Why wouldn't you let a club have an opportunity to prove itself? Longwood sits in or on the geographical boundaries of the KDFL. Small towns need their footy clubs. With the demise of the BDFL it's only logical home is the KDFL.

If you are worried about a 13 team comp, I know that the SE PDFL would like another team to join its ranks!

As for the 3rds/Netball issue, have the KDFL have taken a harsh stance on this with Ardmona & Merrigum over the years?
That's a fair point... But my question to you is, where are Longwood going to get their footballers from?

What would Longwood bring to the competition?

Whilst there are obvious concerns with their competitiveness at senior level, my biggest concern would be their impact on the junior comps.

Longwood is at best unlikely to field any junior sides in the football and netball comp next year, meaning the league will struggle to punish other clubs who also fail to provide junior comps. The more sides that don't get a junior sides, the more byes in the comp at these levels. I imagine it would be very difficult to attract juniors to stronger clubs, such as your Stanhopes or Lancasters, when they're faced with the prospect of only playing 10 or 12 games a year. This will obviously further weaken the comp. This is a cycle we do not want to be in.

Look at clubs who are successful and how many of their players come up through the junior system. A huge number of Nagambie's players, particularly the younger ones, played juniors at the club.

It's the VCFL's problem, not ours. I don't get any joy out of seeing a club struggle, but the only thing that'll happen if they get put in this sink of swim scenario is that they'll sink and hurt our comp in the process.

It would seem to me what needs to happen is that they need to try and add more clubs to BDFL, rather than disband it.

I ventured up the hume on Saturday for the first time in a few months and saw a great game of footy. Just a few observations from the day though:

1. Well done to Undera - never gave in and ran the game out well
2. They had plenty of help from the umpires - one in particular. Cosby is spot on with the centre bounce infringements - where was he plucking them from? It seemed like he was doing everything in his power to get the Lions across the line - free kick count was 33-18 for the day and 9-3 in the last term the Lions way, but don't want to take anything away from them - you still have to be in a position to win it and they were.
Although they did have the rub of the green, Undera, they did deserve to win and I'm glad that the two best sides all season have made it
3. The goal Godsmark kicked from the boundary line was from a mark taken two feet through the points, and snatched out of his teammates arms - there's no way that was a mark, but he finished off the goal nicely to seal it.
4. Murch needs to improve their changeroom facilities if they're fair dinkum about ever hosting a GF again We have already drawn up plans for extensions to the rooms, and we have the money to do it, if we get some dollar for dollar grants, but because our district is in a government funding vortex, this could be a long time coming, and get someone with some maths skills to run their scoreboard (the old one) How many grounds have two scoreboards BTW ?, and although the 3rds did it, the only fault I had with them is that they didn't put the scores up quickly enough, but everything else went well, there was plenty of toilets, food & drink stalls, and we had no trouble because of the temp. fencing we had to prevent people bringing in grog, so basically, if that's the only thing you can fault with us last Saturday, then you're just being petty

And another thing, going by the sour tone of your post, I will assume that you are a Lancaster supporter, and O.K our rooms are ordinary, but that gives you absolutely no excuse for treating our facilities like your own personal pig sty, you wouldn't pull that sort of stunt during the season, why do it during the finals ?
5. Lancaster should never have played Eddy - didn't see out the first half and on a hot day you need 21 fit players - nto worth the gamble. He kicked two but would they have got more out a fit player in 4 quarters?
The problem with toss of the coin prospects like him is that 50% of the time, your luck runs out, but they were valiant in defeat
6. LaPorta is a gun - great grab and goal after being well held all day to put the Lions in front.
I hope that someone, somewhere took either a photo or had his mark on film, because that was a clutch mark, at a vital time
7. Where was Undera's Chapman, Campbell and Pell? Are they all injured or what becuase surely they're all in the best 21.

I can't say, but even with a fully fit side, I can't see Undera beating Nagambie, but with that being said, it will be a close game and there will be less than 3 goals in it either way

Now for some real fun. Which precious clubs decided that they are bigger than the game and voted NOT to give Longwood a shot at the KDFL? Is it better that we have more people disappear from the game and another small town lose its lifeblood? Anyone who has noticed the development on the northern fringe of Melbourne will realise that it's coming Seymour's way in the not so distant future, especially with the Craigieburn Bypass. Maybe if travel is the issue these clubs can join the GVFL or MFL, it might match their ego!

That is disappointing, because going to Longwood is no worse than going to Violet Town or Avenel, and they have a lovely pub there and it's a nice drive.

Basically, the club needs a home and we're the only ones who can accommodate them, but, I'm glad that they're in and I wish the Redlegs the best of luck in 2010.

I think the vcfl have told them that thay dont have to field a 3rds side this year if they cant, but must the following year.

Once Lonwood joins the kdfl this will mean every club has to have 2 byes during the season. What would the clubs think of that?
Would any other side be willing to join the comp to make it 14 clubs to eliminate the byes in the next couple of years.

I know when we (wallan) rejoined the rdfl 2 yrs ago a few clubs didnt like the idea of having byes and only playing the 16 games. Then broadford came in this year which has now got rid of the bye to make it a 12 team league.

