Any league watchers here give me some background on Hunt and Folau?

Were they actually any good players? Who would they be the equivalent of in the AFL in terms of league?

And what were their salaries beforehand?

cheers

Not a fan but hang around a rugby household... apparently Izzy Folau was one of the best at the time.

On a side note, have the commentators/Anthony Hudson been told to say Hunt's full name.

"..to Karmichael Hunt.."
"Karmichael Hunt now.."
"Karmichael Hunt again!"
"...oh Karmichael Hunt!"

Every other player... last name basis.

Both were international and bloody good players in Rugby League. Izzy is a more of an athlete but tends to be lazy and lack a bit of mongrel. Hunt has the attitude and work ethic to succeed at any sport IMO. Izzy potentially could have become a great of the game in League. Hunt was earmarked as a future captain at the Broncos

I'll admit I hated Karmichael's inclusion into the game - I saw it as a publicity stunt and would stall the development of players who've been playing this game their whole lives.

This year, though, he's proven he actually wants to play AFL and will do anything to achieve it... just like anyone else.

I guess he was just bored with NRL.

I think the main difference between Hunt and Folau is that Hunt actually played some football at school, in fact I think Mark Browning rated him very highly as a 15 or 16 year old. I'm fairly sure Folau had never played before. I'm pretty confident that Hunt will become a pretty useful player, jury is still out on Folau.

They said he played 5 games in high school, lets be honest that's a little bit of a start but really you could make up what's learned from high school footy in one intraclub.

Karmichael Hunt was the equiv of Joel Selwood, came in and busted his first year apart, won the Dally M Rookie of the Year and was an elite player.
Folau was Buddy Franklin at age 20.

The main difference is one of them has been playing the game a year longer.

People are saying the same things about Izzy this year that they were about Hunt last.

If Izzy was a first year kid that had been drafted everyone would be calling him a future superstar. People have massively unrealistic expectations of the league guys first year in.

Yup! nobody else entered my mind, I for some reason always sit there and think of NRL and AFL equivs, no idea why.
Yeah yeah, you beat me ;)

Hmm, so your both saying they were top ten players?

I dont understand why they would leave, surely they were young and their salaries were set to rise.

Or is the NRL salary cap lower?

They have smaller lists as well but yeah.

They would be earning now at least twice what they could have earned in league.

Difference in salary was over 500k a year maybe even more. Plus both players had done everything in league at a young age.

Elite players at champion clubs who had pretty much done it all at a very young age.

Izzy debuted at 17, in that year he broke the NRL record for the most points in a debut season, won the premiership and represented Australia internationally.

Kinda like younger versions of Gazza. Nothing left to achieve.

...Also the dollars are absolutely massive...

Karmichael has been BOG till half time in the NM v GC game wonder if this will make the nay sayers eat their words.

He has been in everything so far today really picked up the slack with Ablett and Rischa not playing an has got the Coasters into a half time lead:thumbsu:

Some of his hits today have been awesome - all legit too - he's an axe. He fumbled once that I saw but in general his ball handling and skill in traffic has improved out of sight.

That hit he got Monfries with in the Essendon game was sick - the bloke he dropped today with the hip and shoulder was right up there too. He's basically their midfield enforcer and will no doubt have players from other clubs treading lightly when he's in the vicinity.

Edit: he's basically the player the Suns thought they were getting with Campbell-Brown x 5.

Has really rattled the North midfield. Loving his hard hits and contested ball work. Obviously his field kicking is a little iffy, but hard not to like what we are seeing!
