Swan is a throw it on the boot player, kicks like he's playing Rugby. I admit he does have a clever little short kick but it's not reliable.
 
He's a little smaller than I thought he was, but if he can clean up his disposal a bit Port will have a nice little find on their hands.

Someone needs to get in his ear and tell him there are times where he doesn't need to run at full pace.

Slightly? Please. Swan is one of the elite players in the comp. The only comparison is probably that the two don't have great skills. Mitchell is a good pick up, but shouldn't be mentioned in the sam breathe as Swan.

No, there are more similarities than that. Not in quality but in playstyle.

Swan's biggest strength is his reading of the play and his elite running. He is always in the right spot to find the ball because he figures out where it's going to be and gets there. Over and over again.

Mitchell is similar in that sense.

He runs all day, finds the ball and has dubious disposal. He's the poor man's Dane Swan.

A poor mans Swan yes, but not 'slightly poorer' as was originally quoted, there is a difference. If you know what I mean.
 
i can totally see him becoming a polarising figure at port. he will get a heap of the ball and butcher some of it, and anyone who decides they dont like him will focus on that and vilify him, and anyone that likes him will focus on the other 20 touches he got that were effective.

I think you will find when Swan has a bit of time his kicks are very good and he is fairly reliable in tight spaces with the short kick. It's when he is in a tight contest with no escape that you see him drop away from the elite kicks such as Ablett, Sam Mitchell, Burgoyne in that situation. I think he cops a bit too much flack for this to be honest.
 
He's still a hack. If he makes a senior spot, the Port Adelaide list is in bigger shambles than I thought...

I dunno about hack but someone who has huge disposal issues at WAFL will look 10x worse at AFL level where the pressure is 10 times greater.

I don't wish Mitchell any ill will and I hope Port can get some use out of him but I literally cannot envisage him succeeding. Compounding it is the fact he's so small, if he was 10cm taller he could probably forge a career as a tagger in the Clint Jones mould because he is a terrific athlete.

If Port are serious about returning to finals footy Mitchell won't be in their long-term plans.

I should pay more attention to the collective genius of BF.
 
I wouldn't say Kane is a hack. Rough way to describe him. Going to be a good solid role player for port.

What are you talking about? Sour grapes? Were people jealous of him when he was playing WAFL? Because his criticisms two years ago are basically the same as they are now. People who watched him for Claremont said he was ineffective with the ball. He racked up possessions because of his elite endurance, but he's a liability with his kicking and decision making. If that was highlighted at state level, how is that going to be seen in the AFL?

And everything is relative. A shit AFL footballer is probably a very good WAFL/SANFL/VFL player, and a great to outstanding suburban player. Kane Mitchell just isn't at the necessary level.

The thing is, his flaws could've been ironed out. Poor skills can be honed. Especially in a pretty decent environment – don't forget that Claremont are one of the best sides outside the AFL. If it was his endurance, tackling, or something more physical than... yeah... but he doesn't have a footy brain (ie, as someone else said, sprinting when he doesn't have to) and you really can't teach that at this stage.

I'm indifferent toward Port. It's not like that at all. But he just doesn't seem good enough. If he was going to St Kilda or the Bulldogs, clubs on the decline who need some experience with the kids, you'd understand. But Port have some aspirations to be playing finals soon.
 
Silent Alarm I was responding to the post by sTeeL who has posted in this thread a handful of times. Check his contributions.

I don't know if Mitchell will make it, but to call him a hack seems a bit rich to me. His achievements in footy to date are not hack-like.

As to your last point, I think he's a great fit for Port. I have them in the same basket as the Bulldogs (developing young talent for a tilt in 3 or 4 years). The Saints clearly think they can play finals again soon.
 
I am don't know him personally but I have seen him extensively in the WAFL. Disposal issues is an understatement. He regularly just kicks it forward without looking and his long kicks aren't even that long. When he does try and hit a target, it usually a shank or floater of some description. In the pinpointv precision of AFL, he had no place. Won the Sandover due to elite endurance in a dominant team.

His playing skill should be offensive to all football supporters and I am sure it would take a miracle to fix his issues at 23. He's been kicking a footy for probably 15 years. Not many dramatically improve their kicking even after entering the system as draftees let alone mature age

To those that have seen him play, do you think he is capable of playing a high energy small forward/pitch hit in midfield role?
 
His only attribute is the elite endurance. He isnt oarticularly creative by hand or foot and speed is only average (maybe slightly above) so I would think pure mid or not at all

Elite endurance can still be used for forward line pressure. We arent exactly blessed with small forward options (fingers crossed for Neade), perhaps given a job on opposition creative halfbacks?