Lancaster, Undera, Tally, Avenal & Nagambie. The vote would have gotten through if Rushworth's votes had been accepted. 7/5ths majority required and fell short. Longwood now have to appeal to the VCFL so in the end it will be a done deal anyway.

Why was Rushworths vote not accepted?

It is about time we had a look at this weeks games,

My tips are,

Nagambie by under 2 goals in the 1's. Both very good sides but Nagambie to run the game out a bit better because of the week off.

Undera by 10+ goals in the 2's. Best side in the comp all year and should run away with the game from the start.

Nagambie by 5 goals in the 3's. Rushworth have had a very good run over the past 3 weeks but I think it will stop on the weekend.

Good luck to all sides playing this weekend sould, be a good weekend.

As a player I absolutely 100% support having an odd number teams so that we can get a bye!
During the season even if your team doesn't have injuries you really look forward to and enjoy a week off your own football to relax and either get away for the weekend or go watch some other footy without having to play.
And if your team does have injuries it gives them an extra week to back. The last two years, just having the one week off wasn't enough, especially this year as it was early in the year and then we had a solid 12 weeks of footy with no break and for a team like undera this would be there 16th week in a row.... long time with out a break.

Totally agree with your comments Bodz...Spot On. Bloody long year with out byes and as we are not the AFL, we do not enjoy the luxuries of player rotations!! (Well not as many anyway;))
I know some of our Murray League cousins enjoyed 2-4 byes this year! As long as they are spread out, its a good thing!:thumbsu:
I'm sure your body, as well as mine, are enjoying well earned rests!! Although I'd give anything to be running round Mooroopna this weekend!!

Good luck all teams on the day, for me, Nagaz will cruise...43 pts.

Agree, byes would be looked at by most players as a postive not a negative.

Agree. Yeah 2 byes would be real good for us players during the season, but i know when wallan went back to the rdfl some people were more thinking along the lines of losing 2 games and hosting 1 less home game and therefore losing that revenue etc.

So when does the league know 100% for sure about Longwood?

Do you think Nagambie & Avenel turned it down, as things would be much better for them without Longwood?

What a pity that the Mooroopna 4ths, Seymour 4ths, Euroa 4ths and Kyabram 4ths can't see their collective way clear to help the game and a small town. Violet Town would support Longwood because they have been in the same position of have a league fold, good on them for giving Longwood a go. Sad that the top three clubs in the KDFL have seemingly decided to look after themselves. Perhaps just a reality check for any oversized egos that may exist, with the BDFL now defunct how far above the bottom of the barrel does that leave this league?

My Tips
SENIORS
Nagambie Vs Undera 25 points- Have been the best team in the comp all year. Undera are lucky to be there with the last 2 games being come from behind victories. They won't be able to this to the well coached and better team in Nagambie. Will be a great shoot out at either end. Someone will have to shut down Laporta.
BOG Linc Sullivan (Nag)

TWOs
Undera Vs Tallygaroopna 7 points- In good form over the past few weeks and will steal this one from the favourite Undera. Will start the losing trend for the Undera boys.
BOG Mathew Newton-King (Tal)

THIRDs

Nagambie Vs Rushworth 35 Points- Last years rematch but sadly for Rushworth, Nagambie will go back to back. Nagambie will be too quick and fit for the bigger bodies of Rushy. Will be an even game up to half time but Nagambie will then run away with the win. Rushworth's determination may keep them in the game for longer.
BOG Matthew Wallis (Nag)

Seniors
Nagambie vs. Undera
Nagambie to win by hopefully less than 4 goals, it's just hard to fault the undefeated Lakers. For them to lose it would be a massive boilover, however, I'm really hoping we'll get to see the first close Grand Final in a couple of years.
B.O.G. Brent Le Cerf

Reserves
Undera vs. Tallygaroopna
Pretty hard to go past Undera, Tallygaroopna have dropped a game or two they shouldn't have during the year, so the margin I'm tipping will be over 5 goals...

Under 18's
Nagambie vs. Rushworth
Nagambie, like their Senior counterparts should account for the Rushworth boys, as they have been a class above the rest this year. Nagambie by 40+ points.

Girgarre look to be heading in the right direction with the signings of T.Snelson ( Shep Swans/ Nathalia) and A.Brunt ( Tongala ) for next year along with R.Jones ( QLD/Ky ). Also have a big full forward ready to sign in coming weeks hopefully.

Talking to Scotty at Stanhope /Undera game and it sounds like you no more than him or he was just not letting on to me being his old club i guess??, hope what your saying is fact, bit early to be starting things like this when our season has not even finished.

Nagambie by 32 pts kicking away late in the game.
Tally by 16pts, they are not the same side as through the year
Rushy by 5 in a upset, should have beatin them in there only encouter during the year.

Sounds like Gig going to be 2010 early flag favourites again.
With snelson I was lead to beleive when he went back to Nathalia this year they agreed for a mid year deal on the terms he plays next year.

What are you on about here? Mooroopna, Seymour, Euroa etc don't have
4ths. They have sides in junior comps which run separately to the GVFL.

I hope Longwood get the OK, but they have no hope in hell of getting a thirds side up and running.
