I am a Carlton fan who rarely gets on Big Footy, so apologies if I'm going over old ground, but just after an update on Kane Lucas. Is he a victim of our improvement this year or has he not developed as quickly as hoped? He was a top ten draft pick with big wraps and I was hoping he would have cemented a spot by now.

Also any news on O'Hailpin? How long is he on sidelines for? We desperastely need a forward who attracts the footy and creates a contest for small forwards to crumb to!!!

sugar was injured and came back to the ants not all that long ago i believe, he is still trying to find his way back to playing some good solid footy, so hopefully he does so for our rotations later on inthe year.

as for carlos, as i was told earlier because i had forgotten, he has been getting over a hand injury of late, but ratts said today in the press that he would resume this week, what that actually means in regard to returning for carlton or the ants this week i dont know.

Lucas was struggling in the VFL before getting injured and now he's out for the season I believe (could be wrong)

O'Hailpin has had an injured hand for the past month and is supposed to be coming back this week.

He's struggling big time at the moment. He has improved in recent weeks in that he has been able to get his hands on the footy but his decision making isn't the greatest.

Not a lost cause by any stretch of the imagination, but needs a solid pre-season or two into him.

Let's roll the dice and bring him in

You can't be serious!!

This is on no way the super-impressive first year player you saw playing last year - in fact the exact opposite is the case. The boy possibly wouldn't recover from what would happen against an outfit like the Pies with his confidence and application already at such a depressing low. :o

wablues own Kane "sugar" Lucas will be back but it looks like this year can be put down as a forgettable non-event. Plenty of other players have had such a hiccup and gone onto have great careers. Keep the faith. He has the size and skills to be a very good player. Needs to get his body right and work on those essential bread and butter skills. Has a great head on his shoulders. He will make it

Watching him play last year prior to his season ending injury against Sydney, you just felt he belonged at AFL level. But this year, who knows what's going on. Could be a shortened preseason, could be guys like Curnow, Duigan and Laidler have taken spots away from him.

I really like Lucas as a player, but he needs to put 2011 behind him, put his head down and his bum up, and have a massive preseason in 2012. Heath Scotland isn't going to go on forever, and that spot is almost his to lose.

Maybe not against the pies, but sometimes you have to take a punt on talent, the boy I saw last year was ready made afl player.

Quite a few posters will disagree with this, but I don't think he's struggling as much as its been made out on this board. Looking at the strapping on his knee I think he's getting used to playing sore for what may be the first time in his career. Because of this I don't think he has 100%confidence in his body to be able to gut run from contest to contest and he's not kicking through the ball like he was last year. Because of the lack of confidence he doesn't look to be running the lines like he was and he's more handball happy because when he does kick the footy, he's kicking floaters due to him not wanting to kick it.

I think the more that he plays, the more confidence he brings out of each performance knowing that he can get through the game. If you look at his performance trends, from the Claremont/Geelong games to the Willy/Sandringham games, he's been performing better. If he wasn't improving and kept performing like he was against Claremont and Geelong, then I would agree that he was struggling.

Dont know. Its not good for a young player to be so injured all the time. Big year next year

He has been injured a couple of times last year with his hamstrings and he has been working a new running technique...

He will have a big year next year I think...

I really don't know where you get that from as there's been no word from the club about changing his running style thankfully.

I don't know about a specific body mechanics dude at all but Kane said over summer they were trying to assist his problem mostly via pilates etc to get the hamstrings to relax. His running was mostly short sprint type work and not distance running which may account for his lack of fitness perhaps. Remembering it was the 1st time he has had hamstring issues and was related to back/hip more than anything. I blame the women of Victioria who have always strained the hamstrings of us sandgropers when we venture east

Exactly, it's always been back related as far as I know which means strengthening and lengthening. Changing his running style would be pointless, time consuming and probably detrimental to him, especially while he's trying to play a contact sport.

It all happened so simply. “I got the ball, was running, and then I got a clip on the ankle from [Paul] Bevan and started to lose balance when I was running,” Lucas said. “All of a sudden I popped the hamstring. Compared to the one I did in round eight, it was a lot more painful.”

And while the High Performance Manager, the club doctor and two physiotherapists have carefully plotted Lucas’s extensive rehabilitation program, the 19 year-old former East Fremantle draftee has offered his own layman’s explanation for the problem, which appears to be back-related.

“I’ve had a recent history of back problems, but we’re going to sort it out so that from next year it won’t happen again,” he said.

I know Judd was taught to change and have shorter choppier steps instead of striding out. I suggested this to kane and he and I agreed that it probably meant thinking too much instead of just concentrating on the pill.

That's for a serious groin injury, not a hammy. Completely agree with the second sentence.
