back into his shell, with a large part of that being effort related.
Just working his way through things in a similar way as many other youngsters would be doing so, but god did he look good in the off-season..

I know what you mean. He has shown in patches the form that has so many of us excited about what this kid can become. He just needs to get the mental side of it together, as well as the confidence and toughness to play at this level.

I rate Simpson as our second or third best player. Very underrated player who always busts his gut. Rewind back to 2007 to see how much this guy cared when the team was falling apart around him, nobody else apparently giving a stuff.

Lucas will be good but at this stage I'll err on the side of caution and say he won't better Simpson. Simpson mightn't be the greatest kick (hardly poor) but what he has in spades is heart and courage. More so than just about any other player on our list.

ive noticed he tries to do too much when he has the ball, gets tackled and disposes under pressure,i think for a young player with less than 10 games first option is the best option until he picks up the tempo.the positive is that he backs himself and has the confidence to take the game on
