I was pretty disgusted by this

Australia exports over 3 million kangaroo skins, worth more than £12 million, to Europe and the USA every year. The vast majority of these skins are used to make football boots, including Adidas Predator and Umbro XA1, which are sold around the world. Kangaroo leather is also used for golf gloves and baseball mitts. Products are often labelled as "K leather" or "RKT" (rubberised kangaroo technology) to cloud the fact that they are made from the skins of butchered kangaroos.

The Australian government has increased the number of kangaroos which can be legally killed this year to 7 MILLION! This does not include joeys (baby kangaroos) who are also killed when their mothers are shot, so-called ‘pest’ control by farmers and the unknown number of illegal kills. The real death toll could be millions more. A massacre of this magnitude could wipe out these beautiful animals in a matter of years.

I'm writing to Adidas Australia to help stop this madness if anyone else is interested please use this address you can get a sample letter from :

Our coat of arms has a Kangaroo & an Emu, they are national emblems, what the hell are we doing eating them, do you see Americans eating Eagles, the reason they are a problem now, is because farmers came in & wiped out their territory, we have to make room for them as much as we do for the farmers, stop farmers raping the land & giving nothing back.

At least were not using human skins to make boots. If these people got their way, we would all be walking around naked.

Stupid comment! When did it become a crime to actually care about the environment? You Sir, need to get an idea.

Mantis, you need to do some research into the damage that the previously uncontrolled kangaroo growth is now doing to Australias biodiversity (not only to farms). Your argument (it seems) is based on opinion and only a little fact, and as for that simplistic argument about Americans not eating the Bald Eagle. Well, they may not eat them but they sure as hell hunted them to near extinction for sport....plus everyone knows that Eagle is awful to eat.
Bluey is correct (another first ;)) when he suggests that there are more Kangaroos here now than when Europeans first invaded.
I worry more about Australia's complete environmental biodiversity.

I think the big question here is that of cruelty to these magnificent animals obviously the federal government will not put a stop to the killings but they do have legislations in place for humane killing of these kangaroos which are not adhered by a lot of these licensed shooters.

I mean how can justify trampling or beating a joey to death after you've already killed the mother. I think that is just barbaric:mad:

There are plenty of kangaroos, anyone who says they're nearing extinction obviously has never lived out in the country. Culls are a necessary part of controlling the population - would it be preferable if the meat and skin were piled into a stinking heap and burnt instead?

Fully agree with you there PP. As long as these Kangaroos are killed in a humane manner, I'll accept it.

I may be a vego, but I reckon shoot the buggers. They've run rampant since we (read Europeans) have upset the ecological balance on this continent. I'd only be opposed if they were endangered and there is no chance of that, they can't be shot quick enough to put the roo population at risk.

May as well use the leather for something useful.

What do you suggest we use to replace leather? Where do you think synthetic materials come from? Ahh that's right.. petrochemicals. Like the planet needs more of that.

Kangaroos and Emus aren't endangered species or rare.

I have no problem with export roo skin. I eat meat. I wear leather shoes. No difference, except our country is benefiting.

I'm amazed at your naivety. Have you not realised that you are the odd man out? Whether you think you are right or wrong doesn't matter, the facts are that only the smallest minroity share the same views as you.

I guess we need people like you so the rest of us have something to laugh about.

A question for Mr Fugitive:

I would assume that you are a vegetarian, but do you also abstain from using leather goods and other animal products?

Is shearing sheep okay, or is that cruelty as well?

What about eggs? Should there be a lawsuit against humans on behalf of all chickens because we have stolen their eggs? And if so, what would you think a reasonable compensation package would be in monetary terms?
