No it wasn't. A cult absolutely was, and they all start out that way. Religion is when the cult has created a mutually beneficial relationship with the culture they are growing into like a vine. The cults that have survived into religions have all adapted to service their population, they have all offered something to them in a practical sense because that is how they differentiated themselves from the thousands of other faiths that have existed in history.

I'll give you an example. In a era of humanity when we have moved out of hunting and gathering for our immediate family into a larger community requiring organised mass human labour there was risks of literally working the population to death. The Abrahamic religions come with a day off. That day is spent primarily in worship and prayer but the social benefit is not simply that, it's the rest day.
