There is no inside info here just a fair summary of where we are at. There is so much crap flying aorund at the moment, particuarly from opposition supporters (you know who you are Port supporters, obviously have been drinking too much Adelaide water)

Hay

Why we wnat him? We need a fullback, ever since Martyn retired this position has been our achilles heel. Watt and Brown are no good and this is one of the main reasons we are a mediocre side. Drafting a FB is very very hard. None of the best junior footballers play FB, so you need to convert a forward. At the moment there are only a handful of top fullbacks (Scarlett, Michael, Rutten, Glass) the rest are dour battlers (Presti, Wakelins etc.) Also Key position players take much longer to develop and we need a full back now. Plus he is a former All Australian and only 26. If we get him playing somewhere near his best, we become a MUCH better side. (which is the name of the game)

What we will pay for him?

The Kangaroos are not stupid, they will not give up two first round picks because it is simply ridiculous. Also given no other club will pay close to that so we don't need to. At the start of the week clubs ask for their top price and then it gets to Friday and they realise they are dreaming and then hopefully a fair price is paid. The only thing that worries me is getting into a bidding war which can be dangerous

What will happen?

If we don't get pick 9 from the Lions and Fremantle are willing to give pick 10 then we will miss out, unless another multiple club trade can be arranged.

Motlop

He could be the worst player to trade, he is a top 10 pick, 23 and on the cusp of being a super player. In the preseason cup this year he was unstoppable. We have done all the hard yards with him, but he has yet to fully show his ability. Ideally he would have been fit this year, kicked 50 goals and we could get two first round picks for him.

If Adelaide can get pick 17 for Fergus Watts and Hawthorn pick 10 for Hay then Motlop is clearly worth more than pick 10. And can opposition supporters (once again the halfwits from Port Adelaide) stop saying they don't rate him when they have never seen him play.

After the way he Motlop has carried on this week, we should get the deal or force him into the PSD where he will defintely not end up at a club of his choice. Making a stand against being shafted is worth losing him for, particuarly considering he has done us no favours.

Pick 9 plus Notting is a brilliant deal, we badly need Notting cos he does something no on e at the club does, everytime he gets the ball he runs straight and then kicks the ball 60m accurately. Which is better than the sideways, missing target crap we are so good at.

Rawlings

If we give up anything for this guy, we are kidding ourselves. He would not be in our best 22, he couldn't make the Dogs side and they have no talls. COnsidering how many examples there are of late draft picks becoming good players, it is worth taking a punt that we luck out with our 4th round pick than picking up a washed up hack, who would not improve our team at all.

McConnell

If he was so ggod, West Coast would not let him go. They know him better than anyone else and if he was a budding superstar they would not trade him. Also allegedly he has no pace and his kicking is erractive, we have those two qualities in abundance. He obviously has some ability given the amount of interest but only at the right price. To trade pick 13 for him and pick 18 is a terrible trade it is better taking a punt in the draft.

The other guy who would dramatically improve our team next year, is Campo. For the right price he would be ideal. At the Kangaroos he would never be tagged which he can't handle, but what he can do is get the footy, still got some pace and most importantly he is one of the best kicks in the AFL. I don;t think we will bother but he would be a good fit.

This is my ideal result from trade week

Lose
Motlop
Pick 9

Gain
Hay
keep pick 13
Notting

Don't get caught up in the rubbish that is mentioned during trade week, particuarly around here. If everyone here thinks it would be a bad idea, then there is a fair chance so do the Kangaroos

Player worth is a very subjective thing, it is partly irrelevant where they were picked up. What is important is age, experience and ability and more importantly, how many clubs are after the player.

You could put Judd on the market and comparatively he would be worth 6 first round picks at least. But if nobody can get 6 first round picks then he is not worth 6, because nobody can do that trade. If Judd was out of contract and said he wanted to go back to Victoria then Eagles would have to accept a deal that was feasible or get nothing. That would be which club is prepared to pay the most.

Motlop was drafted 8th, he had talent as a young kid and he is quite young and about to hit his prime years.

He would have a bare minimum of two first round picks (outside top 10) or equivalent, what is preventing that kind of trade is his refusal to accept a trade outside of Port.

Port's strategy is to give the bare minimum but above what is the threshold level, that is where the club is tempted to dump the player in the PSD.

St Kilda played it well with Watts, 17 for an unknown kid who hadn't really done anything and couldn't crack into the senior squad this year but had potential to be a good player. Crows wanted more but what they offered was above the threshold. Crows would have been silly to PSD him to get marginally more.

I think where Port has got it wrong is they are below the threshold and not even remotely close to what others seem to be prepared to offer. That makes it interesting. Someone has to crack under pressure.

Port would be stupid to lose a player of his quality where with a bit more they could probably crawl over the threshold. 1st and 2nd could be enough, a lot depends on if Hawks would bite at that in exchange for Hay.

North would be silly to get nothing out of Motlop but there comes a point to where you do not want to give away talent to your direct competitors for nothing. Carlton is not our direct competition, Port is.

Port made the same judgement that what Collingwood offered for Stevens was worth less than having Stevens shoved off to Carlton. North will probably be doing the numbers and could come to the same decision because their offer is not going to help North get the trade they are after with Hawthorn.

Motlop has said its Port or it's nothing, playing hardball is good and all but the more 'nothing' looms as your likely proposition from your football career then players often are not prepared to flush their career down the toilet. He will have to sit down and think, is Port worth risking everything for. Would I want to spend the next two years at Carlton or at Brisbane. Hardball gets a lot harder when the realisation is that you are heading for the spooners.

It really can go any way, it is a bit exciting mixed in with frustrating. I can't wait for it to be over but I am guessing there may be a few dramas before this week is over.

Now I know why i come here to read up on the roos...level headed opinions & the voice of reason.....thanks guys.

The only thing I would like to add is my thoughts on Daniel Motlop. He is as we know a highly talented footballer but if the boot was on the other foot would we be questioning the worth of a guy who has had ongoing injury problems - shoulder & hamstring & who seems to be a bit off track as far as attitude & application goes?

Shoulder is fixed. Hamstrings occurred as he was pushing himself too hard to get back. Prior to this he hasn't had a lot of soft tissues in the prior two years. His 3rd and 4th season (03,04) were virtually injury free barring the shoulder and he has improved, at time drastically, in that period.
